We run the orchard partly as a volunteer project, and partly as a service activity for a variety of specific groups, including woodland play activities for chidren, Forest School for All Ages with adults, particularly those with mental health, wellbeing, or recovery interests. Some of those activities provide bits of income. Sessions are either by arrangement or open to all. There are set work sessions open to all on the first and third Sunday of each month, and a combination of drop-in and bespoke woodland play sessions most Wednesdays.

Pioneers Leading the Way were established in 1999 as a voluntary organisation and in 2004 became a Registered Charity and Company Limited by Guarantee. Pioneers Leading the Way has an overriding objective to facilitate the recruitment, training and development of volunteer mentors, from various racial, ethnic and religious communities in Birmingham, with an aim to support all students in need. We have a group of experienced trustees who all hold relevant experience in the work that the organisation carries out. Pioneers Leading the Way are also in receipt of the National Standard for Mentoring from the National Mentoring and Befriending Foundation. Pioneers Leading the Way are members of the Birmingham Mentoring Consortium which was established in December 1996 by a consortium of six mentoring organisations which collectively represented a wide cohort of communities from Birmingham.
