We will be using the Fleetwood Sundress by Sew Different - an elegant sun dress with an empire line bodice, perfect for festivals and afternoon tea alike! It has integrated straps and a full panelled skirt with top-trimmed pockets in the side panels. It also has two length options mini or midi!

What to bring
A packed lunch as we will break for 30 minutes for lunch.

You will need up to 3.5 m of fabric, 0.75m of iron on interfacing, 18cm zip and matching thread.  You can buy a discounted fabric bundle from Stitching Kitchen, fabric options are to be found along side the pictures above. 

Please note that this workshop is held in our light and spacious first floor studio at Stitching Kitchen, which is accessible by stairs. 

Although we hope you will complete your garment on the day it will depend on how many adjustments you make to your basic pattern and the rate at which you work. 




About your tutor
Emma Smith studied Textiles at University and worked in child wear design. She has a teaching and training qualification and teaches at various sewing studios across the UK including the Sew Different retreats.  She lives in Leicestershire with her husband and mischievous cat.

Once accepted onto the course, you should contact Philip Hodge prior to the start of the course to discuss the actual pieces that you would like to restore. This is not an upholstery course and although simple upholstery tasks may be possible, they do not really come within the remit of this course.

All projects will be discussed as a group &amp; students will learn new skills and techniques such as French Polishing, veneering, and blending repairs, from both their own and other students` pieces as well as tutor demonstrations. As a group we will discuss the problems thrown up by each project. Following expert advice and help from the tutor, each student will then work towards getting their two projects to a finish by the end of the week. While no guarantee can be given that projects will be finished within the week, if they are not over ambitious it should be infinitely possible.

You will learn new skills and techniques both from your own and other people`s projects. The actual details of this will vary according to what repairs are necessary on the pieces brought to the course. However, it would be usual for it to include woodworking repairs, veneer repairs, French polishing, and the blending of repairs. If you are looking to learn particular skills then it is important that you choose projects that would incorporate those elements of restoration.The reason for you having 2 projects on the go is that there may be times when one of the projects is untouchable because of drying glue, polish, etc. So, to save standing around, you will be able to work on your other project.

Nicky's aim is to show how easily accessible surface textiles techniques can be for every level of student and how it can be delivered in a fun and engaging way.

Marbling is great way of introducing a quick and easy surface technique if you have little to no prior experience. Especially good for students who will get immediate exciting and inspiring results.!
A beginner friendly workshop to produce great artwork for textile projects.

tray of cold water (min 5cm deep)
oil paint 2 colours
white spirit
glass jar and brush to mix/have a cloth for spills and a table cover

This qualification is designed for learners aged pre-16 and above who wish to develop skills and knowledge in creative craft.

This course has been designed to be as affordable for families as possible.
Please note, this is not a GCSE but is a GCSE Level course which is why it is designed to span 2 years, although we offer complete flexibility on the timeframe that learners can complete within.
This qualification is a Level 2 Qualification and is Ofqual approved carrying 15 credits. Other examples of Level 2 qualifications are BTEC Level 2 and the Silver Arts Award. Feedback from our past learners shows that this qualiifcation is widely regarded as level to a grade A*-C/4-9 at GCSE standard when applying for college or work placements.
Please also note, that whether this course is recognised as a GCSE equivalent by colleges and further education establishments, can vary according to location, college and even between courses at the same college. If reliant on this qualification for entry onto another course, it is recommended that you establish with the college whether or not this will aid admission, before committing to the course.

We don't impose any minimum or maximum ages on our learners as we recognise that every learner is an individual and is on their own unique learning journey. We believe, that their adult facilitator is the best person to judge whether a learner is ready for a particular course, but to enable you to make this decision we provide a workbook, free for you to try.
