Alien spoons? Well, only because it is a memorable name and some of the knife grasps feel a bit alien to start with. You will soon get to grips with them and the focus of this workshop is learning to use safe and efficient carving techniques with hand tools - the axe, straight knives and hook knives... maybe also a drawknife on a shave horse. By following good technique you will avoid injuries and with regular stretching this will help you to look after your body as well as the tools. You should leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home. The tools are relatively cheap and easy to use in a small space. You will have access to a range of tools, but primarily use the Mora wood carving knives (106/120/164s) and be shown traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log with a froe or axe, trimming this down with an axe, and on to carving finer details and decorations with knives. Additional skills in building a shave horse and other green wood working can also be taught. This course is run from close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.  Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden. In the workshop you will also find soldering equipment on each bench, a wide range of professional stone setting tools for various stone setting styles, a wide range of hand tools, texturing tools, a rolling mill, a hydraulic press, polishing equipment, dapping tools and punches, all of which will allow you the chance to create your designs within a professional setting. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: You must be enrolled on our term time class or summer term or have experience. CLASS SIZE: 7 WHAT IS INCLUDED? Create your very own silver chain bracelet during this day workshop. We will guide you through all the processes involved in creating your own design. From cutting, shaping and texturing the silver, through to soldering and polishing. You will create each link and a T bar clasp. This is a fantastic project to help you learn or improve your soldering skills, and a great introduction to jewellery making. WHEN: Saturday 16th November 10-5pm WHERE:  Workshop 925 based at The Mayford Centre, just outside of Woking and very close to Guildford. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: None, all abilities are welcomed. We support you throughout the session and provide demonstrations to show you the techniques and steps needed to create your own chain bracelet from start to finish. Our small classes mean we are able to provide each student with the support they require. Students must be 16+ Students aged 14 or 15 are able to attend if accompanied by an adult. You will learn how to size bangles, how to solder, texture the metal, cut out a charm, and also polish your designs. You will be provided with all the silver required to make two stacking bangles and a charm to accompany them. This is an excellent starting project for a beginner. For those with more experience, it is an opportunity to develop your skills further. A full day class where you'll create a couple of pieces of jewellery from silver clay. You'll learn various different techniques and to start your silver clay journey.

Learn an ancient technique, used by the Romans. It is very low tech and wonderful items of jewellery with a professional finish can be produced in a few hours. Students make moulds in plaster or cuttlefish to their own designs, then lead free pewter is poured into the moulds using hand gravity casting. The moulds can be reused to make pendants, earrings, brooches, keyrings and fridge magnets.
