A new addition to the Ravn Clay workshop menu – the Stoneware Butter Dish
Spend a little longer at the bench and create something both practical and quietly beautiful for everyday use.
This extended session (up to 3 hours) is designed for those who’d like to take on a slightly more involved build. You’ll create your own stoneware butter dish, with all the main components prepared in advance — allowing you to focus on shaping, refining and bringing the piece together.
There’s still plenty of room for creativity. Once assembled, you’ll add your own decoration and finish before selecting a glaze of your choice, making each dish entirely your own.
As always, we’ll guide you through each stage, with time and support to help you get the most from your time in the pottery.
Your finished piece will remain at the studio to be glazed and fired, ready for collection (or posting) once complete.
Sessions run for up to 3 hours
£45 per person, including materials, tuition, glazing and firing
Limited to 6 people per session for a more focused, supported experience
You’ll be able to choose from a range of studio dipping glazes to finish your butter dish. The final look is entirely up to you—simple and understated, or something with a bit more character.
Pottery has its risks—kilns can be unpredictable, and occasionally pieces crack or fail despite our best efforts. It’s all part of the process.
Also: it can be strangely addictive.
The Ford Studio is on the ground floor of the old Reading Rooms, just up the road from Lady Waterford Hall.
There’s plenty to explore nearby if you fancy making a day of it—walks, cafés, a narrow-gauge railway, Etal Castle, a working mill, and more.
