Our approved instructors are all experienced frontline engineers on the aircraft types they teach. We now have A330 all engines type approval. Launchpad is a day service which offers adults with learning disabilities the opportunity to develop employment, social and independent living skills within a safe and supported environment. It was set up in August 2017 and currently supports over 20 adults in both catering and horticulture. Trainees are encouraged to set their own goals, and are supported by staff and volunteers in the achievement of those goals. Progress and achievement are recorded in interactive 'CVs' made up of written material, photos and videos. If a trainee wishes to progress into employment, the Launchpad team will support them in every way possible, including liaising with potential employers, help to apply for a job, prepare for and attend an interview and support in starting work.

My pieces are formed intuitively and often with abstract representation. Elements of the local coast, wild estuary and working port often emerge, in particular the ever changing silvery estuary tide and rugged textures of the surrounding natural landscapes. Remembered fragments of my wandering travels, my playful inner child and a career working therapeutically with people are also key influences, often seen reflected in characters, metaphor and suggested emotion. I hand-build from slabbed and coiled clay, mostly white or black stoneware, fired to high temperatures. I often leave sections unglazed, or decorate with matte tactile finishes. I'm also licensed to hand-dig and process a limited amount of local wild clay which I use as a slip, a glaze addition and as a clay body on smaller items. I love working with this iron-rich red clay, very locally sourced, being harvested less than 100 metres from my studio!

At STAR Exeter, teaching is based on communicative principles. Teachers take account of students’ backgrounds, needs, learning styles, strengths and weaknesses. A variety of approaches are employed, ranging from more formal structured activities to freer task-based exercises. A big proportion of class time is devoted to genuine communication. Students are valued for the knowledge and experience they bring, and are encouraged to share this with each other, supported by the teacher. We find this is the key to building students’ confidence in communicating in English. Morning classes follow a recognised course book of the appropriate level. Supplementary materials are taken from a wide variety of sources, including authentic listening texts, newspapers and videos, so that each student’s interests and needs are catered for. Skills work is also an important part of the curriculum, giving students a balance between learning grammar and vocabulary, and practising the skills of listening, speaking (including pronunciation), reading and writing. Independent learning is encouraged, and students are given advice on how to continue their learning at home, when they are out and about in Exeter, and when they return to their own country. Homework is set regularly, checked by the teacher and remedial work is given if necessary. Each student has an Individual Learning Plan. Through weekly tutorials, the student is guided in the areas he/she needs to focus on, and the teacher can adjust the syllabus according to individual interests and requirements. Afternoon Academic Skills classes The afternoon lessons complement the morning General English course by providing an opportunity for students to activate their language, with output, rather than input, being emphasized. The syllabus is therefore topic-based, focussing on real-life communication and transactional English. Students have a direct input in the choice of topics for the afternoon lessons. We have a wide variety of specialised material at all levels, which teachers use to build lessons around. Vocabulary exercises, reading texts, and listenings are used as springboards for further work. Errors are corrected as students speak, and teachers often highlight areas of difficulty, in order for more in-depth practice. Afternoon classes are also ideal for focussing on pronunciation. IELTS Exam Preparation classes Students work to gain competence in all four study skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing) to obtain the result/score they need. Students develop strategies to carry out IELTS tasks in class and be prepared for the exam conditions in the near future. Lessons ensure that students have the necessary language to successfully deal with the exam components, and practice strategies needed to cope with the exam questions: integrated grammar, vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation. Teachers build students’ confidence in their abilities and sustain their motivation, and give students feedback on their progress by using real IELTS materials. A variety of IELTS-specific resources are used to maximise your achievement.

It was set up in Devon by local women to support other women and girls through the major life transitions of menstruation, pregnancy, birth and menopause by providing social, emotional and informational support. Our Vision & Mission Our vision is to live in a world where women and girls feel empowered and fulfilled at each stage of their life. We want to be part of creating a cohesive society where these rites of passage are honoured as gateways of personal development as well as biological milestones. Our mission is to provide social, emotional and educational support, to improve well-being and self-esteem. We support women, girls and people who menstruate through menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. We believe in intersectional feminism by promoting gender justice and racial justice. We are anti-racist and pro-trans rights. We believe in equality for all genders. We offer compassionate peer support, and provide a safe, nurturing environment to explore emotional and physical literacy as we pass through these rites of passage. There is no right or wrong way to go through these gateways, they are as individual as we are. But we don’t have to do it alone. What a different place our world will be if we felt belonging, supported, and respected as we welcomed ourselves to the next stage of life! Our History The seeds of this dream had been swirling for some years before finding a place to land. The Nest was officially registered as Community Interest Company in October 2019 by Hazel Acland, Jodie Wilkerson and Nancy Osborne. Together they launched their first project in March 2020 just as the covid-19 pandemic was sweeping the world. Plans quickly adapted to this new reality and became a weekly online wellbeing group to bring together pregnant and birthing people in the Exeter and East Devon area. The group has evolved to create a perinatal peer support network, training mums to support other mums through matrescence from pregnancy to parenting. The Nest has grown in other areas as well – starting to deliver services around menstruation and menopause support, with much more in the pipeline! Equality We aim to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere. We want to challenge all forms of oppression including those based on race, ethnicity, nationality, faith, gender, sexuality, learning ability, physical impairment, mental illness, age, occupation, income, or wealth. We aim to design our activities, services and decision making processes specifically to encourage and support participation from people who face disadvantage in society, including women, girls, BME people, disabled people, LGBTQI+ people, and people on low incomes. Safeguarding The Nest Southwest CIC is fully committed to safeguarding children, young people and adults. We believe that safeguarding is of paramount importance and that everyone has the right to be safe. We work hard to ensure that The Nest protects and promotes the safety and well-being of all children, young people and adults we work with.
