Danny Lai is from Taichung, Taiwan. There, he learned many different kinds of martial arts, including Tai Chi, Hsing-Yi, Ba Gua, Tae Kwon Do and Shaolin. Tai Chi Punch Although each style of Tai Chi Chuan has its peculiar features, the five styles of Tai Chi Chuan something in common, they are: With a calm mind the performer breathes naturally. In peace and ease the performer moves lightly, softly, slowly and equally. The performer moves harmoniously and in a balanced way. The performer moves like a circle–graceful and perfect. The motion is slow and steady and strong strength (yang) and weak strength (yin) can be used in motions mutually. Tai Chi Chuan has attracted attention internationally. It has special functions in promoting health and preventing illness. To help the performer to concentrate their mind and to make their motions coordinate with their breath, music can be played to accompany practice. Flow with the sound of the musical instruments. In following the rhythms of the music, practicing Tai Chi Chuan will relieve stress and benefit health. Crescent Kick (Shuang Pai Chiao) The name Tai Chi comes from the Taoist symbol the West calls yin (black) and yang (white). This Tai Chi symbol represents two balanced opposites: black and white, sky and earth, fire and water, masculine and feminine, moon and sun. Feminine is the black or yin. Masculine is light or yang. The yin side of Tai Chi is like yoga, moving meditation, or chi kung. The yang side is the martial art – the practical application of the movements – using your power. Most often the yang side of Tai Chi is not taught. The healing benefits without the martial application is the yin without the yang. Through the movements of Tai Chi, one can set the mind and body in balance. It is not easy to do. You want to make sure that for every movement in motion (yang) or at rest (yin) your body is moving together. Through Tai Chi training, you can learn more about yourself and you can feel calm and peaceful all the time. It is a kind of martial art, but it is a gentle martial art. It is not for attacking, but has powerful self-defense applications.

We run group matwork classes in Westbury Park, and Chew Valley. Our mat courses run in 10 week blocks continuously throughout the year. We cater for all levels and our classes are taught in small groups. Level 1 This Pilates class is suitable for complete beginners or someone who has only attended a few classes. Level 2 This Pilates class is suitable for someone who has done some Pilates and is looking for a bit more of a challenge. Level 3 This is a faster paced Pilates class aimed at someone who has a lot of Pilates experience and is looking for an even greater challenge. Level 4 This is our most advanced Pilates class and particularly suited to someone with good knowledge of all the original Pilates repertoire and also likes a challenging and flowing class. Barre A barre class combines the framework of ballet techniques with Pilates for increased flexibility and strength. It is a fun, energising class which will give you a full body workout. Barre is accessible to everyone and there’s no need to have any previous movement experience. Vinyasa Flow Yoga Vinyasa means linking body movement to breath ‘to place in a special way’. Every class is linked to one of the 4 elements, Earth, Water, Fire & Air corresponding to opening different parts of the physical body to link body, mind and spirit. Hatha Flow Yoga This is an energising and fluid class with an emphasis on holding poses for longer and synchronising movement with breath. All poses are offered in stages starting from beginners to more advanced levels giving students an opportunity to choose the right one for them. The class will finish with regenerating practices and shavasana/deep relaxation pose. Studio Equipment Classes At our Westbury Park studio and Chew Valley studio we have a more personal experience with studio equipment based Pilates. The exercises and intensity are carefully tailored to meet your specific needs and goals. The exercises are performed on a Reformer, Cadillac and split pedal stability chairs. We also work with smaller pieces of equipment such as balls, bands, foam rollers, and Arc Barrels. The Reformer This is the most popular and versatile piece of Pilates equipment. The carriage glides on rails, moving in response to the use of attached springs, pulleys and ropes. The reformer facilitates hundreds of strengthening and stretching exercises. The Cadillac/Trapeze Table This is a raised horizontal table topped by a four- poster canopy frame on which bars, straps and springs are attached. A wide variety of exercises can be performed on the Cadillac. From gentle, spring assisted movement to advanced acrobatics. The Wunda Chair This is a box with 4 springs and a split pedal. The exercises enhance stability, balance and body control. It focuses on upper and lower body strength and conditioning and makes the chair a great tool for improving general fitness. Open Studio Classes At our Westbury Park studio and Chew Valley studio we run Open Studio classes. Our Open Studio classes are taught as circuits that utilise all the Pilates equipment and small props. Over 5 weeks you are invited to practice a variety of moves on each piece of equipment, including The Reformer, The Cadillac and The Wunda Chair. The emphasis is on repeating the same circuit each week for 5 weeks to build your confidence and improve your practice.

Two Day Wood Spoon Carving Workshop

I've added this two day workshop because a one day workshop gives you the basics, but two days will allow you to develop your carving technique and use additional knife grasps.  By embedding good technique into the way you carve, you will avoid injuries and additional regular stretching will help you to look after your body. You will leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home.  You will have access to a range of different tools, starting with the axe to rough out spoon blanks - I have a good range of axes you can try from budget to the Gransfors large carving axe. Next using the Mora wood carving knives (105/106/120) to shape your blanks into spoons following traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. I also have a range of hook knives to try out. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood (usually willow/birch/alder or cherry) - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log, trimming it down with an axe, to carving finer details and decorations with chip carving knives. This course is located close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.  Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden. Courses can also be arranged to suit your availability! Please email to discuss your requirements, discounts are available for small groups or multiple days. Course numbers are usually limited to five or less; individual training courses can also be arranged. What's included in the price? Tea, coffee, light lunch of bread and soup and snacks.
