Description

Beginners: : The Big Bang – Zero to hero in 8 weeks

Do I have to be able to play anything at all to join the Beginners Academy?

No – we like it when you come to us as inexperienced and clueless as the day you were born. The only requirement we ask is that you consider yourself a beginner when it comes to guitar. And preferably that you like at least some of the music that’s ever been written.

How do I know if I am a beginner?

If you’ve never held a guitar in your own two hands, then you’re a beginner. If you’ve held a guitar and perhaps tried to play one or two chords, then you’re also a beginner. If you played one or two songs on guitar, but that was eighty years ago, and you can no longer remember which way up the instrument goes, then you can also join the Beginners Academy. However, if you have forgotten three of the notes in ‘Stairway to Heaven’ but can otherwise play it flawlessly, then go on get out – go back to the non-beginners area of The Guitar Social’s virtual world and book yourself onto a different course.

What actually is the Beginners Academy?

The Guitar Social’s Beginners Academy is only the best guitar course in East and central London. We’ve taught thousands of beginners across the city and taken them from quivering wrecks to knowledgeable and confident players and performers in the space of eight weeks. The core component of our Academy is that it is a group course. That means you get to learn alongside other beginners, make friends, compare your newly developing callouses, and maybe even run off through Soho square together at the end of the course and form a band.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I miss a session?

That's very normal. We make videos to help you to catch up and if there is space on another session that week of the same level then you're welcome to join it, but please get in touch first to check there is room

  • How do I access the workshop materials?

Once you’re a member you’ll be added to Student’s corner, where we store all the session materials including song sheets, worksheets and practice videos. After the session, normally the following day you’ll be sent an email with some follow up materials and a suggested practice guide. See ‘After the session, what to expect’ for more details.

  • I’m unsure which course is right for me. Can you help?

Of course. Feel free to get in touch with us via email or phone and we can talk you through your current level and what you’re wanting to get out of a course. With your membership you can also come to more than one course so feel free to try out a couple of different levels

  • I need to take a break from membership/ it’s not for me, can you cancel it or pause it?

Membership can’t be paused and if you want to cancel this is something you’ll need to do yourself through Cademy

  • How many people normally take part in a session?

We tend to have between 7 and 12 musicians. Beginners we cap at 10 so that you get the time and attention that a beginner needs.

  • Do I need my own guitar

Yes please. We have one or two spare to rent out for £4 per session but we can’t guarantee that someone else won’t have nabbed it

ALso bring a capo and something to view your resources on as we have gone paperless so won't be printing anything

  • How do I know what to practice?

When we send the follow up material, we will detail out what was covered in the last session and what will be covered in the next one, so that you know what to focus on.

You’ll receive short videos detailing specific aspects to practice and any related written materials e.g. tabs, chords or scales.

  • Which guitar should I bring?

Which guitar do you most enjoy playing or most want to learn on? There's your answer. Classical, acoustic, electric, resonator...all are good.

If bringing an electric or bass please bring an amp
