This Clinical Risk Assessment and Documentation training 1/2 day course is designed to provide adult health and social care workers with an understanding of the principles of safety, risk management and risk mitigation within a healthcare environment.
Why Is Clinical Risk Assessment Important?
Safety is at the centre of all gold standard health care. Clinical Risk Assessment and Management is integral to the co-ordination and delivery of effective and safe care. 
It is acknowledged that risk cannot be completely eliminated; indeed some risks are difficult or even impossible to predict, however advocating a systematic approach to Clinical Risk Management, underpinned by effective communication and record keeping skills maximises the chances of managing risk

Why Is It Important?
It is estimated in the UK there are at least 90,000 people with long term urinary catheters (using them for three months or more).
Catheterisation is a common procedure, yet it carries many risks including trauma, urinary tract infection, encrustation, urethral perforation, bladder calculi neoplastic changes, and those with spinal injuries there is the risk of autonomic dysreflexia.
About 1 in 5 people who stay in hospital are fitted with a catheter, sometimes just as a matter of routine rather than requirement. It should therefore be the therapy of choice only when all other interventions are deemed to be inappropriate or have been unsuccessful.

Overview
This Measuring Observations Training is a 1/2 day blended learning course allows attendees to demonstrate theoretical and practical simulation within a classroom or virtual environment.
Participants will further their knowledge and skills in measuring observations across varied healthcare settings.
Why Is It Important?
Clinical observations allow healthcare professionals to be aware of the health status of patients and allow tracking of patient’s health status. Patients within all healthcare and community settings may be at risk of physiological deterioration and not all patient deterioration can be predicted- so all patients (with the exception of some patients at the end of their life) require observation which includes the taking and recording of vital signs.
Early detection, timeliness and competency of response to changes in clinical observations are important determinants of clinical outcome in people with acute illness. ‘Track and trigger’ tools such as Early Warning Scores assist clinicians in spotting deteriorating patients.

Understand the baseline for vital signs
Measure Clinical Observations including Respiration Rate, Oxygen Saturation, Systolic Blood Pressure, Pulse Rate, Level of Consciousness and Temperature
Record the physiological observations taken correctly
Analyse and interpret the data collected accurately and take appropriate action
Recognise when to escalate if the observations are outside normal limits

Our bowel management training course allows learners to undertake theory-based simulated practice in a classroom environment.


Overview
Bowel Management Training – Facilitated by registered nurses with first-hand clinical experience, this ½ day blended learning course allows attendees to demonstrate theoretical and practical simulation training within a classroom environment.
Participants will further their knowledge and skills related to support patients with bowel care interventions.
Why Is It Important?
Healthcare professionals need to be aware of the local and systemic effects of constipation, in order to prevent them effectively.


“Bowel care is a fundamental area of patient/client care that is frequently overlooked, yet it is of paramount importance for the quality of life of our patients/clients, many of whom are hesitant to admit to bowel problems or to discuss such issues.” (Royal College of Nursing (RCN) 2008).


Assessment to identify the cause of constipation will help to establish a plan of care for treatment. The effects of constipation can make patients feel very unwell, particularly if they compound a pre-existing medical condition.

When a swallowing problem (dysphagia) is present, there may be a high risk of food, fluids and saliva entering the lungs (aspiration). The person may be not be aware that this is happening (silent aspiration). 
Aspiration can be dangerous as it can cause pneumonia. The person may also be at higher risk of choking.

To have a basic understanding of the term ‘Dysphagia’ and the four stages of swallowing or deglutition
Understand causes of Dysphagia including Diseases and the Anatomy and Physiology from normal to a person with Dysphagia
Recognise the signs and symptoms that require assessment of Dysphagia
Have an awareness of the referral process for Investigations
Gain an understanding of further Tests, Hospital Diagnosis, Treatments, Therapies and Dietary requirements
Learn how these apply to the patient group
Be able to understand how Psychosocial aspects of Dysphagia can be recognised

How do I attend?

EITHER -
CLASSROOM OPTION - Attend one of our scheduled classroom locations, completing your Introduction to Phlebotomy Course over 2 days. You will also complete your Advanced Training at the end of the first day and your Competency Training at the end of the second day.

Our Introduction to Phlebotomy and Advanced Phlebotomy Training Kits are supplied at no charge when booking our virtual classroom training option.
If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available to add at time of booking. Our comprehensive training kits each mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video tutorials, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for a one day Zoom session to complete your Introduction to Phlebotomy virtual classroom training, followed by your Advanced Training in the evening of the same day. You have the option to add a classroom-based competency session, awarding a CPD Accredited Geopace Certificate of Competency, at time of booking.

Our Virtual Classroom option includes two very comprehensive training kits - one for your introductory course and one for your advanced course. Kits are included at no charge (normally £79.95 each) and are yours to keep and to continue to practice with after you have finished your courses. Quarterly meetings at the Academy
To ensure a well-rounded learning experience, you will be required to attend face-to-face lessons at the Academy on a quarterly basis, which means every three months. These sessions serve several important purposes:

Yes, you will have 3 months’ time from the start of your course to find a placement.
The Academy provides a list of Private and NHS Dental Surgeries, who are regularly contacting us when looking for more Trainee Dental Nurses, so you can contact them directly as a registered student at the Academy. This is a paid job, unless you would like to work voluntary for personal reasons. We also provide a reference letter to the employee in case you need it.

The curriculum is based on the GDC (General Dental Council) registration requirements for dental nurses. It sets out the knowledge, skills and behavioural requirements that should be developed and demonstrated. These are set out in terms of professional competencies, with the assessment method clearly outlined (e.g. how the skills and knowledge will be assessed in the final examinations – via written questions such as multiple choice (MCQ) or extended matching questions (EMQ) or via Objective Structured Clinical Examinations – OSCEs). When are the exams?
There are two exams:
1. Multiple choice theory exam. November and March.
2. Practical exam. January and June. 
Record of Experience (eROE)
To be eligible to sit your first exam, you have to complete your electronic Record of Experience (eROE). The eROE has to be submitted to your tutor by 31st Jan for March exam, and 31st August for November exam.

GPT009:
Understanding different ECG equipment types
ECG equipment - set-up and calibration
Includes professionalism, consent, IPC
and legal requirement
Patient preparation
How to correctly apply electrodes to limbs and chest
Identify artifacts (equipment and patients
Identify and recognise routine traces
Identify and recognise non-routine traces
Identify traces requiring urgent attention
Labelling and reporting
GPT010:
Understand the acceptable variations within the normal ECG of healthy adults.
Recognise the expected patterns of an ECG from a healthy child from birth onwards and identify abnormalities.
Interpret abnormal ECG patterns in adults.
Diagnose arrhythmias as an underlying cause of palpitations and syncope. Exploring sinus rhythm, extrasystoles, paroxysmal tachycardia and the importance of a physical examination.
Identifying syncopal episodes attributable to cardiovascular disease as opposed to arrhythmias.
Recognise ECG markers for tachycardias, bradycardias, pre-excitation syndromes, bi-fascicular block, and first-degree block with bundle branch block.
Differentiate between supraventricular and ventricular extrasystoles and be able to diagnose broad complex tachycardias, ventricular flutter and fibrillation, sick sinus syndrome, and Stokes-Adams attacks.
Recognise and identify symptoms associated with the causes of acute or chronic chest pain in patients who present with myocardial infarction (heart attack), pulmonary embolism, significant central pulmonary embolism, pericarditis, aortic dissection, oesophageal rupture, spinal disorders, vertebral collapse, posterior infarction, and angina.
Recognise symptoms indicative of conditions such as pulmonary oedema, chest diseases, and pulmonary congestion.





After the course
GPT009:
Safely and competently set up an ECG machine
Introduce patients to the ECG test, adhering to compliancy requirements before and after testing
Perform an ECG test to national guidelines
Understand basic traces and their correlation to cardiac issues
Recognise normal and erroneous recordings
Recognise recordings that require urgent medical follow-up
Complete the recording and label (or record digital copies) as per guidelines
GPT010:
Appreciate normal and abnormal ECG variations in the context of varying pathologies.
Be able to determine whether an arrhythmia has an underlying cause that requires medical intervention.
Interpret ECGs as a function of the patient's ongoing cardiac management.
Understand and apply the Burce Protocol exercise test in relevant clinical situations.
Know how to clinically respond to a patient with chest pain including further investigations required, pain relief, history and examination and echocardiogram.
Understand and apply the fundamental principles of arrhythmia management.
Understand the primary causes of heart disease and the diagnostic process.
Appreciate the importance of the ECG as a diagnostic tool alongside the patient’s history and clinical presentation and recognising its limitations.
