About Council For Learning Outside The Classroom

Incorporated in December 2008, the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom formally assumed responsibility and leadership for learning outside the classroom from the [then] Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) on the 1st April 2009. The premise of LOtC has been supported by many individuals and organisations over the years. The launch of the LOtC Manifesto by the then Secretary of State in November 2006 marked a significant step forward in recognising and promoting the benefits of LOtC in young people’s educational attainment and social, emotional and personal development. The ‘Out and About Package’ was launched in 2008 to support learning outside the classroom through: The LOtC website which provides information, advice and guidance designed to help schools, educational practitioners and others working with young people to plan, run and evaluate exciting and challenging LOtC activities. The LOtC Quality Badge. This is a national accreditation recognising organisations that provide good quality educational experiences and manage risk effectively. Supported by the majority of Local Authority Outdoor Education Advisers, the LOtC Quality Badge makes it easier for anyone organising educational visits to gain approval and provides assurance that their chosen destination has met 6 nationally recognised quality
