You don’t need any previous experience with leather working as you will learn the core skills and techniques on the course. It’s a perfect introduction to making traditional leather items. So if you’re looking for an unforgettable day, join our experienced craftsman, Paul Bradley, in a leather working day that focuses on leather work tools, design and construction. We have designed this course around the making of a simple notebook holder. We have chosen this as a project as it covers all the basic skills required to produce almost any small leather goods. There is also large scope for customisation of your project. Along the way you will learn about different leathers, techniques and tools. Typically, you will, under the expert guidance and instruction of Paul Bradley: - Use the provided pattern to produce a leather cover for a standard 5.5 x 3.5 notebook - Be guided on how to design and draw out and customise a pattern - Learn all about the different tools used in leather working and how to use them - Learn how to cut out, assemble and mark for stitching - Learn and practice the techniques of the traditional saddle stitch to complete the assembly of your notebook - Learn how to finish your project with edge burnishing techniques and other small but important details that add to the overall professional look. My Work Research Researching the stories we tell ourselves and other people; both historically and the present day – I delve into stories in academic research, the media, memoir, diaries, fiction, art as well as myths and fairy tales to understand the dominant narrative. Write Writing my own stories. I don’t ask other people to do anything I haven’t done myself, so my research includes autoethnographic or creative work of my own. Writing myself into my work is integral to understanding and shifting the narrative. I also work in creative collaboration with others. Facilitate Helping others tell their stories. My aim is to encourage diversity, complexity and specificity. There are no quick fixes, tidy endings, or moments of complete resolution in life and the stories we write and create will ideally represent this. Stories don’t need to be straightforward narratives, so I offer tips and techniques and make space for blends of different types of writing (eg poetry, lyric essays, journals or reflective writing) or other understandings of stories such as craft or visual representations. Curate Sharing stories. I aim to do all that I can to help little-heard stories shake the hearts and change the minds of policy makers and other people who keep the dominant narrative going. I do this by commissioning, editing and publishing stories of community and co-production on Ideas Hub; organising events; speaking at conferences; creating online archives; and writing and publishing articles about my work.

My Story typed words on a vintage typewr I have always loved reading and writing and if you had met me as a child, I would have been scribbling in a notebook, typing stories on my typewriter or creating mini-books. As a doctor, who specialised in the care of working age adults with complex disabilities (Rehabilitation Medicine), I am no stranger to illness, loss and grief, both as a witness to the experiences of others, but from my own personal experiences too. Six weeks before my Medical School final exams, my younger brother died as a result of advanced colon cancer he had been bravely dealing with since the age of 19. It was a truly bewildering time for us as a family, but many important decisions needed to be made, like, "do I or don't I sit Finals exams?" after five enjoyable but arduous years at medical school. Three months later, I entered into the whirlwind of life as a trainee doctor, which gave me little time to think and process my brother’s death. It was a year or so later, when Grief took charge, and like a well-meaning but firm,wise advisor, signalled to me that I really did have to stop, and process things.
