In this one-day, beginners&#39; workshop with artist Panna Chauhan, you will study both the italic and foundational scripts, and learn how to use these in unique and abstract ways to create a framed calligraphy artwork ready to hang at home.The foundational and italic scripts are different in the way they are written, and because of the way the pen is held, and each has a unique look and style.Under Panna&#39;s watchful eye, you will spend the morning learning and practicing letter forms in the basic foundational hand (or script): learning about the different types of nibs; correct sizing of letters; and how to hold the pen with the right tension to achieve a fluid letter.After a break for lunch, you will study the italic hand in brief before moving on to combining both these scripts to create an abstract calligraphy artwork. &nbsp;Panna will provide you with a calligraphy pack, including practice sheets, to use on the day which you can take home with you. The Arienas Collective workshops, courses and events are run from a supportive and welcoming home-based environment within a Georgian mews home in Edinburgh&rsquo;s City Centre New Town. We invite you to join us, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in being creative.
Spaces on our workshops and courses are limited so that our creative team of artists and makers can offer you the hands-on help and support you need to make the most of your time with us.&nbsp;
All the equipment and materials you will need are included in the price, unless stated otherwise, plus light refreshments (a selection of Shibui teas, coffee, hot chocolate, and sweet or savoury snacks). On full day workshops you are welcome to bring your own lunch to eat inside or out; or there are a wide range of independent sit-in or takeaway delis, caf&eacute;s, and restaurants, plus supermarkets, within a 5-10 minute walk.
PLEASE NOTE: Our workshop space is on the first-floor of a Georgian mews building and unfortunately we do not have lift access. The workshop space is in our home which is&nbsp;not&nbsp;nut free. Please let us know of any skin or food allergies before booking.
Private workshop bookings
Most of our workshops are also available to book for small private get-togethers; themed wedding and birthday celebrations; corporate team building and well-being purposes; and as in-store retail events. We do our very best to avoid cancellations. Since we often get late bookings, we keep our workshops on sale for as long as possible. If you have ever wanted to explore sketchbook journalling, this exclusive new workshop with the Edinburgh Sketcher is the perfect place to start.
On this 3.5 hour workshop, artist Mark Kirkham - known locally as the Edinburgh Sketcher - will show you how to capture what you see quickly and lift your sketches off the page using a little watercolour, and share why sketchbook journalling has become such an important part of his day-to-day life.
You will explore how words can be used as decoration, and add depth to your drawing. 
Sketching items from still life, you will learn how to choose what to include; and how to link your sketches together using colour and composition. 
Starting with a new sketchbook, Mark will help you overcome any fears you have of facing the blank page, and build your confidence with mark making. 
Using the tips and techniques you learn on the day, you will leave ready to continue your sketchbook journalling at home.
This workshop will be held indoors in our welcoming and supportive environment in Edinburgh's City Centre New Town.

NVQ Level 2 Plant Maintenance - on site assessment - we come to you

ProQual NVQ Level 2 Diploma - Plant Maintenance

Create two unique hallmark quality silver rings on this intermediate level workshop with Edinburgh-based silver clay jewellery expert Anna Campbell.
Using silver clay, a material made up of recycled silver particles, an organic binder and water, you will learn how to make two different types of fine silver rings. Anna will take you through all the steps needed to create your own pieces ready for firing.&nbsp;
You will complete two projects: a flat band ring, and a D profile ring (as shown in the photographs). You will learn how to design your rings, calculate your size to take shrinkage into account, make your own bespoke pieces and embellish with textures and a gemstone. If you want to make a ring for someone else please remember to check their ring size before coming!&nbsp;
Your rings will be taken away for kiln firing at the end of the session and will be posted to you within one week (It is recommended that rings are kiln fired rather than torch fired). Alternatively, your rings can be collected from The Arienas Collective by arrangement.
This workshop is suitable for those that have completed our half day silver clay taster or full day beginners workshops, or have some experience of working with silver clay. If you are unsure about whether it&rsquo;s suitable for you, please contact us before booking.

Create your own silver rings: a full-day jewellery workshop.
You’ll be guided by Anna Campbell, one of the UK’s leading metal clay instructors, in this inspiring one-day workshop. Designed for those who have completed a beginner’s course or have some experience working with metal clay, this intermediate-level class will take your jewellery-making skills to the next level. 
Over the course of the day, you’ll craft two beautiful silver rings, each showcasing different techniques. This hands-on workshop will provide you with expert guidance as you explore new ways to create and refine your designs in silver clay.
Here’s what you’ll create and learn:
Flat band ring. Start by making a classic flat band ring, which is sleek and flat all the way around. This project will introduce you to essential ring-making techniques, including how to size your ring for a perfect fit and work with silver clay to shape and refine your design. You will be able to texture and embellish this ring to make it unique to you.
D Profile ring. Next, you’ll craft a D profile ring - a design that is flat on the inside and elegantly rounded on the outside. This sophisticated style will allow you to explore more advanced techniques and develop your skills in shaping and finishing.

Our taster and introductory workshops focus on teaching creative skills and methods you can continue practising at home, using affordable materials and equipment. Where more expensive equipment is required we will mention this in the workshop description.

Minimum number no refund policy
To ensure we can always pay our creatives a fair fee, we require a minimum number of bookings for each workshop and for this reason bookings are non-refundable. Should we have to cancel due to low numbers, we will offer you the option to swap to an alternative date or workshop, or to request a refund.
We do our very best to avoid cancellations. Since we often get late bookings, we keep our workshops on sale for as long as possible. We realise that some of you travel from afar, so if you book a space and have not yet received an email confirming your workshop is going ahead and need to make plans for your trip, please get in touch before booking any travel or accommodation so we can update you on booking numbers. While we&rsquo;re often told not to linger on the past, it can be difficult to move on in life without a clear sense of where we&rsquo;ve come from. Like driving, we still need to look in the rear-view mirror to manoeuvre mindfully and journey forward.
People have been writing about their own lives for centuries. The process of writing reflectively encourages us to explore important memories, often unearthing forgotten moments, and to consider how we&rsquo;ve grown and developed since then. Creating a written piece can be a way of &lsquo;clearing the shelves&rsquo; in our minds and, like all writing, bring a sense of accomplishment.
This workshop is a dedicated space to reflect on an important memory or experience in your life, consider how it has impacted you, and use creative writing skills to begin developing a piece of reflective, autobiographical writing. We will also finish the workshop with some mindfulness through writing. The class is suitable for anyone who wants to develop their writing skills or dedicate time to exploring a significant past experience. No writing experience is necessary!

Matthew studied English Literature at the University of Glasgow and has been teaching English in schools and to foreign language students for fifteen years. He writes novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction, and has spoken at various book launches, festivals, and writing groups including the Cymera Festival, The Nottingham Writers&rsquo; Studio, Writing East Midlands, and Poetry LGBT. He won the National Trust for Scotland's Morton Writing Competition in 2019 and recently won the Strathkelvin Writers' Group poetry competition. Matthew is also a qualified Reiki II healer and a keen Ashtanga yoga practitioner with a fascination for tarot, meditation and crystal healing.

Quarterly meetings at the Academy
To ensure a well-rounded learning experience, you will be required to attend face-to-face lessons at the Academy on a quarterly basis, which means every three months. These sessions serve several important purposes:

Practical Units: Some aspects of the course require hands-on practical training. The face-to-face lessons will cover these practical units, allowing you to gain valuable experience and apply the knowledge you have acquired during the virtual learning sessions.

This is a paid job, unless you would like to work voluntary for personal reasons. We also provide a reference letter to the employee in case you need it.

There are two exams:
1. Multiple choice theory exam. November and March.

Record of Experience (eROE)
To be eligible to sit your first exam, you have to complete your electronic Record of Experience (eROE). The eROE has to be submitted to your tutor by 31st Jan for March exam, and 31st August for November exam.

Join us for this one-day online course and discover what makes quality teaching of history by exploring how to ensure coverage of the National Curriculum through practical creative methods, which will engage children in interactive methods which can be adopted and adapted for different age groups or themes, whilst ensuring progression and challenge for all. We will look at how to develop enquiry and secure a deep understanding of historical knowledge. There will be suggestions to encourage children to ask perceptive, historically valid questions, make careful observations and understand how historians use a range of sources of evidence in order to construct their interpretations of the past, as part of the recent focus on the development of disciplinary knowledge.
