Welcome to SEND Teaching School. We are a partnership between West Hill and Linden Bridge Teaching Schools and work with an alliance of special schools and short-stay schools in Surrey, covering all phases and sectors of special educational needs. We provide a range of services to support SEND teaching and learning, including SEND specific school-to-school support and a wide range of SEND training and professional development opportunities for staff and school leaders. We provide SEND training packages for both primary and secondary Initial Teacher Training and Leadership programmes, in line with the ‘Big 6’ Teaching School aims as defined by the National College. In addition, we also provide SEND support for parents and organisations.

We share the frustrations of many teachers, support staff, parents and other professionals about the limitations and lack of practical, affordable and effective support for children with SEND. Our experience of working for over 30 years with schools have made us determined and well equipped to provide excellent help and support. In 2020, in the midst of a global crisis, three independently minded professionals had a similar idea. Schools were closed, educational projects on hold, travel banned and many professionals and parents at home for longer periods of time. Was now the time to put their collective wisdom together and do something innovative? Was there an appetite for good quality training for teachers and support for parents that was really affordable? Three sole traders decided it was worth a go and over the past year have been independently developing materials and constructing the organisation to launch SEND Station - a one stop destination for those wanting accessible, affordable, practical support for their work and support with children with SEND.

Supporting schools by providing SEND solutions throughout Yorkshire. We are passionate about supporting schools to provide high quality inclusive teaching for all learners and specialised intervention for learners with SEND. We know that inclusivity and provision for vulnerable groups is one of your priorities, but standard teacher training in SEND, and SEND central services are known to be limited in our area.

Before The SEND Lady, there was a huge gap in support for Children, Young People & their Families with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. I have worked across Education & Social Care for approximately 10 years, during which time I have developed my own Knowledge & Experience to be able to create a range of detailed courses and packages, aimed to offer an in depth understanding into the World of SEND. Understanding the impact having a Child with complex needs can often be overlooked and difficult to relate to; their daily challenges have long standing effects on the Child, their parents and of course, any siblings. Sometimes as professionals, we underestimate our ability to make real, effective change in the life of these Children - to really understand the needs of the individual and be as inclusive as we can. But how can we do that? This is where The SEND Lady can help. My aim is to improve outcomes for Children & Families with SEND through Education and Specialised School Improvement Packages. I offer bespoke, hands-on support to equip professionals with the confidence and skills to become knowledgable SEND practitioners with a passion for removing barriers to learning and development for our Children. Our mission is to reduce isolation, stress and anxiety for people living with SEND through our activities in the community. We encourage inclusion and social equality, giving the opportunity for friendships to be formed. We aim to address any gaps that we see in society.

Maree and Charlotte have known each other in a professional capacity for over ten years and are keen to improve the provision for children and young people with SEND by supporting staff within education, health and social care. They are also keen to support parents and carers to navigate SEND processes to enable them to achieve the best possible outcomes for their children. Maree Thorn Maree filter Maree is an experienced teacher and SENCo who has worked in a wide variety of educational settings, including early years, primary, secondary, mainstream and special schools. She is currently commissioned by Bedford Borough Council as a SEND Teaching and Learning Advisor to support and advise local primary schools on their strategic SEND provision. She also provides specialist teaching for children and young people who cannot attend school for a variety of reasons, such as medical needs or school based anxiety. She has a Bachelor’s degree in primary education, Qualified Teacher Status, a Postgraduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs Coordination and has gained the National Award for SEN Co-ordination. She has previous experience of being a school governor, and is currently a trustee for a local charity foundation, sitting on the board of school governors and fostering committee. Maree has experience of supporting senior leaders to review their SEND processes and identify areas in need of improvement within their settings; mentoring and coaching staff to improve their individual practices; and supporting governors and trustees to understand school requirements and their responsibilities. Maree has a diagnosis of ADHD and so fully understands the challenges that people who are neurodivergent can experience. With a family history of special needs, she has long had an interest in ensuring children with SEND are able to achieve their own individual outcomes and giving them the best opportunities for a full and rich life.
