Have you got a quilt top which needs finishing this is the workshop for you.  Janine will be helping you to sandwich your top, wadding and backing. 
Even if you don't have a quilt top ready you can come along and learn how to sandwich and bind as Janine will have lots of small scale samples for you to practice with. 
Once you have your quilting done she will get your binding prepared and help you get the binding cut, pressed and ready to sew on.
Janine has lots of hints and tips to get your binding sewn on with a professional finish.

If you new to sewing or just want some tuition to improve your techniques or learn to read and follow a pattern this is the dressmaking workshop for you!
During the one day workshop we will make an easy fitting tunic top or over the knee length dress using the Tilly and the Buttons &lsquo;Stevie&rsquo; pattern (included in the ticket).&nbsp; Helen&nbsp;will teach you how to choose the right size for you, how to prepare the fabric and pattern to be set up for success.&nbsp; You can choose to create this design as a top or dress.&nbsp;
We have Pfaff sewing machines in the studio for you to use to construct your top or dress. &nbsp; You are welcome to bring your own machine if you prefer. &nbsp;Help is available all day as you create your garment.
We will offer fabric bundles for this workshop which you can buy as an add on to your ticket. Just let me know and I can give you the fabric and notions list if you would prefer to shop for your own.&nbsp;

During the day we will make an easy fitting tunic top or dress using the Tilly and the Buttons &lsquo;Coco&rsquo; pattern (included in the workshop cost).&nbsp; Hannah will teach you how to choose the right size for you, how to prepare the fabric and pattern to be set up for success.&nbsp; You can choose to create this design as either a top or dress with a choice of neckline.
Bring your machine or overlocker - you can borrow a machine from the studio to construct your &nbsp;top or dress. &nbsp; Help is available all day as your create your garment.

Learn to sew with stretch or knit fabrics in this encouraging and supportive workshop! The Tilly and the Buttons ‘Pearl’ pattern is a straightforward make for those who are looking to start or develop skills sewing with jersey and other stretch fabrics.  Pearl can be made using either a sewing machine or an overlocker. 

During the workshop, you will create a comfortable and wrap cardigan with a choice of long straight sleeves, short sleeves or balloon sleeves with cosy cuffs.

A sewing workshop to create an easy fitting wrap cardigan which has a couple of different style options.  Full help is on hand to understand the pattern, cut out and assemble your garment.  

Jersey / Knit wrap cardigan - Pearl by Tilly and the Buttons

Get in the festive mood and create some free motion embroidery pictures which you can then use as patches to adorn your home at Christmas, as cushions, on gift bags or as cards. &nbsp;You will learn or be reminded how to set up your domestic machine for free motion embroidery or drawing with a sewing machine. &nbsp;
Get started with some simple exercises and then practice the technique to develop confidence in free motion stitching.
I have a whole heap of Christmas designs and plenty of fabric scraps to cut your appliqu&eacute; shapes from. &nbsp;Once you have settled on a design you can outline and add detail by drawing with your sewing machine, if you are feeling brave you can also add some text to personalise your Christmas design.&nbsp;
Please note you will need a sewing machine which is capable of dropping the feed dogs and a darning foot - please call or message me if you have any question about your machines capability for free motion stitching.
A cuppa and cake will be available to all participants and materials will also be provided.&nbsp;

Spend a few hours developing your free-motion stitching skills while creating a floral applique design. This is a unique opportunity to try out some of Hannahs new designs before she launches a subscription box with on-line demonstrations and bi monthly kits

Free Motion & Machine Embroidery

A Christmas theme free motion embroidery workshop - drawing on the sewing machine to create Christmas themed appliqué designs. 

Floral Free-Motion Applique

Join us for a day of wet felting at Stitching Kitchen. &nbsp;Using Merino Wool Fibers and a range of other prefect, fibres and open weave fabrics you can create a series of felt samples which can then be used for stitching. &nbsp;&nbsp;We will lay out fibres in colours which will form the initial prefelt. &nbsp;We will select colours using colour theory to create a cohesive pallet for your felt samples. &nbsp;Once the initial prefelt is formed we will then cut into shapes and add various textures, colours and fibres to give the abstract felt pieces interest. &nbsp;You may need to complete some of final felting stages are a later date or at home. &nbsp;Once the tiles are fully felted and dry you can decorate them with stitch, paint. &nbsp;We will spend the last part of the day discussing ideas for decoration and also uses for the samples and how to potentially mount or display them. &nbsp;&nbsp;
What&#39;s included&nbsp;- All materials, tutition, fun, tea and cake
What to bring&nbsp;- a couple of towels for rolling the felt and keeping your hands dry. &nbsp;A packed lunch, we will stop for a rest at the half way point. &nbsp; I stock all the tools and wool roving you will need to continue at home, &nbsp;you may want to bring your purse.&nbsp;

Join us for a day of wet felting at Stitching Kitchen. Using Merino Wool Fibers and a range of other prefect, fibres and open weave fabrics you can create a series of felt samples which can then be used for stitching.

Selecting a colour pallet for your squares based around colour theory
Laying out fibres to create a good quality prefelt 
Cut the prefelt and add additional fibres, textures and shapes
Full at least a couple of squares - you will need to complete your felting process at home
Discussion and planning about embelishments once your felted squares are dry.

Weekend patchwork quilt basics, spread over two weekend this course will cover an introduction to patchwork on the sewing machine.&nbsp;&nbsp;Using a &lsquo;Jelly Roll&rsquo; pack.&nbsp;&nbsp;These are width of fabric two and a half inch strips which are sold in coordinating and complimentary colours to save us having to think too hard about fabric choices.&nbsp;&nbsp;
We will create simple quilt blocks using the strips so the quilt will come together (relatively) quickly.&nbsp; Once the piecing of blocks is done, we will join with sashing, create a quilt sandwich and quilt using the machine. &nbsp; Last but not least we will cover binding. &nbsp;
You will need to bring your own fabrics for this course but we give you help as to where to find your fabrics. &nbsp;On the first session &nbsp;ring along a Jelly Roll and a quarter inch presser foot for your machine or use one of the studio PFAFF machines. &nbsp;Alternatively if you would rather upcycle bring a few items of cotton clothing in your favourite colours which we can cut into 2.5 inch strips.&nbsp;

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR:
This course is suitable for anyone, from those new to textiles, through to experienced makers who want to explore or refresh ways of thinking. You may be a teacher or lecturer looking to recharge your creative batteries, a student who wants to further your current knowledge, or maybe outside of formal education and fancy trying something outside of your usual remit.



WHAT TO EXPECT:
This approach to creativity focuses on a playful and ‘what if’ method of developing ideas for future designs or art directions through drawing. Mark-making, form creation, repetition and colour trials will be used as a basis to explore drawing through patchwork, weaving and hand stitched quilting. While you may choose to develop ideas onto ‘finished’ artefacts, drawings or designs, the series focuses on ideas generation as a part of the whole creative process.
We spend so much time thinking through ideas to completion, often before we even put pen to paper. What might happen if we think through such things while actually engaging in making, playfulness and ‘just doing stuff’ so, that we build an engaging and rich resource of research? Drawing can also be a challenge that brings anxiety, but a free approach to what might constitute drawing can often release those super exciting but unexpected ideas – that frequently never surface when we are rigid in our thinking.

 



WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
While we may have a host of glorious materials and tools available to us, this course will focus on using more every day and accessible materials with extensions suggested as to how ideas may evolve with a broader range of medium etc. In terms of fabrics and threads, it can be with scraps that you have available, old items of clothing or cloth and yarn that has been bought specifically for this.

Join Nicola Perren of Perren Studios for a new set of classes in the Drawing for Textiles series. The 2nd of the series will see us explore and expand our resources in a fun, creative drive to engage with drawing for textiles as part of the design process. 
You do not need to have completed the 1st in the series to join in. You will select a subject matter of your own choosing and we will move off the flat surface of the page to create our own 3d artefacts. These can be used as elements to explore later on paper but more often emerge as observational drawings in themselves.

 



COURSE OVERVIEW:
We often find ourselves drawn to familiar subject matters and as a result, outcomes can start to become predictable. This course will see us not only making our own resources but also consider the act of making 3d resources as a drawing and observational process in itself. We will explore the abstraction of self-selected subject matters in a way that is mindful of a textile practice in order that we can promote outcomes that are unexpected, engaging and playful.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
The focus of this course will be on the creation of 3d artefacts that will be inspired by our own visual references i.e., drawings, photographs, objects. With a playful and experimental approach, we will consider form, scale, texture and line in the development of artefacts made from both soft and hard materials.
Making textiles, is so often about working ‘in space’, whether it is crochet, loom weaving, machine embroidery, tufting or even print making. When we draw on paper in more traditional ways, we can often cut straight to final designs and avoid the expressive, fun and trials that can emerge through drawing. By exploring drawing as a 3d mode, can engage with the more unusual and allow us to explore material properties, movement and the special qualities so often linked to textiles themselves.

This course does make use of a wide range of materials and tools, as with all my teaching, I offer alternatives to what I am doing in the class. You can do this course often with items you may already have around the house / in the garage but equally, you can by items specifically for the course.

PROGRAMME:
Once you have signed up to the full course, you will have access to a full materials list and a video to help you prepare before you join a session, this will include an approach to starting the project i.e., gathering visual references, creating some initial observational drawings [you may already have a project in the past you want to revisit or, want to start with something new]. 
In Series One, we worked with a particular colour story, for this series of classes, it is up to you if you want to use a colour story I provide, create your own or, like me keep colour simple and work with a monotone approach.

PRE-COURSE MATERIALS:

SERIES PROGRAMME:
Session 1] Drawing to Build.
Starting out drawing as form, we will then move on to lift the line off the page and into 3d. Twisting, binding, wrapping, folding and adapting will be key.
Session 2] Organic and Pliable.
Working with malleable materials, we will explore textural qualities and consider the potential of multiples.
Session 3] Geometric Structures.
Being mindful of edges, negative space and construction, we will explore our source subject with relatively hard materials.
Session 4] Soft Form Stitch.
Working with textiles as a material, we will explore the potential of stuffed forms stitch as a drawn observation.

Join Nicola Perren of Perren Studios for a new set of classes in the Drawing for Textiles series. The 3rd of the series will see us explore and expand our approaches to drawing based on a subject matter of your choosing. With an experimental approach to image-making we will explore materials, composition, creating drama and the secretive art of gouache paint. Finally, we will explore hand applique as a direct translation of our drawings and, as a drawing process in itself.



If you have completed the first two of the series, that is great. The 1st one will have connected drawing to textiles very clearly, the 2nd will have given you scope to expand your source materials and inspiration. While I recommend you do these, the 3rd in the series will also work very well on its own.
With a focus on drawing, we will continue to question the properties of textile materials whilst generating a portfolio of drawings suitable for a new design collection and textile developments. Using experimentation, restriction, abstraction, play and sensory observation, we will aim to create a dynamic portfolio of work that reflects a personally chosen colour palette.







COURSE OVERVIEW:
Sometimes, we miss that vital stage between initial drawn studies or notes and the final designing process, the 3rd in this series of Drawing for Textiles will be about exploring drawing and image-making. It will be experimental, playful, engaging and colourful.



WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR:
This course is suitable for anyone, from those new to textiles, through to experienced makers who want to explore or refresh ways of thinking. You may be a teacher or lecturer looking to recharge your creative batteries, a student who wants to further your current knowledge, or maybe outside of formal education and fancy trying something outside of your usual remit.
You may have already completed series 1 or 2, if so, it is great to have you back on board but equally, this course can be completed without having done the previous series.



WHAT TO EXPECT:
The focus of this course will be on the creation of images and drawings that can stand alone in a project’s development and / or be the inspiration for translation into design and textiles. We will explore composition, abstraction and drama with a hint of expressiveness.
Aside from learning about hand stitched applique, you will also learn about stretching paper and how to work with Gouache paints.
You will select a subject matter of your own choosing, if you have done the 2nd in the series – you may want to use your artefacts to draw from. I recommend a format of drawing from a still life for this series and we will discuss how to make your still life dynamic and visually engaging, if you prefer however, you can draw from secondary sources. I will provide colour story options or, you may choose a story of your own. If you can have these items prepped before starting the units, that is helpful – but not a requirement.
This course is taught over 5 units, each unit is presented with a collection of recorded tasks, materials required and a short presentation that introduces the concepts for that unit. With the launch of the course, there will also be the opportunity to join any of the weekly live online evening sessions.
My way of teaching is relaxed, and I am told engaging, so while you will find plenty of opportunities for learning and considering different approaches, it is also enjoyable and can be completed according to your own timescale, energy and needs.




WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
This course does make use of a wide range of materials and tools, as with all my teaching, I offer alternatives to what I am doing in the class. You can do this course often with items you may already have around the house / in the garage but equally, you can by items specifically for the course. 
Below is a list of key items that I will use [in bold] and alternatives you may consider, it is all optional [detailed list will be supplied once you sign up].
I suggest you gather materials that link to your chosen colour story, if you do not have these – do not worry, but it is helpful.
General drawing materials:

Grounds: 
Loose papers – various from scraps to cartridge paper

Paints:
Designer Gouache [Winsor & Newton, Daler Rowney, Schmincke] – NOT acrylic gouache. These paints are not particularly cheap and so my preference is to buy a few selected tubes according to the colours of the current project rather than a selection box with shades I will not use.
Textiles: 
Fabric and a selection of pieces about A4 size suitable for appliqué.
Sewing threads – general haberdashery items.
Fabric glue stick [optional]
A fusible interfacing – I use Floriani Stitch’n’Wash, Tearaway Fusible




PROGRAMME:
Once you have signed up to the full course, you will have access to a full materials list and a video to help you prepare before you join a session, this will include an approach to starting the project i.e., gathering visual references, selecting a colour story, stretching paper. You will have access to all 5 units in this program and there is also access to a few free additional sessions.
PRE-COURSE MATERIALS:
A] Pre-session planning. This video should be watched before you start the course to help you prepare and gather the things you will need. 
SERIES PROGRAMME:
Session 1] Abstracting the Mark.
We will jump straight into image making with a focus on mark-making and consideration of the non-white ground and your chosen colour story.
Session 2] Composing an Image.
Considering our chosen subject matters, we will explore compositions that engage the viewer and are perhaps unexpected.
Session 3] Gouache De-Mystified.
We will learn about designer gouache paint and a few different approaches to its use – all whilst developing our image-making folio.
Session 4] Added Drama.
Working with a range of media, we will add a touch of the theatrical to our drawings – this will be a messy session.
Session 5] Applique as Drawing.
We will learn about hand-based applique methods and will work towards a new image that utilises textiles as the core medium [with a little bit of a drawn materials intervention].
