A ride-on roller (ROR), also called a road roller, is a machine used in construction to flatten and compact surfaces like soil, asphalt, and gravel. It has large drums that roll over the ground, pressing materials together to make them smooth and solid. These machines are commonly used in road building, foundation work, and landscaping to make surfaces stable and strong before more work is done.
Course objectives
Operators should first have a basic understanding of the construction industry, including the risks involved and their responsibilities. This foundational knowledge helps them stay aware of potential dangers and, importantly, ensures they follow proper safety protocols.
In addition to this, a solid understanding of the manufacturer's handbook for the machine they are using is essential. Operators must be able to locate and identify the main components of the machine and understand their functions. Furthermore, they should be able to find and explain the key controls necessary for safe operation.
Before starting the machine, operators must, as a key step, perform pre-operational checks in line with the manufacturer's guidelines and legal requirements. Along with this, they must ensure they are wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) required for operating the roller.
Once everything is set, operators should then prepare the roller and operate it safely and efficiently. This not only includes conducting all necessary safety checks in the work area but also being mindful of environmental considerations. Furthermore, understanding the correct procedures for loading and unloading the machine for transport is equally crucial.
Finally, at the end of each shift, operators must follow all shutdown procedures to ensure the machine is safely secured. This step ensures that the equipment remains in good condition for future use and helps prevent accidents or damage.

Description
The CILT(UK) Level 5 Professional Diploma in Logistics and Transport (QCF) is designed to enhance new and existing expertise in the supply chain, passenger transport, road freight or transport planning environments as well as developing core management skills.
To achieve this qualification Learners must complete four units. Completion of the Mandatory Management unit and one elective unit is compulsory and Learners must take two other units. The elective unit chosen will determine the affinity of the qualification in terms of Supply Chain or Transport Operations. The two additional units can be any of the range of options or electives including Warehousing, Inventory, Movement of Goods and Movement of People.
The mandatory Management in Logistics and Transport unit presents the fundamental management knowledge required for managers in the logistics and transport industry. It covers aspects of the internal and external structures of organisations, the governance of the people within organisations and those financial and other planning techniques necessary to maintain organisational health. It aims to deliver the understanding and competence of those key elements of management practice that are fundamental to both commercial and non-commercial organisations.
The choice of elective and optional units is a matter of choice - we have a wealth of experience in this industry and would be very happy to help you to make the best choice for your aspirations. The choice of units does not have to made at enrolment but can be discussed whilst working on the Management unit.
Who is this course for?
The CILT(UK) Level 5 Professional Diploma in Logistics and Transport is designed for professionals already working within the logistics and transport sectors. It is most suited to those who are aspiring to middle management positions in specialist functional areas such as supply chain management or transport operations.
Requirements
We recommend learners have some prior knowledge of the logistics and transport industry and a previous level 3 qualification or equivalent experience. We are happy to discuss this with you and advise accordingly.
A good standard of written English is required for this course - GCSE grade A-C.
