MAGIC BALKAN MUSIC ACADEMY Balkan Melody Mastery Learn great Balkan tunes and how to play them amazingly. When? Wednesday evenings, 19:00 – 20:30h GMT Where? Online on ZOOM, limited spaces in-person in Kenton, London HA3 This course will explore authentic Balkan tunes, emphasizing essential techniques for playing with precision and expression. The curriculum is taught via a mixture of by-ear learning and sheet music, allowing participants to delve into dynamic phrasing, articulation, ornamentation, tone, and speed. Detailed Information The Balkan region is known for its rich and diverse musical heritage, which has been influenced by various cultures and traditions over the centuries. I am launching this new course to share the finer things about Balkan music. The correct notes can be played by any musician, but how often do I find myself in tears when listening to a great musician who gets it so wrong, simply because they did not have the opportunity to travel, listen, and learn from native masters? Instead, they might have learned it third-hand or from a piece of sheet music. Western classical music notation cannot fully capture the essence of other types of music, and a metronome can stifle the authentic phrasing of asymmetric Balkan rhythms. I am not a native Balkan music master either, but I feel very privileged that I had the opportunity to learn from several of them, and engage in endless, wild jam sessions. In this course, I aim to convey not only the right musical feel but also the fervour and passion for this music. The weekly course primarily targets melodic instruments. Tunes will be taught by ear, initially using the voice (sheet music will be sent out beforehand), and then practiced on the instrument. Special attention will be devoted to phrasing, articulation, and, of course, the typical charisma of Balkan music to give it that truly magical sound. Whilst I am a violinist and will demonstrate and lead with the violin and voice, the course is suitable for any melodic instrument. The level is aimed at intermediate to advanced players, although ambitious and diligent lower-intermediate players will also do well. We will briefly cover accompaniment aspects, including chord progressions, rhythm patterns, and techniques. Dedicated workshops for chordal instruments and percussion will be offered as we progress. The course will run weekly and continuously, with no regular sessions during usual UK school holidays. Booking will be in advance in 5-session units. Each unit can be booked individually, or you can sign up for an annual booking and pay in 6 instalments distributed over the whole year, receiving a 20% discount on the total course fee. This workshop delves into the details of chord progressions and accompaniment patterns, including riffs and breaks. It will be co-hosted by an experienced guitarist. Balkan Percussion Special: A workshop designed for percussionists to study the rhythm patterns and techniques related to the course material. This workshop will be co-hosted by an experienced Balkan percussionist. Creating inclusive career pathways for young people: Afternoon Cuppa Session Tuesday 30 September, 2pm - 3.30pm In partnership with GEM Join Kids in Museums and Group for Education in Museums (GEM) ahead of November’s Discover Creative Careers Month, for an informal virtual briefing and discussion session about inclusive career pathways for young people in museums. The theme for Kids in Museums Takeover Day in 2025 is careers. Our research shows Takeover Day can support children and young people to learn about different jobs in museums and develop their skills for employment in the heritage sector and beyond. For heritage organisations, Takeover Day is a great opportunity to connect with different groups of children and young people, attract new audiences and pilot new ways of working. This session will include a case study from the National Army Museum about their first careers themed Takeover Day with a local primary school. Since 2023, GEM has been researching work experience, work placements and inclusive pathways for young people in the museum sector. Members of the GEM team will give an update about their research, and you can also hear from Boston Manor House, one of the organisations featured in the recent GEM Case Studies: Career Pathways in Museums. In this session, we will: Hear a case study from the National Army Museum about hosting their first careers themed Takeover Day in 2024. Learn more about research into inclusive career pathways for young people in museums from GEM. Hear a case study from Boston Manor House about the range of career-based opportunities they offer for local young people. Create informal opportunities for attendees to share their ideas for creating more inclusive career pathways in their organisations or examples of careers focused work they have already undertaken. Reggie’s responsibilities include supporting and developing strategy for human capital, public engagement and DE&I initiatives.  Reggie previously served as Partner at RON Transatlantic EG from 2012-2019, an international financial holding company with interests in the financial services, logistics, energy, industrial and beer sectors in the United States, Latin America and Europe. The group, via its portfolio companies, encompasses assets under management and revenues of over $14 billion. Mr. Love’s work at the firm focused on financial services and energy investments.  Prior to joining Transatlantic, Reggie served at the White House as personal aide to President Barack Obama from 2009-2011, where he was responsible for assisting with the coordination and completion of the President’s daily schedule as well as coordinating with other White House offices to set up long and medium range planning. Love moved to the District of Columbia in 2006 to work for then Senator Obama after short stints in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers.  Love is a graduate of Duke University, holds and MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of the New York Times Best Seller, Power Forward, My Presidential Education, which is a collection of stories and principles learned during his time working for President Obama and being a captain for the all-time most winning NCAA coach, Mike Krzyzewski.  Love also serves on the boards of Cox Media Group, Blade Air Mobility, National Summer Learning Association, Center for Environmental Farming Systems, Organizing for Action, Military Bowl Committee, Team Works, and The New Renaissance.
