‘Myofascial pain: Beyond taking the edge off’ by Dr Seamus Coyle, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool

Most of us have sat with a patient whose pain we couldn't adequately control. We escalated opioids, rotated to a different one, and told ourselves we've done what we could. This talk argues that in many of those cases, myofascial pain was present, undertreated, and eminently addressable. Drawing on my clinical experience, it covers how to recognise myofascial pain in complex palliative presentations, the patterns that should make you stop and think, and the practical approaches that go beyond taking the edge off.

Seamus is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool. His main research area is the Biology of dying and the development of a urine test to predict dying (patented). He is also interested in non-pharmacological ways of controlling pain and other symptoms.
