The Generic Instructor Course (GIC) trains potential instructors in the principles of adult learning. It provides the skills necessary to train other Healthcare Professionals in a range of course including ALS, EPALS, APLS and MIMMS. This course is a collaboration between the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG).
At ECS this course is routinely open to those candidates who have been identified as having Instructor Potential (IP) by the RC(UK) or ALSG following successful completion on provider courses.
Specifically;
Advanced Life Support (ALS)
Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)
European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS).
Subject to faculty availability the course may also be open to MIMMS and European Trauma Course (ETC) candidates.
Course regulations state that candidates should have a minimum of 6 weeks to prepare for the course - it is not advised to book the course with less notice than this.
The GIC course is only open to those candidates who have been identified as having Instructor Potential (IP) by the RC(UK) or ALSG following successful completion on provider courses.
You must complete the GIC within 4 years of the provider course on which you achieved Instructor Potential status (IP).
The GIC course compromises a day of e-learning and two days of face-to-face training. The e-learning must be completed prior to attending the face-to-face training, as well as preparing specific teaching assignments.
All information on how to access the e-learning will be included in the pre-course joining instructions.
The two days of the face-to-face training will be led by a GIC Educator who, along with experienced faculty will provide demonstrations and explore the theory of different teaching modalities.
You will receive a full pre-course information email, along with a copy of the Pocket Guide to Teaching for Clinical Instructors (4th edition). Including completion of the e-module. You will also be expected to prepare specific teaching assignments for the face-to-face training.
You will receive access to pre-course essentials 6 weeks ahead of the course date.

Following successful completion of this course, candidates must teach on two provider courses as an Instructor Candidate (IC) prior to completion of their qualification. This must be done within two years of completion of the GIC course.
