Course objectives
Operators should first have a basic understanding of the construction industry, including the risks involved and their responsibilities. This foundational knowledge helps them stay aware of potential dangers and, importantly, ensures they follow proper safety protocols.
In addition to this, a solid understanding of the manufacturer's handbook for the machine they are using is essential. Operators must be able to locate and identify the main components of the machine and understand their functions. Furthermore, they should be able to find and explain the key controls necessary for safe operation.
Before starting the machine, operators must, as a key step, perform pre-operational checks in line with the manufacturer's guidelines and legal requirements. Along with this, they must ensure they are wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) required for operating the roller.
Once everything is set, operators should then prepare the roller and operate it safely and efficiently. This not only includes conducting all necessary safety checks in the work area but also being mindful of environmental considerations. Furthermore, understanding the correct procedures for loading and unloading the machine for transport is equally crucial.
Finally, at the end of each shift, operators must follow all shutdown procedures to ensure the machine is safely secured. This step ensures that the equipment remains in good condition for future use and helps prevent accidents or damage.

Operators will practice fitting and adjusting attachments, lifting and transferring loads safely, and loading and unloading external transport. They will also learn proper procedures for machine transportation and end-of-shift shutdown tasks to ensure equipment is ready for the next use.

To operate an excavator well, you first need to understand the risks and responsibilities that come with being a plant operator. This knowledge helps ensure safe and skilled operation. Start by reading the machine’s handbook to fully understand how it works. You should be able to identify and explain the key parts, as well as the steering and driving controls.
Using and maintaining personal protective equipment (PPE) is vital for safety. Always perform the required pre-operational safety checks as instructed by the manufacturer and by law to make sure the machine is working properly.
When getting on and off the machine, do so safely to avoid injury. Start and stop the engine carefully for smooth operation. Prepare the excavator for travel, adjusting for different terrains, including tight spaces. Check the work area for safety before starting.
Move the excavator to the work area and set it up for the task. Perform the digging tasks efficiently, including loading material into vehicles or containers. After finishing, restore the site by leveling the ground. Attach and remove tools as needed for different jobs. Finally, follow all end-of-shift and shutdown steps to secure and maintain the machine for future use.

It’s important to assess the risks associated with tasks and establish a safe system of work. This means preparing a step-by-step method statement that outlines the equipment to be used. During this process, you should clearly assign team roles and responsibilities through toolbox talks or safety briefings.
As you oversee tasks, ensure your team follows the established step-by-step procedures safely. Keep communication open with management and operators throughout the process. Finally, hold a debrief meeting with your team to discuss any lessons learned during the task, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement in safety practices.

A telehandler, short for telescopic handler, is a versatile piece of equipment widely used in construction, agriculture, and industrial settings. Once the machine is in the work area, configure it properly to carry out lifting and load-handling tasks. You will need to safely lift and transfer loads at different locations and securely load and unload external transport vehicles.
Being able to fit, adjust, or remove attachments is also crucial. Additionally, you should demonstrate an understanding of the procedures for safely loading and unloading the machine for transportation. Finally, at the end of your shift, ensure all shutdown procedures are carried out correctly.

As a telehandler operator, understand industry dangers, follow safety protocols, operate machine correctly, perform checks, handle loads efficiently and safely.

Tractors are typically characterised by their large, rugged wheels or tracks, a strong engine, and a robust frame. They can be either wheeled or tracked and come in various sizes and horsepower ratings to suit different tasks and conditions.
Course objectives
To operate an agricultural tractor safely and effectively, you need to understand the basics of the industry and the specific machine you’re using. This includes knowing the potential dangers and the responsibilities of the operator. It’s crucial to read and follow the manufacturer’s handbook, which provides detailed instructions and guidelines.
You should be able to locate and identify the main parts of the tractor and understand how they work, including the key controls. Setting up a safety zone around the tractor is important to create a safe working environment. Always perform pre-operational checks following the manufacturer’s instructions and legal requirements to ensure safety.
Wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential. Make sure you have and maintain the right PPE for the job. Before using the tractor, check that it’s in good working condition. Also, inspect the work area for safety.
You should know how to attach and set up trailers, mounted equipment, and power take-off (PTO) drives, making sure everything is ready for use. Safe and efficient operation requires following safety protocols and considering environmental factors.
Properly storing and transporting implements and attachments helps prevent damage and prolongs their lifespan. Understanding how to load and unload machinery safely is crucial for handling equipment. Lastly, complete all end-of-shift and shutdown procedures to ensure the tractor is safe and ready for the next use.

A rear-tipping dumper (also known as Articulated Dump Truck or ADT) is a construction vehicle used to transport and unload materials like soil, gravel, or debris. The operator drives the dumper to a location, then raises the bed to tip out the load from the rear. If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available for you to add at time of booking. Training kits mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video instructions, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

Clare Wallace joined the Darley Anderson Agency in January 2011 and is building both the Darley Anderson Children’s Agency and the Darley Anderson Illustration Agency lists as well as taking on adult fiction for debut authors.

Aims
To give a clear understanding of Regulations & Legislation that applies to construction work and is an ideal refresher for any operative that has previously completed training in Health & Safety.

Assessment
At the end of this course, all delegates will have a clear understanding of the requirements of Health and Safety Legislation and their responsibilities to comply with them.
Candidates will need to complete a multiple-choice exam at the end of the CITB course. They will also need to engage and interact with others throughout the day.
Certificate
This certification for this course is valid for 5 years and is endorsed by Build UK as a standard training for all operatives. The certificate is part of CSCS Green Card requirements.
To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the course before the expiry date or have completed an NVQ2 or higher in your skills set.

After graduating from St Andrews University with a degree in English Literature and Art History, Maddy followed her love of literature to an internship at non-fiction literary agency Graham Maw Christie. At GMC, Maddy worked her way up to Agent and built a list of authors who wrote for both for adults and children, spanning history, tarot, and nature writing. An avid reader of anything magical, Maddy joined Madeleine Milburn in 2022 to build a list specialising in SFF.

Maddy would like to see SFF across all genres for all ages, including: grim dark, thriller, historical, romance, cosy fantasy, sci-fi, epic, YA fantasy, dark academia, contemporary fantasy, fantasy middle-grade, mythology, fairy tale and queer fantasy. Inspiring children’s non-fiction.

LOOKING FOR: YA/NA FANTASY, SFF, HORROR, ADULT FICTION

John Baker (he/him) joined the Bell Lomax Moreton agency in 2019, cultivating a list shaped around his passion for science fiction, fantasy, and horror, though has lately also branched out into action/adventure fiction. John focuses on authors writing in the Adult, New Adult, and YA spaces. 

John leads the wider agency's film & TV desk, is the Secretary of the Association of Author’s Agents, and the co-chair of the AAA’s Bridge Committee. He also serves on the Kingston University MA Publishing Advisory Board.

Under the umbrella of speculative fiction, John is looking for fantasy, science fiction, horror, romantasy, or literary speculative fiction. He has built a reputation as a champion of underrepresented voices and stories, be it from creators hailing from the global majority and their diasporas or neurodiverse authors, and naturally gravitates towards this kind of storytelling. In short, if he’s never read a story like yours before, he wants to see it. 

Adult fantasy: John loves beefy epic fantasy, especially non-Anglo Christian-inspired. Give him an immersive world, a fresh magical or mythic system, and an exciting cast of characters and he’ll be happy. He is a broad church in the genre so loves a political fantasy, swords and sorcery, courtly intrigue, monster hunting and dastardly villains. John is keen to find an urban fantasy that feels fresh and fun and he’s a sucker for a heroic quest narrative. He’s also very open to fantasy that isn’t easily categorised, but it is playing in that world. John is keenly hunting for more historical fantasy, especially inspired by modern history. He’s had fun with mythological retellings in the past, but as ever, let’s make sure it’s shining the spotlight on new stories. He would also love fantasy that centres on types of relationships less celebrated in fantasy, such as established and secure married couples, or siblings. 

NA/YA fantasy: In this genre, most importantly, John wants to have a good time, whether it’s swoon-worthy kisses in lush ball gowns, or gruesome gore and monsters, so send him pacy, plot-filled adventures. He’d love more books that teenage boys would love: Skullduggery Pleasant forever! 

Romantasy: The thriving new romantasy genre comes with its own set of challenges, so John wants to know what makes your romantasy different; what will set it out from the (very crowded!) market. Give it completely barmy stakes, cool and unique new settings, or a love story that will make your jaw drop. To be clear, he’s happily sorted for a human person meets a fae creature in the spooky woods. Also, cosmic romance is the genre of the future. Give him romantasy in space. Easy. 

Horror: John and horror are old friends. He loves horror inspired by myth and folklore, subversive weird horror that leaves your eyebrows in your hairline, historical horror that pulls from ghastly true stories, and anything that you’ll be reading with the light on. He also loves a gothic element and is particularly looking for horror with a strong romantic throughline, fun YA horror, and female & NB horror authors. 

Science fiction: SF is coming back! And John has been shouting about that. He loves to see an adventurous found-family romp through space or an epic, crunchy space opera. Speculative near-future is fun too, in the vein of Black Mirror’s more uplifting episodes, (e.g. San Junipero). He loves YA science fiction as well; the more creative the better. 

Literary: John is open to finding more rich magical realism or something character-led yet supernatural and would love a high-concept mystery, in the vein of Stuart Turton. He also loves spec fic that uses the speculative lightly as a way of confronting a deeper truth in society today. 

Weird stuff: John wants books that will blow people’s minds and defy categorisation. This is hard to describe, but think Gideon The Ninth, The Library At Mount Char, This Is How You Lose The Time War. John loves a pitch that leaves the editors baffled but intrigued. 

Action/Adventure, Historical Adventure, Espionage: John is branching out into non-speculative adventures, such as John Le Carré, Lee Child, Ian Flemming, and Mick Herron. More as his taste develops, but the hunt is on!

Not looking for: military sci-fi or hard SF, or anything with biblical “character wakes up in purgatory/heaven/hell” narratives. The right comedic fantasy has yet to hit his inbox, but please don’t comp Douglas Adams or Sir Terry.
