Intermediate level
This 5 full-day training course provides an understanding of the evolving role of seismic petrophysics through the use of amplitude variations with offset or angle (AVO/AVA), attributes, and inversion techniques. Understanding rock physics and the behaviour of the propagating seismic waves represents an integral part of the course, especially in the context of specific applications including enhanced seismic interpretation, rock and fluid characterization, including hydrocarbon identification and quantification, fracture identification, and stress/geomechanical analysis.
Course concepts are enhanced by numerous practical exercises and case studies.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES
By attending this course, the participants will learn the following:
The fundamentals of seismic wave propagation and specific attributes of seismic measurements toward enhanced interpretation and petrophysics;
The benefits and cons of various attributes in various facets of investigation, including stratigraphy/sedimentology, structural geology and geomechanics, and seismic petrophysics;
How to determine elastic properties from AVO/AVA analysis for fluid and lithologic discrimination and geomechanical/stress analysis;
The techniques of seismic inversion, including well log integration, and property extraction in the prestack and poststack domains; and
The role of seismic attribute analysis and related techniques in understanding risk elements from exploration, drilling and completion, and development stages.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists, reservoir engineers, and exploration/production managers.
TRAINER
Your expert course leader received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geology from the now University of Louisiana-Lafayette in 1989 and 1990 respectively, and his Ph.D. as a National Science Foundation fellow at Baylor University, Waco, Texas, in 1993.
From 1994 – 1996, he studied planetary tectonics as a NASA-funded postdoctoral fellow at Southern Methodist University. In 1996, he returned to UL-Lafayette, where he was awarded in 1997 the Hensarling-Chapman Endowed Professorship in Geology. He began independent consulting activities in 1991, and in 2001, he left academia for full-time consulting for clients ranging from one-man shops to supermajors. He rejoined UL-Lafayette as an adjunct professor from 2011 – 2018.
He is an active researcher, receiving several million dollars in grants from federal, state, and industry sources, presenting numerous talks, including a 2019 AAPG Levorsen award, and publishing on a diversity of geoscience topics, including a Grover E. Murray Best Published Paper award in 2017. He is co-author of the inaugural GCAGS/GCSSEPM Transactions Best Student Paper award in 2018. He served as the GCAGS Publisher since 2006 and in various GCAGS/GCSSEPM Transactions editing capacities since 2006, including the 2014 and 2017 – 2022 Editor (named Permanent Transactions Editor in 2017), and Managing Editor since 2011, receiving a GCAGS Distinguished Service Award in 2018.
He served as the General Chair for GeoGulf 2020 (70th GCAGS/GCSSEPM Convention), the 1st hybrid geoscience conference in the world. He is a Past President of the Lafayette Geological Society and served as its Editor and Publisher from 2002 – 2018. In 2018, he founded the Willis School of Applied Geoscience, reformulating decades of industry-training experience to provide alternative opportunities for graduate-level education. In 2020, he received an Honorary Membership from GCSSEPM. He also joined the LSU faculty as an adjunct professor in 2020. In 2021, he co-founded the Society of Applied Geoscientists and Engineers, serving as its President, General Chair for the SAGE 2022 Convention & Exposition, and Vice-Chair for the Benghazi International Geoscience & Engineering Conference 2022 (BIGEC 2022).
POST TRAINING COACHING SUPPORT (OPTIONAL)
To further optimise your learning experience from our courses, we also offer individualized “One to One” coaching support for 2 hours post training. We can help improve your competence in your chosen area of interest, based on your learning needs and available hours. This is a great opportunity to improve your capability and confidence in a particular area of expertise. It will be delivered over a secure video conference call by one of our senior trainers. They will work with you to create a tailor-made coaching program that will help you achieve your goals faster.
