WORKSHOP DETAILS * Location: Abi Higgins' beautiful rural studio and grounds in Christow, Devon, South West UK. Easily accessible from Exeter, which has both an airport and a train station. * Accommodations: A range of local B&Bs and other accommodations are nearby for your convenience. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Our two-day workshops are perfect for ceramicists of all levels: * Those with limited or no previous knowledge of alternative firing techniques. * Experienced ceramicists looking to expand their skills with new techniques. WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS * Types of Clay and Making Techniques: Learn about the different clay bodies suitable for alternative firings and various making techniques. * Raku Glaze Application and Firing: Explore the process of raku glazing and firing. * Burnishing and Naked Raku: Get introduced to burnishing techniques and the two-step naked raku process. * Horsehair/Feather Firing: Experiment with adding unique effects using horsehair and feathers. * Saggar and Barrel Kilns: Make and fire a 'mummy' saggar, prepare pots with plant decorations for saggar firing, and load and fire a barrel kiln. MATERIALS AND PREPARATION * Bisqued Pieces: Participants should bring suitable bisqued pieces, either sculptural or vessel forms. Prepared pots are also available for sale at £10 each. * Detailed Information: Information on types of clay to use and bisque temperatures will be provided with booking confirmation. FOCUS Our focus is on: * Decorating techniques for alternative firing. * Introduction to firing methods. * Building confidence with raku and saggar kilns. With a plethora of history in these surrounding towns, part of this work explores the stories that transpired following the connections between Staffordshire’s popular occupational practice of mining and the habitual rituals that transpired during its time. Beliefs centred largely on negative omens that, if seen, would cause tragedy. One recurring is the belief that if a rat were seen then an accident would likely occur. These mischievous creatures came to be the centre of many tales, one being the case of stolen candles, thought to be the act of the Devil themselves, but only to be the act of devilish rats.

Walford Mill Education Trust is a registered charity which aims to promote crafts and making through events, classes, and exhibitions and by providing working space for established and emerging makers. Spring 2019 This spring brings new changes to Walford Mill. The mill, a converted historic watermill in the heart of Wimborne, has been home to Walford Mill Education Trust for over 30 years. Following the need to seek a more sustainable future, Walford Mill Education trust is changing its commercial focus and will be providing new opportunities for talented, local artists, makers and designers. The current shop on the ground floor will be replaced by a brand new education space with existing disabled access via a disabled ramp. Artists, schools, touring exhibitors and makers will soon also be able to book unique flexible art exhibition spaces on the ground floor to showcase their art and craft to the public. Although there is no longer a dedicated shop on-site almost all work on display in the exhibitions and by the makers in their studios is available for purchase, priced to suit all pockets. Studio rental space will double and the new space will be available for hire on the top floor which will be a welcome opportunity allowing local makers and artists to work and exhibit in East Dorset at competitive rates. Graduates and emerging new makers will also be able to benefit from working alongside like-minded artists enabling them to bring their work to the public eye.
