Steve is a multi-award winning outdoor learning professional whose work is well-respected in Bristol and Nationally. Steve England Dogs In 2013, Steve was inducted into the Bristol Walk of Fame at Bristol Zoo in recognition of his work as a local conservation educator. In the same year, Steve was runner up in the UK’s ‘Council for Learning outside the Classroom’s’ “Lifetime Contribution to LOtC” award. He was recently awarded the Avon & Somerset Police Commissioner’s ‘Pride Award’ for his work supporting young people with a wide range of previous skills and experience, and engaging young people in positive outdoor learning activities at Stoke Park Estate. Throughout 2015, Steve has been working with Avon Wildlife Trust on the ‘My Wild City Project’ which aims to turn the whole of Bristol into a nature reserve. Steve is one of the project’s ‘My Wild City Champions.’ Steve has spent his life working in Stoke Park Estate and the nearby Frome Valley, witnessing and contributing to many changes aimed at improving Bristol’s wildlife. Steve continues to volunteer at Stoke Park Estate, supporting Stoke Park Action Group and other community-based organisations to maintain and develop the park for the benefit of the wider community. This work was recently recognised by Bristol Natural History Consortium which awarded Steve ‘Bristol’s Green Volunteer of the Year,’ in recognition of his ongoing commitment to improving the natural environment.

We are an independent motorcycle training organisation affiliated to IAM RoadSmart. We are also an active, friendly and welcoming riders’ club. ABOUT BRISTOL ADVANCED MOTORCYCLISTS Official provider of IAM RoadSmart training in Bristol. Although we are affiliated to the IAM RoadSmart organisation, and an official provider of the RoadSmart programme, Bristol Advanced Motorcyclists is a separate organisation, with charitable status. And whilst one of our primary purposes as an organisation is to provide a coordinated training programme to motorcyclists in Bristol and the west country region, the club is also an active social hub for riders. Participation in the club’s activities isn’t mandatory, but it’s a great way to meet other like-minded riders and to continue developing your skills. Once you’ve gained sufficient experience you may even wish to progress to becoming an IAM RoadSmart Observer yourself, and of course we can guide you towards that achievement too. In addition to the monthly Super Sunday events we also arrange group ride-outs, more extended trips both in the UK and Europe, talks and other social activities. You can learn more about Freewheelers here: www.freewheelers.org.uk About the IAM The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is a national charity organisation, established in 1956, dedicated to increasing road safety by improving driving standards. Both the organisation and the training programme is now known as IAM RoadSmart. RoadSmart is a national training programme for drivers and riders aimed at developing their observation and control skills. The RoadSmart training programme is delivered at regional level by volunteer groups, such as Bristol Advanced Motorcyclists (BAM), who are a designated ‘Official Provider’. All Observers are accredited by IAM RoadSmart. When you begin your training you become an Associate member. Full membership of the IAM is awarded upon successfully achieving the Advanced standard. Once this standard is achieved there are no further testing stages (unless you opt to train to be an Observer) and you become a full, lifetime member of the IAM, subject to an annual renewal fee (currently £42 per year).

The SLT is assisted by a team of dedicated professionals with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Suzanne Jacob OBE, CEO Having worked at SafeLives for three years – including two years as Deputy CEO – Suzanne became Chief Executive in December 2017. Immediately before joining SafeLives, Suzanne spent several months working in Delhi for Breakthrough India, an organisation which campaigns against violence and discrimination against women and girls. Prior to this, Suzanne spent nearly a decade with the UK Home Office. Here, she worked extensively on national security matters, established the National Crime Agency as a significant new part of UK law enforcement, and acted as Private Secretary to the Minister responsible for crime and policing. Suzanne worked for several years on security for the London 2012 Olympics, and was awarded an OBE in 2013 for her work on intelligence collection and analysis, and enforcement activity. Suzanne volunteered for seven years on the Victim Support helpline, providing first response for victims of all crime types. She became a Trustee of Crimestoppers UK in April 2021. Jo Silver, Director of Quality and Innovation Jo is responsible for designing and piloting exciting new and effective interventions to end domestic abuse. Jo provides expert advice on activities, policy messages and practice, she works with national and local commissioners, funders, policy makers and partners to make this happen. Jo rejoined us in January 2014, having spent two years as senior consultant at the NSPCC in Cardiff. Jo was Caada's (SafeLives' former name) director of professional development between 2006 and 2012. She also worked for the police for ten years in the public protection unit and at the Women's Safety Unit in Cardiff. Jo Gordon, Chief Operating Officer Jo is responsible for effective and efficient internal management of the organisation, making sure that SafeLives lives by its values of being human, rigorous and brave. Jo took up the role of Chief Operating Officer in July 2018. Prior to this, Jo was Head of Learning and Accreditation at SafeLives having joined in 2005 as a freelance trainer. Jo started her career as a youth and community worker. She worked for ten years at North Devon Women’s Aid prior to SafeLives and is committed to tackling the issue of domestic abuse. Jo is also a volunteer at her local homeless shelter. Liz Thompson, Director of External Relations Liz is responsible for our external relations activity, working with colleagues to forge and maintain great relationships with the wide array of people who are vital to our work; find new opportunities to develop and replicate what we do; and secure the support and income we need to help people and their families live safely and well. She joined in 2019, following a decade leading communications for the Royal Shakespeare Company. She started her career in the commercial sector at public relations agency, Burson-Marsteller, and her previous experience includes external relations, fundraising and management roles in the public sector, at the Environment Agency and Countryside Commission, and at the charity Turning Point. She also trained as a volunteer substance misuse counsellor at Addaction, and worked at their first needle exchange in Bethnal Green.

Naftali brings more than 26 years’ experience in project and organisational management in the UK and overseas. He has a BSc Honours degree and is a former teacher and qualified trainer. He has served as a Director at Tolerance International UK, ACORD UK, Motivation Charitable Trust UK; Programme Manager at Netherlands Foreign Service and ETC East Africa Consultants BV; etc. He has extensive experience with youth, intergenerational and inter-cultural work and training both in the UK and in Eastern Africa. James Musau Nzala James Nzala is the Let Us Connect Programme Co-ordinator in Kenya. He has a BSc IT degree and is qualified in advanced web design (PHP, MySQL database, CSS & JavaScript coding), software and hardware trouble shooting and repair, IT-user training, and network building and management. Ben Ferguson Ben was one of the first to pioneer gap year experiences in Kenya with Mend the Gap. Since then he has become a long term volunteer and brings a wealth of business and hospitality experience to the organisation. He looks after our communications and relationships with our business partners. Nicholus Ole Murero Nick is Rifts Valley Co-ordinator for Mend the Gap in Kenya. West of England Falconry (WoEF) was established in 2009 inspired by Director Jay Marshall’s lifelong interest in ornithology. WoEF is a registered charity dedicated to the well-being, education and conservation of birds of prey. “It was an experience similar to the ones we now offer the public which prompted me to learn more about falconry. After working with experienced falconers I started to develop a private collection and aviaries of my own. West of England Falconry started in 2009 and has subsequently been granted charitable status in 2013” says Jay. Experiences have always been well reviewed and continued to grow in popularity. WoEF received their first TripAdvisor certificate of excellence in 2015 and have done every year since and is now in the 'Hall of Fame'. In 2015 Naomi Johns met Jay and started working with him as a volunteer. Today Naomi now runs the centre alongside a brilliant team of staff and volunteers. WoEF’s work aims to benefit both wild and captive birds of prey through training and (very importantly) rescue and rehabilitation. Education, information and promoting and sustaining the art of falconry are also a high priority. Due to redevelopment proposals forcing relocation at short notice in early 2017, WoEF moved to Newton St Loe, where the local Duchy of Cornwall office supported us by providing larger premises. WoEF took full advantage of this opportunity and opened The Owlery in October 2017 with 15 more resident birds. WoEF received a Gold award for the Learning Experience of the year in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards in November 2017, and then went on to accept the Silver award for the whole of the South West. In April 2019, DEFRA granted WoEF a Zoo License, becoming Baths first Zoo, commending a high standard of animal care and commitment to charitable conservation and education activities. In November of 2019 West of England Falconry received a further four Bristol, Bath and Somerset tourism awards for the Small Visitor Attraction of the year, International Tourism, the Learning Experience of the year and for Accessibility and Inclusivity. BFS has a number of STAFF and VOLUNTEERS who assist in running our forest school sessions, planning activities and preparing resources. All BFS staff who lead sessions alone are fully Forest School qualified, DBS checked, First Aid trained and they hold Public Liability Insurance. They include… ANDY WILSON founded Bristol Forest School in 2004. He trained with the original Forest School cohort from Bridgwater College, and has a wealth of experience from 18 years forest school teaching. Andy runs regular Forest School sessions and parties at both the BFS woodland and in schools throughout Bristol. He also runs Forest School staff training. As Woodland Manager, Andy has successfully transformed the BFS site into a beautiful and accessible educational space; he monitors our ecological footprint through an environmentally sustainable attitude to Our Woodland. SOPHIE BUTLER joined Andy in 2011 and together they expanded Bristol Forest School. She is a trained Early Years teacher and qualified as a Level Three Forest School Leader in 2012. Sophie’s passion for nature and sustainability has grown over the years since living off-grid in an eco village in Hawaii. Sophie established the BFS Pre-Schools, the Saturday Club Minis and Adventurers. She now supports the running of these groups and is responsible for BFS’s policies, website and social media. HANNAH BUSHELL joined the BFS staff team in 2015 following a dedicated volunteering stint and completing her Level Three Forest School. Hannah is an experienced primary school teacher who works part-time in a Steiner Kindergarten as well as undertaking the nature connection course ‘Call of the Wild’. LOUISE SPELLWARD is a qualified Horticulturalist and garden designer with a background in Environmental Conservation. Her first experience of Bristol Forest School was as a parent attending with her son; not wanting to miss out on the fun, she decided to train in Forest School herself and completed her Level 3. BESS SPENCER worked as an ‘Access to Nature’ play-worker in inner city London and trained as a Forest School leader in 2018. She now practices and teaches co-counselling and nature-facilitation activities using Tom Brown’s Apache derived techniques. At Bristol Forest School, Bess assists with our school sessions. MELISSA GAULT is a qualified Level 3 Forest School Leader and is currently studying to become an Early Years educator. She loves getting out into nature as much as possible! Melissa has been supporting Bristol Forest School since January 2018. She began as a volunteer for the Saturday Minis and is now a fully fledged member of the Pre-School team. MILLY BAILEY has an environmental background – she moved from working in an office as an environmental consultant, to the forest – which she much prefers. Milly has a passion for connecting herself and others to the natural world: she is a keen hiker, forager and wild swimmer.
