About this Training Course This 5 full-day course covers all the main elements of IChemE's Process Safety Competency framework: culture, knowledge and competence, engineering and design, human factors, systems and procedures, and assurance. This course examines the interrelation of the various techniques of process safety for analysing and managing process hazards in the hydrocarbon and chemical processing industries. There is a particular emphasis on engineering design aspects with extensive participation in individual and group exercises, tutored exercises and video case studies throughout the course to underpin key learning points. The learning is consolidated in a comprehensive case study and requires collaboration between members of each syndicate. This course has been reviewed and approved by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. IChemE is the global professional membership organisation for chemical, biochemical and process engineers and other professionals involved in the chemical, process and bioprocess industries. Course Level Basic or Foundation Trainer Your expert course leader has 50 years' experience in chemical and process safety engineering. His early career included 20 years in design and project engineering with various fine chemical and pharmaceutical companies where he designed chemical processes, specified plant equipment and selected materials for highly corrosive and toxic processes, often where textbook data was not available. This was followed by 10 years in offshore oil and gas design projects where he was responsible for setting up a Technical Safety group to change design safety practices in the aftermath of the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster. In recent years, he has been called upon to conduct various offshore and onshore incident investigations. His career has given him experience in project engineering, project management, process design and operations, safety engineering and risk management. He is a Fellow of the UK Institution of Chemical Engineers. He served on the Scottish Branch committee, and was elected chairman for a two-year term in 1991. He has also been chairman of the Safety and Reliability Society - North of Scotland Branch. He has delivered training courses in Process Hazard Analysis (HAZOP and HAZID), Process Safety Management, Hazard Awareness, Risk Assessment, Root Cause Analysis, Failure Modes & Effect Analysis and has lectured on Reliability Analysis to the M.Sc. course in Process Safety and Loss Prevention at Sheffield University. In addition to delivering training courses, he currently facilitates HAZOP / HAZID / LOPA studies and undertakes expert witness roles advising lawyers engaged in contractual disputes, usually involving the design or construction of chemical plants or Oil & Gas production facilities, or criminal prosecutions. Formal mindfulness is better known as meditation. It involves following established practices taking time out of your day to be still and silent, to focus on your breath, to be aware of sounds, senses, thoughts and feelings. It can also involve totally clearing the mind. Informal mindfulness requires no conventions. It simply means bringing mindful awareness to everyday life, to daily activities such as eating, walking, driving and housework. Informal mindfulness is also part of your interactions with other people, at work, at home and in your social life. People have been practising mindfulness for thousands of years. It is stated it originated from ancient Buddhist, Hindu, Chinese and Tao Te Ching philosophies. However, some may suggest that it has its roots in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. To give an idea of dates; Buddhism was founded around 400-500 BC by Siddhartha Gautama who was referred to as the Buddha. My feeling is that I am just grateful for all those who have practised before us from all corners of the world, inviting this practice into my life to bring calm into the chaos. 'The role of such mindfulness practices is to keep the mind properly grounded in the present moment, decreasing reactivity to what happens in the moment. It is a way of relating to all experience - positive, negative and neutral - such that overall levels of suffering are reduced and a sense of wellbeing is increased' (Germet & Fulton, 2005). Today there are a variety of definitions within the Eastern and Western approaches. We are indebted to Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn for bringing the benefits of mindful practice to the West through his Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme (based on a type of Buddhist meditation called Vipassana). Dr Kabat-Zinn defined it as 'paying attention with purpose, non-judgemental and while in the present moment' (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, 2005). Over the years, I personally have benefited physically and mentally from mindfulness by: making time for 'non-doing' allowing me to be still enough to tap into my 'inner voice' living my experiences in a non-judgemental way, accepting as it is, letting go of my need to 'control' bringing moment to moment awareness to my physical body, thoughts, feelings and emotions What I have learned is that Life happens all around us; sometimes we can select what we experience and other times the experiences are a natural part of life. Either way, mindfulness practice has supported me to recognise the difference if I only honour myself enough by giving time to do mindfulness/meditation practice. Mindfulness is a way of life, a choice of behaviour and thinking. WHAT IS THE UNIVERSAL LAW OF ATTRACTION (LOA) Main Health Benefit: Learn to listen to your Inner Coach, not your Inner Critic In accordance with the Law of Attraction, you attract into your life those things, circumstances and conditions that correspond with the nature of your dominant, habitual thoughts and beliefs, both conscious and subconscious. My name is Steph. I’m delighted you’ve found your way here to my website. So here it goes, a little about me and how I discovered this magic thing called yoga… To be honest, yoga wasn’t something I had given much thought to before I happened to find myself in the middle of a yoga class. After years of inactivity and sitting in an office chair staring at a computer nine to five, I remember how challenging my first class was. I had no idea what to expect, what I was doing or even why I was there. But, something about it brought me back the next week, and the next, and the next… Simply showing up changed everything! Do yoga with Steph at Three Towns Yoga Yoga was an unexpected discovery that took me completely by surprise. With each practice, it gradually became more and more a part of my life. My yoga practice helps me know myself better and helps keep me present and grounded as I continually search for balance in my life. Teaching and sharing what I’ve discovered about yoga so far is a real privilege and I’m dedicated to learning more so I can share it with you. I’ve been able to practise and learn with many wonderful teachers who have helped me discover more about this amazing practice. I completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training qualification with CYS Glasgow at Merchant City Yoga. I’ve studied with Bernie Clark, completing a further 50 hour Yin Yoga teacher training course. I practise regularly under the expert eye of my teacher Judi Farrell at Merchant City Yoga and assist her in the ‘Mysore’ room. I’ve also practised and learned with a host of amazing teachers including Rose Ann McKean, Siobhan Fitzgerald, David Keil, Scott Johnson, David Robson, Peg Mulqueen, Jacinta McBurnley, Taylor Hunt and James Boag. In teaching and sharing yoga, I hope to open the door to possibility, discovery and change for others with the same care and compassion as it was opened for me.
