Our CET structure is not rigid but rather adaptable to the dynamic situations trainers often find themselves in, especially when time is tight. We discuss why question techniques are an incredibly powerful tool in the art of engaging our learners, and we look at when we should use specific techniques and even when we should not. We give time to practice this key skill, but please note that the three-day course has limited time for this crucial practice. The three-day version of this course is designed exclusively for experienced trainers, recognising their expertise and the experience they have acquired. Including inexperienced trainers is unfair to them or others on their course.
A comprehensive course manual (100+ pages) is supplied and used throughout the course to ensure attendees can find their way around and ask questions as they wish.

The three-day course is split into two parts. The first two days are together, then the third day a week (or more) later. This gives attendees time to plan, prepare and practice before delivering their final recorded sessions.

Course Overview
The Level 2 Diploma in Highways Maintenance -Excavation Operations qualification has been developed for achievement in a training environment which means you do not need to be employed to undertake this qualification.

This qualification enables you, the learner, to demonstrate and recognise your skills, knowledge and understanding so you can progress onto further training at level 3 or on successfully completion of the level 2 progress into a job role in the workplace.

This qualification enables you, the learner, to demonstrate and recognise your skills, knowledge and understanding so you can work as a Highways Maintenance Operative within the construction industry.

You will be assessed against a set of performance and knowledge statements which have been derived from National Occupational Standards for your occupational area. You will be trained and assessed by an occupationally competent and qualified trainer whose job is to help you complete your qualification.

This qualification supports the learner to attain enabling, fundamental and transferable practical skills with associated underpinning knowledge.

This qualification is graded.

This qualification can be taken as part of an apprenticeship framework, if desired. This qualification sits within the Construction Apprenticeship Framework in England and Wales.

This can be taken alongside the following qualifications in contribution towards achievement of a Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Construction Civil Engineering -Highways Maintenance:

One afternoon, we were enjoying a day out in the sunshine and had stopped to feed our daughter of 7 months, she’s just started solid food and we’d been giving her sliced banana to chew on. On this particular day, she inhaled a small piece and began to choke. I quickly remembered Martin’s words, put her in the proper hold, bottom in the air and one forceful strike between her shoulder blades dislodged the banana and although she was shocked, she was able to breathe again and I can’t tell you how relieved we felt! LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION

Daisy Chandley joined PFD in 2019 after graduating from the University of Oxford with a BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. She is an Associate Agent and assistant to Senior Agent Annabel Merullo and Head of Books Tim Bates as the UK sub-agent for New Directions Publishing in the US. Daisy is actively building a list of both fiction and non-fiction authors across a range of genres.

With fiction, Daisy's wishlist roughly falls into three categories – if something feels like it overlaps between them, even better!

1) Sharp, original novels on the literary to upmarket spectrum, all the way from deeply dark and boundary-pushing books like Hurricane Season, Under The Skin or In The Cut to those balancing edge, heart and humour, like Detransition, Baby or A Visit From The Goon Squad. She loves irreverent wit, daring approaches in narrative or form, and seriously unsettling stories in equal measure, and if you can bring a few of those elements into one, it’ll go straight to the top of her.

2) Com-heavy rom-coms, whether in the dry but ultimately sob-inducing vein of Greta and Valdin or a Nora Ephron film, the escapist screwball delight of a Cary Grant classic, or the more unusual, genre-bending style of something like Palm Springs. Daisy is a sucker for Emily Henry and will always be happy to see an innovative take on tropey love stories, but is equally very keen to see to things a bit outside of the box, whether that’s integrating speculative elements, dark humour, or topical issues. In any case, humour and originality are my priority, and affectionately snarky bickering is the best way to make her fall head over heels with a couple.

3) Sleuths! Daisy is not the right person for police procedurals, but loves classic detectives and amateur sleuths. Whether it’s a delightful Knives Out or Nancy Drew homage or an intricate, unputdownable mystery on the darker side, the minute someone finds a good old fashioned clue, count her in!

Overall, whether it’s a delightfully fun and scandalous page-turner or something really bold and experimental, if it’s stylish and smart – and maybe even a bit sexy – Daisy would love to see it.

Daisy is definitely interested in literary speculative fiction, though not generally looking for hard SFF. Across the board, she is always looking for stories that explore sexuality, race, gender, and disability, and would particularly love to hear from writers whose voices and experiences aren’t given enough space in publishing.

On the non-fiction side, Daisy is looking for bold new insights and underrepresented voices on popular science, nature writing, relationships, social issues and politics, and am always especially interested in fresh, playful and exciting writing on pop culture, love and the internet. She’d also love to see illuminating narrative non-fiction, whether a beautiful and lyrical exploration, or an enthralling and explosive deep-dive.

If you have already undertaken some training in Motivational Interviewing (at least half a day)*, you are welcome to join our MI Skills Club (MISC), which is a free community group for Educational Psychologists wishing to practise their MI skills within a small and friendly group.


Because MI is a conversational style, rather than a discrete skill, it is not something that can be mastered by attending a one-off training session. While MI is a learnable approach, it takes practice, reflection and supervision to improve. Learning MI on your own is hard, and receiving objective feedback and expert feedback are helpful in developing and maintaining competence in MI (Miller & Rollnick, 2023).


Cathy Atkinson and Fi Coley, who are both members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), are collaborating to build an MI Learning Community for EPs. MINT (2019) defines a learning community as a network of practitioners interested in the same topic, and the community can serve as both a resource and a forum for developing practice.


In each 90-minute online session we will focus on one small aspect of MI (micro-skills practice) and use breakout rooms with small groups to practice skills and give /receive supportive feedback.


This event is open to Educational Psychologists, Trainee Educational Psychologists, and Assistant Psychologists. We are unable to accommodate aspiring EPs at this event.
