Silk Shading has been taken to the next level with this contemporary design. Silk shading is the art of creating shading with threads. This technique is also called needle painting (peinture a l’aiguille)
We will begin by introducing the split stitch on the outlines of the design. In the second stage, you will be learning how to blend colour using short and long stitch.
In the second session, we will practise the stem stitch and satin stitch. A cluster of crystals will be added to create some depth and sparkle.
The completed design reveals a flower with pink petals and carefully applied crystals add to the effect of droplets allowing the design to “shimmer” or “glisten” in the light.
Homework in between both sessions is recommended to allow a smooth transition in the class. Finishing all the steps taught in the first session will be recommended. Stitching all the outlines of the design and finish the silk shading in the flower.

<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Come and spend a relaxed couple of hours learning how to create a Dorset button. &nbsp;These historical and charming buttons originate from the East Dorset area where they were made from 1700 to 1860.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">We will be using plastic or metal rings to create a base and infill with the traditional cartwheel design. &nbsp;We have a wide variety of colours to choose from so you can make a button to suit your mood and style.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">All materials and full instruction from Hannah are included in the workshop together with a cuppa and slice of cake. &nbsp;</p>

These rather festive buttons have been designed by Danielle - she is pushing the boundaries on the standard wheel style buttons to bring your festive trees and snowflakes (she can also show you her snowmen buttons)! These can be added to your festive outfit or hung on your Christmas tree.

Description

Just bring yourself and your machine.  Please note you will need a sewing machine which is capable of dropping the feed dogs and a darning foot - please call me if you have any question about your machines capability for free motion stitching.

You will use Stitching KItchen's fully equipped studio and all materials will be provided.

Please note that this workshop is held in our light and spacious first floor studio at Stitching Kitchen, which is accessible by stairs.

Learn the unique techniques of the fascinating art of Goldwork Embroidery with a comprehensive design that samples essential specialised goldwork stitches and techniques.
Goldwork is mainly "laid work", much different to other embroidery techniques in that the threads and wires tend to be laid on the fabric rather than stitched through. The result of this is a very rewarding and highly textured finish.
You will learn about appropriate fabrics, how to correctly frame up your piece ready for sewing as well as discovering the many types of goldwork thread and wires available and their application.
We combine traditional wires with contemporary threads to widen the scope of goldwork embroidery.
The course is broken down into lessons, with practicals which form a finished project. Along the way, you will be given professional hints and tips to ensure you are learning to the highest standard and incorporating best practice.
Included is access to your highly experienced tutor via e.mail for six months after purchase of the course.

Hands free embroidery hoop clamp or stand. (essential)
Thread scissors and paper scissors
Goldwork embroidery scissors (essential).
Any magnifiers or visual aids you may require.
Basic skills required
You will be expected to have some stitching experience and understand basic embroidery stitches such as split stitch, satin stitch and long and short stitch. There is no age limit as long as young embroiderers are supervised.
Just be aware that there will be sharp edges on wires etc. and the techniques will require quite intricate dexterity.
Certification
A certificate of achievement is issued upon submission of images of the completed project which will be assessed by your tutor.
Learning Outcomes
Be able to identify the many types of Goldwork thread available and their application.
Have confidence with padding and application of metallic leather/fabric. (Vegans will be pleased to know that we use a lovely soft faux leather).
Be confident with techniques for application of unique goldwork embroidery threads.

<p>Create a simple needle felt picture on a Spring theme.&nbsp;<strong>A snowdrop, tulip or daffodil flower, an Easter egg&nbsp; or a duckling design. Images are created on a 10cm embroidery hoop.</strong></p>
