This workshop focuses on how to make '5S' meaningful to people, and how to link it with company goals. “5S, that’s just all about keeping things organized and tidy, isn’t it? Or maybe you have heard someone say: “Why make a big deal out of cleaning up?” But 5S is not really about the aesthetics of the work place, or even about the efficiency gains you will achieve (typically, 10% to 30% can be easily achieved). The real benefit of 5S is the introduction of standardised operational practices to ensure efficient, ergonomic, repeatable, safe ways of working. This brings many benefits: higher quality, lower costs, reliable deliveries, increased morale, and improved safety … to name but a few. It will also result in a highly visual workplace which contributes to achieving one of the most important results of 5S : making problems immediately obvious. 5S works by helping the team eliminate the seven wastes of lean manufacturing: Waste in Transport, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over-processing, Overproduction, and Defects.It is therefore one of the most powerful Lean Tools, and provides a stable foundation upon which to build all of your other improvement programs, Lean Tools and Practices. It is also one of the simplest to implement, and can be applied within your manufacturing environment, office processes or even within a service industry. 5S is a team approach and requires the participation of everyone within the area in which it is applied to be effective. Structure of the Course This one day course will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the 5S Process and how you can implement it to your organization. It's approach is based on the experienced gained by implementing '5S' in many organizations. It focuses on highlighting what makes '5S' programmes fail, how to engage your personnel in defining and deploying your '5S' strategy, and how to sustain it over time. This workshop looks at '5S' as an integral part of your day to day operational management system, rather than an activity to be managed as a stand alone project. During this two-day workshop, you will learn how to tell a compelling story via photographs. Participants will gain the tools for conceiving of and crafting their own projects, with pointers on how to find ideas, develop your vision, and self-edit. We will cover a broad range of themes, including subject interaction, ethical dimensions, natural light usage and composition. There will also be practical guidance on financing projects, and where to place finished work.Between the two sessions there will be an assignment, intended to provide a practical application of newly acquired skills – this will be reviewed in our second meeting.This workshop is perfect for those with a good understanding of digital photography, seeking to hone their storytelling abilities and push the boundaries of documentary photography.Day 1:– Introduction to photographic storytelling.– Case study of Michael’s work in relation to the practicalities involved with funding, organising and producing a documentary project.– Discussion on the work of inspirational photographers, film makers, and artists.– Consideration of the ethical challenges encountered when producing documentary photography.– Introduction of practical task, and review of images.There will be a practical assignment to be carried out before the 2nd session.Day 2:– Photo story workshop and discussion on style.– Editing: how to select the right pictures to suit narrative objectives.– How to work within time constraints.– Practical task– Portfolio review of work produced during the workshop.– Presentation on opportunities, competitions, and publishing documentary photography projects.   Courses are subject to minimum enrolment. Fused Glass Workshop – Glitzy Glass Jewellery I want to share my 15+ years of experience with you. This fused glass workshop is held at my Derbyshire studio and gallery space in the middle of Wirksworth, near Matlock. About this fused glass workshop Everyone loves sparkle and this workshop is perfect for making wearable art for yourself or to give as give away as gifts. After a brief introduction to how to work safely with glass, I will teach you the technique of cutting and layering sheet glass to produce your own unique creations. The process of cutting is a skill that takes time to develop but wonderful designs can be built from basic shapes. No experience necessary, just an understanding that you might not be “perfect” straight away. I’m told I make it look easy, but I’ve been doing it, almost daily, for 15 years! Produce a range of unique jewellery using specialist glass called Dichroic Glass, a rainbow of colours and a myriad of decorative inclusions, you will design and make jewellery pieces including pendants, earrings, cufflinks and brooches. Your creations will need to be fired, cleaned and finished by Stevie so will be ready in around three weeks. The materials cost will enable you to make at least 3 (maybe 4) pieces in the time, maybe more depending on your chosen designs and how quickly you work.
