Shiv Textiles is an independent, Brighton-based studio closing the loop on the fast-fashion industry. We rescue deadstock yarn destined for landfill and handcraft it into fine homewares, lifestyle accessories and sustainable weaving kits for you to give a new life at home. Meet the maker: Siobhan Martin Let me spin you a yarn… My studio is about weaving sustainability into the textiles industry. By putting a modern spin on a traditional craft, I want to show that it’s possible for us to enjoy quality products – pieces you really cherish – while minimising the impact we have on the planet too. Shiv Textiles was born in my bedroom in 2017. As an intern for big-name brands in the textiles and fashion industry, I’d been shocked by the amount of perfectly good materials going to waste. And I knew there had to be a better way. Fast fashion needs to take its foot off the pedal. So I began contacting mills and factories, buying their yarns, zips, threads, buttons – all destined for landfill – by the kilogram. And it’s from this that all those cushions, scarves and weaving kits are created. This process never gets beige-and-boring. You have to think on your feet. Design with what you have. Every box of upcycled materials that lands in my studio feels like a small victory. Buying with thought and care has never felt so important, and as I hope you’ll join me in honouring the lifecycle of our precious materials. And enjoy my textiles too.

I am a practising and exhibiting textile artist who makes work focussing on memory, identity, loss and absence, using a variety of mixed media techniques alongside adapting traditional patchwork and embroidery processes for contemporary work. I have also been teaching textiles for many years, and enjoy developing the design aspect of projects with students, as well as teaching the more practical stitching and colouring skills. I have delivered City & Guilds to Diploma (the old Part 2) level in both Embroidery and Patchwork & Quilting. 2015 saw me complete my Masters with Distinction as well as having a gallery at Festival of Quilts. Then in 2016 I was part of the very successful unFOLD exhibition at the Knitting & Stitching Shows at Alexandra Palace and Harrogate International Centre. We repeated that experience with The Button Box exhibition at Festival of Quilts 2018. In 2019 I successfully entered work into the Vlieseline Fine Arts Textile Award at FOQ and then worked with unFOLD members to produce a group piece which was accepted into the Janome Fine Art Textiles Award in 2021. The Covid pandemic and lockdown saw me presenting one of the Community Stitch challenges for TextileArtist.org online, to 18,000 members of the community. This was a very exciting opportunity which coincided with the development of my new online courses. With a few external teaching commitments left for 2022, I have decided to concentrate on courses in Eastbourne for 2023 to enable me to get more stitching done. 2024 WORKSHOP PROGRAMME UPCOMING WORKSHOPS & ACTIVITIES Each year we run a series of workshops that are open to members of the group. Most of these require booking in advance and have extra costs associated to cover things such as tutors and materials. Participation in workshops is optional. If you’re interested in taking part in any of these please speak to Jenny R at the next meeting. FEBRUARY 2024 – AGM No booking required. Usual AGM things – review of group finances, voting in officers, etc. Also, of course, crafting and nattering!  MARCH 2024 – CROCHET HEXAGON CARDIGAN We will be learning how to make a Hexagon cardigan in crochet.   Booking required. My work is driven by the urge to experiment and sample yarns. I respond to the environments I find myself in, urban or rural. Trees are a constant inspiration, as are buildings. I have recently been making work concerned with vision and the loss of sight. I favour plant fibres: cotton, hemp, linen, jute and bamboo but also include wool and silk. I have been weaving on small frames since I was a child. Following an art and design Foundation Course, I gained a BA (Hons) in African and Asian Art and Archaeology at SOAS, London University. I have worked as an arts administrator and assistant for artists and arts organisations, gaining a certificate in Arts Management and Levels 1 & 2 OCA Textiles. Having specialised in Tapestry Weaving, I completed the post-graduate diploma at West Dean College in 1997. I exhibit in the UK and internationally. Conversely, I am also working on and researching a medieval-inspired community embroidered tapestry to commemorate the Battle of Lewes (1264). I teach tapestry weaving and crewel embroidery techniques.

Based in East Sussex, I handcraft traditional and contemporary basketry using willow, rush and other natural materials. My training was at the City Lit in London (2011-2013), and I have a City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Creative Techniques in Textiles (Basketry). Influenced by the patterns, textures and tones that occur in nature, I enjoy exploring non-functional basketry with natural materials foraged near my home. As well as making baskets, I run basketweaving classes for beginners and improvers. I love passing on my passion for this ancient craft. My work has been exhibited in London, Surrey and Sussex.

Hi, I’m Rachael Tamanè, a knitwear designer and tutor who has been knitting professionally for 18 years. Upon finishing my degree in Fashion and Textiles, specialising in knit, I went straight into industry, working as a designer in London for several years. I then progressed to teaching at the London College of Fashion (LCF), before moving on to the University of Brighton. I am passionate about teaching and passing on the skills and knowledge I have attained over my years in knitwear. Please don’t hesitate to send me any enquiries you have about products or lessons!

House of Quinn is a design practice creating small-batch collections of quilts, textiles and unique objects for abode and dwelling. Objects with a sense of place and function that are reflective of our daily rituals and which become part of our personal collections. Simple luxuries for everyday. Founded by Julius Arthur in 2016, House of Quinn is a place for exploration in craft, making and design by using traditional techniques and fundamental making practices to cultivate contemporary design narratives onto familiar objects. Julius’s work is grounded in uncomplicated materials and processes and inspired by an abstract view of the places and things around us. Growing up in Cornwall, memories of childhood and a sense of home and belonging intersect in Julius' work. Assembled from cloth, paper and materials at hand, Julius finds joy in the process of creating with stitching, painting and print. Quilts have become a staple motif in Julius' work. A way of combining materials, connecting through stitch and exploring shape, form and line. The connection between canvas and practical objects blurs the boundaries between art and function and the idea that objects used, bare meaning through their connection with the day-to-day.
