When The Party's Over: substance use, addictions and workplace support

By Mindmaps Wellbeing

When The Party's Over: Substance use, addictions and workplace support  We use substances for all sorts of reasons—to manage stress or illness, to sleep, to unwind, to have fun, to cope. It may not always be healthy, but it often makes sense. “Substance use” spans a wide spectrum of meaning and social acceptability—and that context shapes how we judge others, and ourselves.  The word “drugs” often conjures up extremes, but the reality spans everything from your morning coffee and after work drinks, to your vape break, to prescription medications, to substances that are illegal to buy, or taboo to use. What society chooses to label as acceptable—or not—sometimes has less to do with harm, and more to do with social and cultural norms and values.  As we explore in this workshop, feelings of judgement and shame frequently perpetuate the cycle of substance addiction; so how can we successfully modify our behaviour if we can’t talk about it, or ask for help and support, especially at work?  This workshop is not a lesson about the dangers or symptoms of drug misuse, It is an engaging, thought-provoking exploration designed to increase understanding and compassion.  Workshop outline:  Reframing the drug landscape – breaking down the stigma  Challenging the misconceptions about substance use and addiction  Exploring useful strategies to support progress and prevent relapse  How to better recognise the signs of difficulty and hold empathetic conversations  Navigate self-help, peer, and professional support options for the workplace  FIND OUT MORE HERE Build your own training package At Mindmaps Wellbeing, we know that every business is unique, and no team is the same. That’s why we’ve developed our range of short, specialist wellbeing and mental health themed workshops—a fully flexible approach to workplace wellbeing training.  Because all of our workshops are short and impactful, you can build a package that truly meets your organisation’s needs. Maybe your team would benefit from some training on self-care, starting difficult conversations or coping with remote working? By Mindmaps Wellbeing

Grief unscripted Grief Unscripted; Rebuilding after loss  2-Hour Workshop  Grief isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience – it’s messy, unpredictable, and completely unique to each of us. That’s why we call it Grief Unscripted – because, just like life, there’s no script, no right way to grieve, and no timeline to follow.  Whether it’s loss, change, or the unexpected twists life throws at us, this workshop provides practical strategies and holistic psychology to help us understand grief and mourning. We’re breaking down the stigma around this natural, yet individual, human response.  Workshop outline: Workshop outline:   Understand grief as a deeply individual, yet universally shared human experience.  Recognise the different forms grief can take, including anticipatory, disenfranchised, and cumulative grief Explore the influences of culture, tradition, and personal beliefs on coping and stigma  Challenge misconceptions about grief and mourning, and learn to support yourself and others compassionately.  Develop confidence in holding open, stigma-breaking conversations around grief and loss.   Join us for Grief Unscripted – because to grieve is to be human. OUR STORY Our Story Macarons & More is the passion project of one man: Tim Kinnaird. Tim originally trained as a doctor and worked as a consultant paediatrician in Norwich. Although he loved his job, his passion for food was a thread that ran throughout his life – and when he was given the opportunity to explore it further, everything changed. As a contestant on MasterChef 2010, Tim caught the nation’s attention with his gentle manner and showstopping desserts. On his journey to the final, he cooked at Michelin-starred restaurants and even served a banquet for the Maharajah of Rajasthan. “Tim has the gift of making sweet things incredibly delicious - and his macarons are to die for.” JOHN TORODE The experience inspired Tim to leave his job in February 2010 and start a business from his kitchen. MasterChef judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace had spotted his ability for creating exquisite patisseries, and so did the public. Within six months, the business outgrew Tim’s house. #TeamMacaron was formed to cope with the growing demand and quickly grew to a nine-person operation once production moved to a kitchen in Watton, Norfolk. Expanding the team has brought in a whole range of additional skills and personalities. Macarons & More has been growing ever since. In 2011 we launched online, meaning we could deliver our delights throughout the UK. Then in March 2013, our beautiful shop opened in Norwich’s Royal Arcade. By 2014, it was getting tricky to meet demand both in the shop and from our wholesale and online customers. Don’t get us wrong; it was a very nice problem to have! With the support of our fantastic sponsors, including Belling, Magimix and Kenwood, we opened our new central Norwich bakery in January 2015. Now, we can cook up even more treats than ever. Our bakery is also where we run the very popular Macarons & More Cookery School. Led by Tim and the Macarons & More team, our classes are informal and hands-on, helping keen amateur bakers learn new techniques and recipes in a fun environment. In September 2018, we opened a second shop in Norwich’s busiest shopping mall: intu Chapelfield. As well as the support of our amazing customers, Macarons & More has received local and national acclaim. We won the Beautiful Baking category in the EDP Food and Drink Awards in 2013, and we were runners up in the Observer Food Monthly Awards in the Independent Retailer category in 2013, 2015 and 2017. Tim’s passion and dedication has built a wonderful independent business at the heart of Norfolk. Why not try one of our macarons and find out what it’s all about.

Puppy School tutors come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many have thriving careers in rescue shelters and some work as veterinary nurses, dog walkers, dog groomers, dog training professionals or behaviourists. Others work as accountants or teachers during the day but have many dog-related hobbies and interests in their free time. Some have left full-time work with dogs to raise a family. What they all have in common is a passion for training puppies and a keen interest in animal welfare and behaviour. Wag Bone Show 2005All our Puppy School tutors have been carefully selected for their experience and practical skills with dogs. Our tutors are also chosen to have empathy, respect and concern for people since it is essential that the same reward-based training techniques be extended to the owners of the puppies in the classes as well as the puppies themselves. Many of our tutors are full members of the Association of Pet Behaviour Councillors (APBC) Puppy School is proud to be a Practitioner Organisation of the Animal Behaviour Training Council (ABTC) and to uphold its values. The ABTC is the regulatory body that represents animal trainers and animal behaviour therapists to both the public and to legislative bodies. It is the only animal welfare charity that is primarily concerned with protecting the psychological welfare of animals undergoing training and behaviour activities. Many of our tutors and associate tutors are recognised as Animal Training Instructors with the ABTC and others are working towards the qualification. Some of our tutors are also registered as Clinical Animal Behaviourists and Accredited Behaviourists with the ABTC. Many of our tutors are registered with the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), a benchmark of excellence in positive, reward-based dog training. Some of our tutors are registered with the Pet Professional Guild of Force Free Trainers (PPG), some are also members of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT), and others are Kennel Club Accredited Instructors (KCAI). Our Puppy School tutors and associate tutors must undergo extensive training before teaching Puppy School classes. This includes an application and interview process, six days of comprehensive theory covering a range of topics from animal learning to lesson plans (taught by founder and director, Gwen Bailey and Puppy School tutor of 15 years, Catherine Tomlinson, both of whom are APBC registered and registered with ABTC as clinical animal behaviourists), 3 days of supervised practical work and a comprehensive correspondence course. We monitor our Puppy School classes regularly to ensure the highest standards are consistently being maintained. Tutors are carefully overseen by Regional Managers to make sure they are using all the skills necessary to become excellent, positive, reward-based puppy trainers. Our tutors must uphold our Code of Conduct at all times and must complete a sufficient amount of Continued Professional Development each year. You will find many of our tutors at events such as the APBC Annual Conference, Woof Conference and at many other seminars, workshops and lectures across the country that provide insight into the science behind modern training techniques. Many of our tutors have studied to degree level or higher and have a BSc or MSc in Animal Behaviour and Psychology or Zoology. All our Puppy School tutors and associate tutors strive to uphold standards and keep up to date with the latest behavioural science. Founder and Director Gwen Bailey gwen bailey"I've lived and worked with dogs all my life, starting with the family's assortment of cross-breeds and a weekend/holiday job at the local kennel which taught me so much and gave me lots of practical handling experience. Later, with a BSc degree in Zoology, I wanted to do something to help dogs have a better life so I became Information Officer and later Animal Behaviourist for one of the UK's largest animal welfare charities. After working with rescue dogs as Head of Animal Behaviour for the charity for 12 years, I realised that there would always be more dogs needing new homes than there would be homes for them to go to. In addition, many of these dogs had behaviour problems which made it more difficult to rehome them. The task seemed never ending. It became clear that the way forward lay in education of new owners, particularly during the early stages of puppy-hood when owners are keen to learn and puppies are very impressionable. So in 2002, after writing the successful Perfect Puppy book, I set up Puppy School, which has grown into a fantastic UK network of well-trained professional trainers who helps new owners give their puppies the best possible start in life. Well-trained, well-behaved dogs is the goal so that owners want to keep them all of their lives and even if the dog is unlucky enough to find itself in rescue one day, it will be easier to rehome. Thousands of puppies have now passed through Puppy Schools across the country and we hope that all of them have had better lives as a result". Gwen has written 13 books on animal behaviour and lectures in the UK and internationally. For further information, please visit my Dog Problems Solved website.
