Professional knitting on a vintage machine - Private Workshop

In this private workshop, you'll learn the basics of knitting using a vintage knitting machine to create wearable textiles.  🧶What is machine knitting & who invented it?  The knitting machine was invented by Englishman William Lee in 1589 to make stockings. it's a very small manual machine that enables the maker to create fine, fast knitting. Machine knitting was one of the first major stages in the textile industry that led to the Industrial Revolution. It’s still in use today but unfortunately, it’s become a forgotten craft! So we’re here to bring it back! During this creative and therapeutic class your teacher Valeria will guide you through designing and making your own knitted artwork. You'll learn how to use the vintage knitting ‘machine’ and listen to the wonderful sound it produces as the needles move. The process of machine knitting enables you to have full control over your design. Many people find machine knitting therapeutic and relaxing as you can watch and listen to your artwork come to life. Not only that the results look like those of an expert (even for absolute beginners). 🧶What can you make? It’s smooth, quick performance is perfect for making a range of knits – from home accessories to stylish garments - knit long trendy scarves, and quirky tote bags in under 3 hours… Smaller items only take minutes to do. Valeria will work with you to design and make what you want. All materials and tools are included and your artwork is yours to take home and wear with pride. 🧶Why use a knitting Machine over hand-held? Unlike hand knitting, the beauty of using a domestic knitting machine is that you can knit fast and use much finer yarns to create wearable textiles with a professional artistic finish. There will be far fewer mistakes making it less stressful & it’s super fast.  Your teacher Valeria is an experienced designer/maker with a passion for knitwear. She has worked in a high-end knitwear design studio and as a fashion buyer and now she makes kids and adult knitwear @maluk_knitwear (maluk meaning little one in Ukrainian). She is also a freelance textile designer.   🧶So what are you waiting for - come and enjoy this forgotten craft with us. Please note: This booking is a private 1:1 workshop. My work is driven by the urge to experiment and sample yarns. I respond to the environments I find myself in, urban or rural. Trees are a constant inspiration, as are buildings. I have recently been making work concerned with vision and the loss of sight. I favour plant fibres: cotton, hemp, linen, jute and bamboo but also include wool and silk. I have been weaving on small frames since I was a child. Following an art and design Foundation Course, I gained a BA (Hons) in African and Asian Art and Archaeology at SOAS, London University. I have worked as an arts administrator and assistant for artists and arts organisations, gaining a certificate in Arts Management and Levels 1 & 2 OCA Textiles. Having specialised in Tapestry Weaving, I completed the post-graduate diploma at West Dean College in 1997. I exhibit in the UK and internationally. Conversely, I am also working on and researching a medieval-inspired community embroidered tapestry to commemorate the Battle of Lewes (1264). I teach tapestry weaving and crewel embroidery techniques.

Since the 1920s, Morley Exhibitions has been supporting the creative development of Morley’s students and providing cultural engagement across all centres and subjects. Based across nine display spaces at the Waterloo, Chelsea and North Kensington Centres, Morley Exhibitions maintains a regular programme to showcase the talents of the student and staff community. Morley College London is home to artists working across all art forms and at all stages of their careers: students, emerging and established. Our exhibitions programme presents new ideas and different perspectives in ways that are inclusive, innovative and inspiring. Most prominent of our exhibition spaces is Morley Gallery, a two story state-of-the-art art gallery in a converted pub at the Waterloo Centre. Opened in 1969, it is currently in the last stages of a major refurbishment and will reopen in Spring 2021. We’re excited to announce a new programme of shows in the new year. Morley Exhibitions also maintains our important permanent collection of artworks on display around the college buildings. This including murals by Edward Bawden and large installation paintings by Martin Froy, John Piper and Bridget Riley. Also on show are portraits of Morley’s principals painted by Maggi Hambling, a highly valued member of our teaching staff since the 1970s. I studied Art & Design at Falmouth Art School and then took a degree in Graphic Design & Illustration at Southampton Solent University. I now work as a product developer for a large, international jewellery manufacturer. Most of the work is commercial and not particularly creative. So as a creative outlet I enjoy many craft hobbies such as crochet, knitting and sewing and occasional a bit of illustration. It all started a long time ago… I moved to Germany when I was two and was put into the local kindergarten. I couldn’t speak a word of German, however the teacher, Frau Pfenning began my integration by teaching me to knit – purely by demonstration. When I came back to the UK aged nine, my mother taught me basic crochet and I became adept at making dolls’ clothes using only single crochet – discovering I could shape garments using increases and decreases. She also influenced my knitting style – I am a “pit knitter”, as was her grandmother. As an adult, I didn’t rediscover crochet and knitting until my early thirties – 10 years on and my hobbies have become my passion.
