As director of Simply First Aid, Piers Osborne has taken on this exciting role after years of preparation. Having started in the leisure industry, working with children and babies, he moved to education where he spent 9 years lecturing on a range of further, higher and community education courses for the Sports, Early Years and Community Studies departments. He left this role to get out of the class room and into informal education through outdoor activities. Almost since it’s inception Piers has been a member of Cornwall Search and Rescue Team helping to prepare it’s medics as the Medical Training Officer. He had the privilege to work with some extraordinary people until a relocation forced him to step down. He was also a member of Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Lifesaving Club and Watergate Bay Surf Lifesaving Club and an active member of the Scout Movement. As well as specialising in outdoor and wilderness first aid he continues to specialise in paediatric first aid and education. Over the years Piers has worked with a number of First Aid training providers, including the Red Cross, Royal Life Saving Society and St John Ambulance, to deliver First Aid and Casualty Care across Europe and Australia. He has over 15 years experience and was responsible for the Metropolitan Caloundra beaches for a number of years. During this time Dom was responsible for the ongoing development of all the beach personnel. As such he wrote and delivered bespoke training solutions and linked training to the Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguards Association scheme. Dom provides our Quality Assurance and continues to deliver training when required. He is as comfortable behind a desk as he is being lowered into shark infested seas from a rescue helicopter! He has long since left the world of lifeguarding behind and now provides both medical and security solutions for mine sites, race meets and the like. Dom has recently been to conferences on the East and West Coasts of America in order to secure opportunities for the ‘Event Medics‘ side of the business. He has competed in the Australian Open Iron Man, his 3rd ever triathlon, and was an elite cyclist. When not training, you’ll find him spending time with his family and ‘staying salty’! Our regular coffee mornings and evening meetings are informal and relaxed. We often invite guest speakers from education, health and early years to talk to parents about local SEND services and answer their questions. Even if a particular guest speaker does not interest you, there is always time for a chat and a hot drink at every meeting. Children are also welcome to attend. There is no pressure to come regularly or even stay for the whole session as we know that your free time can be limited and unpredictable. Events We run workshops and training events for parents on a wide range of SEND-related issues. As well as gaining expertise and insight, you will be supported by other parent carer trainers who may have lived through the stage of your ‘journey’ and who will have knowledge and information to share with you that could be really beneficial. We also organise information days which give parents, carers and young people the chance to meet local services and providers. Partnership working We work closely with Brent Council, health providers, schools and other organisations to help design and deliver local services that meet the needs of children and young people with SEND. We regularly attend their meetings and committees to feedback the views and experiences of our members. Parent carers can help to highlight problems that are frequently experienced by families of children with additional needs, and this knowledge is useful to help professionals make informed choices about local services. Evidence shows that this sort of active participation leads to improved service provision, take up and ultimately better outcomes for children and young people with SEND. WHO WE ARE The forum is an independent, parent-led organisation that helps bring together parents and carers of children and young people aged 0-25 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Brent. We help and support families of children with SEND by providing information, advice and a listening ear. By gathering ideas and feedback from our members, we also work closely with local organisations to positively improve the planning and delivery of services in Brent for children and young people with additional needs and disabilities. Set up in 2017, our forum is run by a friendly group of volunteers who are all parent carers and understand the issues and challenges that looking after a child with SEND can bring.

St Angela Merici Feast Day: 27 January. The school has moved through several phases during its history... The Ursulines were founded by St Angela Merici who lived in Italy in the 16th century. St Angela was born around 1475 in Desenzano on the shores of Lake Garda in Northern Italy. She was left an orphan in early life and spent several of her early years at Salo with her uncle. She acted as an advisor to the rich and influential and was known for her ability to reconcile those with differences. She was a ready helper of the poor and needy and she took a foremost place in what was very much a man's world. She moved to Brescia - the scene of her main work and where she eventually founded her company. On the 25th November 1535 St Angela founded the company of St Ursula, putting the company under the patronage of this early English saint, who was popular in the middle ages as the Patroness of learning. This was a particularly appropriate choice, as it reflected her concerns for the development and fulfilment of women. Her companions lived in their own homes but were consecrated to a life of poverty and virginity. After St Angela's death in 1540 her company became involved in evangelisation especially through education. Many branches of St Angela's company flourished and spread. There are many ways in which St Angela had a lasting effect on the company she founded and on the Church. Like St Paul she made herself all things to all people for the sake of the Gospel to bring all people to Christ. In her writings there is a great emphasis on prayer and all through her life St Angela was known as a woman of prayer. She also made a clear stand against the luxury of the world around her. She emphasized true poverty of spirit and trust in God alone. St Angela was also an educator in the widest sense of the word and in particular in the Christian context of leading people to find Christ in the circumstances of their lives.
