Our small sixth form ensures that all of our pupils’ individual needs are catered for which in turn ensures we are well placed to help each individual to make their expected progress. Supported by a strong careers programme, our pupils continue to be successful in their transition from school to employment, apprenticeships and further education and training. Pupils receive individual guidance on their next steps and we are proud to say that our school leaver statistics are above the national average with close to 100% of our pupils selecting appropriate future steps. St John Henry Newman Catholic School seeks to provide a distinctly Catholic education in partnership with parents, families, the local Church and wider community. Mutual respect is at the heart of our school community and Gospel values of peace, justice and reconciliation are of paramount importance. At St John Henry Newman Catholic School we pride ourselves on the level of pastoral care our pupils are offered. Each pupil is known to us and we are able to identify and react quickly when problems arise to help our pupils in every way possible to achieve their full potential. We are renowned for going the extra mile and offering first class levels of support. Each Year group has a dedicated Head of Year who works with pupils from their first day in Year 7 until they finish Year 11. A Pupil Support Officer is also available throughout the day providing advice and guidance. It is a difficult decision to select a secondary school for your child. One of the most important things you should do is visit the school during the school day. This will allow you to get a feel for the school and to see our pupils at work. We would be delighted to arrange a visit for you at a time convenient time to yourself. Please contact our school office to arrange a visit. We have excellent facilities set in pleasant surroundings. Pupils will experience practical subjects using up to date technology in purpose-built environments. ICT facilities are constantly being updated and pupils have the opportunity to access resources both in and outside school using our virtual learning environment.

I am delighted to welcome you to Central Academy, which is part of United Learning Trust. The United Learning motto is ‘The Best in Everyone’, and we wholeheartedly subscribe to this philosophy. Here at Central Academy, we are committed to providing an outstanding learning experience through our broad and balanced curriculum. Our curriculum is far more than just a range of subjects, in its broadest sense it provides a full rounded education for all students, with excellent enrichment opportunities that broaden horizons and create lifelong memories for our students. “The curriculum supports pupils’ personal and academic development” Ofsted 2017 In recent years we have been really impressed with how our students have performed. Most recently in Summer 2021 with our students receiving some excellent GCSE and A-level results and a large number of Russel Group offers for our Year 13’s going to university. Education is much broader than what happens in the classroom, and we celebrate this as a school through our “Education with Character” program. This program focuses on education beyond the classroom, from extra-curricular opportunities to working with the Manchester United and Carlisle United Foundation. Our Education with Character program is underpinned by our core values; Respect, Ambition, Determination, Confidence, Creativity and Enthusiasm. We have something for anyone and everyone here at Central to ensure all students can succeed in the future. We are a caring and inclusive school community who want the best for all our young people. I am excited to have such a strong body of staff here at Central Academy and really proud of the pastoral support we provide for our students. “Pupils’ personal development and welfare are good. They are well cared for.” Ofsted 2017 We pride ourselves on high expectations for all students with our main focus being on learning. Therefore, all students at Central have the right to disruption free learning. As a school we pride ourselves on this simple expectation, therefore the behaviour system is simple, easy to apply and allows staff to focus on teaching excellent lessons. Here at Central we look to strive for excellence in everything we do, never settling for just ‘good enough’. As Principal, my standard is simple “the experience we provide our students’ must be equal to the experience expected for our own children”, if this isn’t the case we must adapt and develop a better experience for our students. As a parent, I understand the importance of the choice of your child’s secondary school. At Central we provide a unique transition experience from personalised tours of our school to the transition summer school for all of our new Year 7 students. Nothing is too much to ask, therefore if you have any questions, please email the school at info@rrca.org.uk. As Principal, I operate an open-door policy and welcome anyone to contact me directly with any concerns and I will always work with my staff to find positive solutions. I hope you find the information on our website useful and would like to welcome you to our great school. Dan Markham Principal

Equality workshops for staff and governors

By Centre For Studies On Inclusive Education

We will come to your school at a time that suits you and run a 2-hour workshop for all staff. We will present in clear and simple terms the school’s duties under the Equality Act, help you guard against discrimination, and leave you with useful resources. How will this workshop help your school? This is a practical, "hands on" workshop designed to be engaging and constructive. Over and above helping your school fulfil its legal duties, it will help ensure that nobody is left behind or discriminated against. The workshop will show how all protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010 can be reflected positively in everyday school life. It will consider real-life examples and make this more meaningful and relevant by inviting participants to bring their own examples of equality challenges in school. We will show you how to get the best out of CSIE’s toolkit ‘Equality: Making It Happen’ – a succinct and user-friendly set of reference cards to help schools promote equality – and leave you with at least two complimentary copies. Above all, the workshop will help develop a shared understanding and build a consistent response to diversity and equality. We understand that all schools are at different stages of this journey, so this workshop will assist you in determining next steps and areas of specific focus for your setting. What will the workshop cover? The workshop will: provide an overview of the Equality Act 2010, including the Public Sector Equality Duty and what it means for all schools bring awareness to unconscious bias and how it can influence our interactions present strategies for removing barriers to learning and participation address intersectionality and how it affects people’s experiences help develop confidence and language for discussing sensitive equality issues add flesh to the bones of all the above, by considering real-life examples Who is it for?
