It's a classical calligraphy style developed in France during the 17th century. It was used widely before modern cursive became common.
French Round Hand is characterized by rounded, balanced, and highly legible letterforms. Unlike more slanted scripts such as copperplate, it is typically written upright or with only a slight rightward slant. The style emphasizes clarity and uniformity, making it suitable for official records and printed copybooks used in schools.
The course comprises four two-hour sessions on the followind dates, from 6 pm to 8 pm:
Session 1: Tuesday 5th May 2026
Session 2: Tuesday 12th May 2026
Session 3: Tuesday 19th May 2026
Session 4: Tuesday 26th May 2026
The course usually progresses from basic pen control to complete written compositions. Students will practice essential strokes before constructing each letter with attention to key visual characteristics: upright letters, rounded shapes, and balanced spacing.
Ideal for beginners and intermediate calligraphers, the session builds muscle memory through structured exercises and guided feedback.
The course builds both technical handwriting skills and artistic awareness, making French Round Hand a strong foundation for studying other historical calligraphy styles.
