Would you like to learn how to develop a regular meditation &amp; breathing practice &amp; gain tools to support you in an increasingly challenging and uncertain world? If so, READ ON...
During this course, you will develop an in-depth personal experience of mindfulness meditation and dynamic breathing techniques and learn to build the foundations of a sustained personal practice, with a view to applying this in your life. The programme will consist of 6 x 100-minute sessions on Monday evenings, with a focus on background information, personal reflection and - most importantly - practice. Each session will build on the previous one, and homework exercises and recorded practices will be given out each week. You will go away with a 70-page handbook full of background information, poetry and guided practices plus you will gain access to an online podcast with guided practices led by your Mindfulness coach. The course will be delivered on&nbsp;Zoom&nbsp;and you will have the opportunity to share experiences of the practices with a community of learners, all from the comfort of your own home.
The course is great for both absolute beginners and those with previous experience of mindfulness and breathing techniques, who may be looking to refresh their insights and experience again. Quarterly MHFAider Facilitated ForumSupport for MHFAiders: providing guidance and reassurance they are not alone. Our MHFAider guidance &amp; support forums are tailored to provide MHFAiders with the clarity they need to excel in their role. We believe it&#39;s important to offer a safe space for MHFAiders to discuss their role, while staying up to date with the latest best practices and information.Outline of session. Part one: Reflecting on the previous quarter as a MHFAider in this section, group discussions will focus on assessing how the previous quarter has been as a MHFAider. Participants are encouraged to come prepared with questions about the role or a recent experience they have had, which could serve as a &ldquo;case study&rdquo; for guidance and reassurance.Part two: Focused topic discussion explore a particular topic in greater depth. Our experienced instructor team or a qualified guest speaker will guide our discussion, facilitate practical tasks, or share relevant videos. This is also an opportunity for bite-sized training &amp; resource sharing.Our MINDWELL Companion&#39;s live feature allows for online sessions that are available in either a one or two-hour duration, depending on your requirements.Topic for July 31st session is focusing on &#39;Motivation to Change.&#39;

Outline of session
Part one: Reflecting on the previous quarter as a MHFAider In this section, group discussions will focus on assessing how the previous quarter has been as a MHFAider. MHFAiders are encouraged to come prepared with questions about the role or a recent experience they have had, which could serve as a “case study” for guidance and reassurance.  

Part two: Focused topic discussion explore a particular topic in greater depth. Our experienced instructor team or a qualified guest speaker will guide the discussion, facilitate practical tasks, or share relevant videos. This is also an opportunity for continued learning, improving knowledge and resource sharing.

M03 - Specialised and Advanced Phlebotomy Equipment:
The centrifuge - overview. Safe operation and use. Managing a centrifuge breakage or spillage.
Equipment and practices in unusual situations.
Patients with special needs and requiring specific attention.
Equipment preparation for blood samples that are collected at
0 degrees, 37 degrees C and other non-standard conditions.
A look at advances in technology and how to use the latest devices.

What is POC Testing? Advantages, Disadvantages and Clinical
Outcomes. Comparison of POC with lab testing. 10 common POC tests. Roles for phlebotomists performing POC Tests.

Using the Monovette system in aspiration mode - correct use and applications.
Using the Monovette system in evacuated mode - correct use and applications.
4 - IR Vein Detector:
Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.
5 - Veins in back of hand:
Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.
10 - Microtube collection

'Interventional Pain Medicine applied to Palliative Care Patients' by Dr Andrew Jones, Consultant Anaesthetist. 

This presentation will cover a brief background of the Hospice movement, the mechanisms of pain in the brain and spinal cord will be discussed. The limitations of pain medication will be presented. Thus, interventional pain techniques may have value for patients whose pain is not controlled. The interventional techniques available will be shown.

Dr Jones, qualified in 1982 from Barts Hospital in London and after a wide range of junior roles in different specialties he started training in Anaesthesia in Merseyside. He had always been interested in the treatment of pain and was able to pursue further training in Pain Medicine. Andy became a consultant anaesthetist in 1994 and in addition a consultant in Pain Medicine in 1996. The rest is history.

Quarterly meetings at the Academy
To ensure a well-rounded learning experience, you will be required to attend face-to-face lessons at the Academy on a quarterly basis, which means every three months. These sessions serve several important purposes:

The Academy provides a list of Private and NHS Dental Surgeries, who are regularly contacting us when looking for more Trainee Dental Nurses, so you can contact them directly as a registered student at the Academy. This is a paid job, unless you would like to work voluntary for personal reasons. We also provide a reference letter to the employee in case you need it.

The curriculum is based on the GDC (General Dental Council) registration requirements for dental nurses. It sets out the knowledge, skills and behavioural requirements that should be developed and demonstrated. These are set out in terms of professional competencies, with the assessment method clearly outlined (e.g. how the skills and knowledge will be assessed in the final examinations – via written questions such as multiple choice (MCQ) or extended matching questions (EMQ) or via Objective Structured Clinical Examinations – OSCEs). When are the exams?
There are two exams:
1. Multiple choice theory exam. November and March.
2. Practical exam. January and June. 
Record of Experience (eROE)
To be eligible to sit your first exam, you have to complete your electronic Record of Experience (eROE). The eROE has to be submitted to your tutor by 31st Jan for March exam, and 31st August for November exam.

How do I attend?

EITHER -
CLASSROOM OPTION - Attend one of our scheduled classroom locations, completing your Introduction to Phlebotomy Course over 2 days. You will also complete your Advanced Training at the end of the first day and your Competency Training at the end of the second day.

Our Introduction to Phlebotomy and Advanced Phlebotomy Training Kits are supplied at no charge when booking our virtual classroom training option.
If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available to add at time of booking. Our comprehensive training kits each mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video tutorials, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for a one day Zoom session to complete your Introduction to Phlebotomy virtual classroom training, followed by your Advanced Training in the evening of the same day. You have the option to add a classroom-based competency session, awarding a CPD Accredited Geopace Certificate of Competency, at time of booking.

Our Virtual Classroom option includes two very comprehensive training kits - one for your introductory course and one for your advanced course. PART 2 - Skills and Practical Development:
Safely and competently set up and maintain a Peripheral IV Infusion.

PART 1 - THEORY (ONLINE)
M1 - Peripheral IV Cannulation - Introduction:
Definitions - understanding terminology relating to PIVC.
IV Therapy and NMC guidelines.
M2 - Legal & Professional Responsibilities:
Legal Obligations and Accountability. Criminal, Civil and
Contractual law in Healthcare. Vicarious Liability and your
Duty of Care.
M3 - Anatomy & Physiology:
Sites appropriate to IV cannulation. Hand vs. arm.
Advantages and disadvantages of relevant veins.
An overview of Homeostasis and Fluid Balance.
M4 - Hygiene and Infection Prevention & Control (IPC):
Reducing healthcare-associated infections. Keeping Safe.
Bloodborne Pathogens and Work Practice Controls.
Standard Precautions. Waste Disposal. Needle-stick injuries.
M5 - Indications and Advantages:
When to cannulate, infusion types and benefits over
alternative infusion routes. Continuous and intermittent infusion.
Prophylactic use before procedures and in unstable patients.
Contraindications.
M6 - Equipment:
Cannula types, sizes and colour coding. How to select
appropriate size. Equipment overview for total procedure.
M7 - Vein Choice for Cannulation:
Correct vein selection. Which veins to avoid.
How to manage an unsuccessful cannulation.
M8 - Procedures:
Full procedure for cannulation including correct documentation.
M8: Guide to Cannulation - revision

M9 - Contraindications:
When inappropriate to cannulate including patients with specific health conditions.
M10 - Complications:
A detailed look at potential complications during and after
cannulation, including phlebitis, infections, petechiae and haematomas. Clinical signs and corrective actions.

PART 2 (CLASSROOM:
1 - Welcome, introductions and overview:
Classroom - registration and introductions.
Virtual Classroom - audio/visual checks and registration.
2 - Legal & Professional Responsibilities:
Overview and discussion.
3 - Anatomy - key points (appropriate to PIVC):
Arteries and veins. Selecting an approprate site. Sites to avoid and “first choice” sites.
4 - Cannulae - selection and types:
A detailed look at different types of cannulas, respective benefits and attributes. Selectinng an appropriate pVAD.
5 - Complications:
Complications of pVAD insertion including examples of
infiltration, haematoma, extravasation and transfixation.
6 - VIP Score:
Understanding and using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis score.
7 - Equipment - overview:
We take a look at all essential equipment required for PIVC.
8 - PRACTICAL SESSIONS:
Multiple practical sessions throughout the session.
9 - Fluids:
The importance of understanding fluids. Includes detailed overview of: maintenance fluids, Hartmann’s solution, Colloids (and risks), blood products.
10 - Infusion Rates:
Calculating infusion rates and drops per minute.

P06A: Practical Session 6A – Performing the venepuncture on the mini-arm trainer. Palpating the vein, performing the venepuncture. Sample handling and labelling.
P06B: Practical Session 6B – Consolidating pre- and post-venepuncture procedures.
