Founded by Mark Ciavola 6 years ago and originally based in Brighton, our new home in London is a fully functional, multi-use studio space offering 5 potters wheels, a pug mill, handbuilding facilities and kiln services. I am self-taught ceramic sculptor. My passion for painting and sculpture began as a young child and is still my main obsession in life, a means of expression, my therapy, my greatest love. I add a quirky, sometimes humourus twist to my female forms and my animal sculptures. I work from my imagination preferring to avoid realism at all costs! My work is hand built useing coiling or slabbing techniques. After fireing my pieces are finished using crackle glaze, underglaze or stains which are wiped back to emphasise textures. I use grogged earthenware and stoneware handbuilding clay. I sometimes paint fantasy designs with acrylics and also teach in my home studio in Worcester. I am living my dream. My work has been exhibited in UK galleries including Guildford House, Birmingham, Bowes Museum, Gloucester, Wolverhampton, Worcester and many more. I also exhibit my sculptures at the annual Showborough House sculpture exhibition, Twyning, Tewkesbury. I have worked with different media over the years in the wedding industry making wacky bride and groom wedding sculptures. I was commissioned by the BBC to surprising chef Ainsley Harriott, with a caricature of himself on the TV show Ready, Steady, Cook. I have also discussed my huge, wacky sculptures on TV whilst exhibiting them in Bowes Museum, County Durham. A big thrill for me was being commissioned to create small sculptures to be photographed for the front cover of Vogue Italia. Another TV commission was lool a like clay figures for celebrities Matt and Emma Willis. I sculpted a large chocolate wedding centrepiece for actor/singer Gareth Gates.

Studio Pottery London is a light-filled and spacious workshop for all who are attracted to making with clay, from absolute beginners to more experienced potters. We are uniquely located in central London in the heart of Victoria. A place of calm and community, our carefully curated space provides a perfect environment for city-dwellers to come together to learn and create. Our classroom of 12 wheels ensuring intimate classes. Our members area is carefully designed to give the members premium space. Our resident potter welcomes members and students into his private studio for one-to-one throwing and mentoring sessions. Together, with the teaching team and technician, we provide excellent support for the studio community. Curated window and vitrine displays of historic and contemporary ceramics inspire our makers and are for sale to visitors. The community can socialise in the central area with its library, kitchenette and facilities. This space is also for talks and workshops. In the rear of the studio is the kiln and glazing room, monitored by our in-house technician.

All of the pottery is made using red earthenware clay and traditional craft methods. Most of the work is thrown on the potters wheel and decorate using coloured slips and glaze. Sometimes materials are added to vary the texture. It may then be torn or broken and reassembled to make contemporary vessels created or recycled from pieces. The images, colours and textures are based on drawings made in the garden or allotment. Using a love of traditional slip decorated and county pottery to comment on our contemporary relationship with the environment. Red clay represents a need to connect with the earth and our long history of care,use and misuse. These pots create an honest picture of this relationship, both good and bad. Standing up for earwigs and brussels sprouts, rusting wheelbarrows and decay, as integral parts of the landscape. Without them life would be infinitely dull and sterile.

Sundragon Pottery is a “not for profit” Community Association, run as a members club. It began life in late 2013, when Becky Belcher, Fiona Scanlan, and other refugees from the seven potteries that closed down in Birmingham (due to funding cuts), set up the studio to have somewhere to “play with clay”. It has flourished because of the hard work, determination, and benevolence of our members. We offer a variety of membership options and courses for experienced and aspiring potters of all ages and abilities, as well as one-on-one tutoring and pottery parties.
