Description

About this Training Course

Comprising 5 full-day sessions, this course is specifically designed for geoscientists working on play-based exploration and prospect generation / maturation projects as well as near-field exploration / appraisal. Throughout the exploration/appraisal phases of the EP life cycle, a sound geological knowledge of basin type, sediment-fill, and deformation phases, should underpin project decision making.

This Seismic Stratigraphy and Depositional Systems: Predicting Reservoir Distribution, Geometry & Quality course, focuses on recognition of reservoir type and distribution aspects as well as improving delegates predictive capabilities in terms of reservoir geometry and quality. The course leans heavily on seismic stratigraphic interpretation, well log facies analysis, correlation and analogue outcrop / core evaluation.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

Through short, focused presentations and a series of industry case history-based examples and exercises, participants will learn to optimise conceptual reservoir geological interpretations for use in Play-based, Prospect and Appraisal evaluations.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is geared towards geoscientists with a couple of years of work experience, working in the exploration / appraisal phases of the EP project life cycle.

  • The course is designed to teach about depositional systems and reservoir distribution in the context of Play-based Exploration, Prospect Maturation and Appraisal scales of reservoir evaluation.

  • Course subjects include basic seismic / sequence stratigraphy evaluation and will discuss stratigraphic geometries in terms of accommodation space changes and systems tracts.

  • The interplay of stratigraphic geometries and structural deformation is a key theme.

  • A key focus of the course is on patterns of reservoir distribution and controls in different depositional settings such as deltaic, alluvial, deep water and carbonates.

  • A session on porosity / permeability distribution forms a key element.

  • Industry case histories in the form of examples and exercises are an integral part of the course.

TRAINING METHODS

The course makes use of data such as seismic, log, core, outcrop, and satellite images.

Method of teaching consists of a mix of lectures and hands-on exercises, while stimulating individual, team, and plenary discussion.

Participants will be exposed to short lectures throughout the 5 days, followed by hands-on individual and team exercises and discussions in a variety of geological settings. “Let the data tell their story”, is a key recurring theme in this course.

TRAINER

During his 38 years Shell career, Your Expert Course Instructor spent a significant part of his career training Shell and seconded Operating Unit staff. He led exploration-focused geological fieldtrips in the Pyrenees (NE Spain), Tabernas and Sorbas Basins (SE Spain) and NW Borneo ( NW Sarawak, Labuan, and Sabah KK) and taught classroom courses on seismic stratigraphy and reservoir characterisation. During his time in the Shell Training Centre, he developed and ran training events a/o for exploration team leaders, a field- and classroom-based opportunity evaluation course, a hydrocarbon maturation course for young professionals and a field-based basinfill-scale geology course for new hires. He lectured at the Singapore AAPG ICE (2012) on seismic stratigraphy, presented at the AAPG ICE (Salt Lake City 2005) on a comparison of reservoir quality of China’s Ordos and Tarim Basins, and co-authored a publication (Lovelock et al 1981) on the Ordovician of the Oman Mountains.
