Welcome to Refashion My Town’s upcycled Denim Design competition! Refashion My Town is a social enterprise based in Chippenham. Our mission is to help and encourage young people to make a positive social and environmental impact through fashion. Our goal is to highlight the impact that fast fashion has on the environment and while doing so, we aim to help young people reduce, reuse, refashion and mend more. And what better way to start is by participating and joining our Upcycled Denim Design Competition!  Why Denim? Denim has become an integral part of everyday life, but it wasn’t always like that. Denim was long known to be worn by working class individuals such as miners, railroad workers and even labourers, before booming into a fashion trend that had not ceased to stop. Now you see denim worn by nearly everyone across the globe due to its easy and comfortable wear. However, denim has done more than become a global fashion trend, it has also contributed to the slow destruction of the environment. Most demin products are made with an overwhelmingly large number of dyes that are highly toxic and damaging. Denim also relies on cotton that needs lots of water and pesticides to grow. Pesticides are harmful to human health and can become an environmental risk but that is just one part of the problem. The production of one pair of jeans could require up to 80 gallons of water which is around 360 litres. This is a lot! This is why here at Refashion my Town, we want young people to reduce, reuse, refashion and mend more to combat the issues the fashion industry has on society and environment. Our upcycled Denim design competition is open to 14-18 year olds on Friday 22nd April 2022 and submissions will close on Monday 5th September 2022. This competition requires you to EITHER:  A. A 3-minute video explaining the concept, inspiration, and idea of your upcycled denim design. We would like to see a mock-up of your design within your presentation, as well as before and after of the material used. You can also include a completed final product or garment but this is optional.  Or B. 1 x A3 sheet with design concept 1 x A3 sheet with design development 1 x A3 sheet with final design including before and after Mock-up of final design ( Final product - optional ).  Please note: this is a design ( NOT sewing ) competition, so entries will mainly be judged based on creative flair and out of the box thinking, rather than technical sewing skills. So play and have fun developing your ideas. There will be FIVE judges of the competition:  • Liz Alstrom - Mayor of Chippenham • Rachel Sheila Kan - Founder, Circular earth  • Yvonne Skelton - Head of textiles, Bath College • Melissa Barnett - Curator, Chippenham Museum  • Tricia Morris - Mending and Upcycling Expert, Morrissews. All entrants have access to materials and trimmings from Refashion My Town. Refashion My Town will also have FREE drop-in sessions every Friday at 3.30 - 5 pm, starting 29th April, to help entrants develop their ideas and if necessary, learn new skills to complete their entries.

This class is about getting to grips with Tube Setting. You will have to option to create a pendant or ring – maybe even two pieces if time allows. Krista will guide you through the process of tube setting where you will be using the Foredom Pendant Motor to cut a seat for your facetted brilliant cut stone. From here you can design and make your pendant or ring, solder your setting in place and then learn the techniques to set your stone. WHEN: Sunday 15th September 10-5pm WHERE:  Workshop 925 based at The Mayford Centre, just outside of Woking and very close to Guildford. Unit F9 The Mayford Centre, Mayford Green Woking, Surrey  GU22 0PP TUTOR: Krista Thomson WHAT DOES THE DAY INVOLVE? This class is about getting to grips with Tube Setting. If you would like to bring along your own stones, that is not a problem, Krista can advise if they are suitable on the day. We will work with Cubic zirconias as they are affordable, strong and perfect while you practice. Each student has their own fully equipped bench with its own Foredom Pendant Motor. We have put together a Pinterest Board to show how tube setting can be used within jewellery making. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: It will help to have some experience with basic making skills. CLASS SIZE: 6 WHAT IS INCLUDED? All tools and consumables are supplied YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH: 0.8mm silver sheet – 0.5cm wide x 9cm length – for a band ring or pendant design. 2mm silver round wire – 15cm Length – for a pendant or 2 rings 4.5mm silver tube – 7cm 4mm Cubic Zirconias x 3 WHAT TO BRING: For safety reasons, during each class, you are required to wear appropriate footwear, we request that no open toed shoes are worn within Workshop 925. Long hair should also be tied back when working with the equipment. You may also wish to bring a notebook. We have handouts for many demonstrations, but there are always many tips and tricks given verbally by the tutor, which some might like to keep note of. Also pack your own lunch, snacks and drinks for the session. We regret we can’t offer tea and coffee at the moment due to Coronavirus so make sure you bring enough refreshments and supplies to keep you going during the day. APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ): In-House Training The APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) (IPMA Level D) is a knowledge-based qualification that allows candidates to demonstrate knowledge of all elements of project management. Our focus within both courses on offer this weekend is to offer our students intricate technical knowledge which is quickly lost to new technology. Well skilled technical jewellers able to create multiple designs by hand are rare and in demand, Peter is dedicated to sharing his endless knowledge and tips, and while he can usually be found online, we are lucky enough to offer classes with Peter in person – a golden opportunity not to be missed. WHEN: FRIDAY 6th September 10-4 WHERE:  Workshop 925 based at The Mayford Centre, just outside of Woking and very close to Guildford. Unit F9 The Mayford Centre, Mayford Green Woking, Surrey  GU22 0PP TUTOR: Peter Keep –About WHAT DOES THE DAY INVOLVE? Well skilled technical jewellers able to create multiple designs by hand are rare and in demand, Peter is dedicated to sharing his endless knowledge and tips, and while he can usually be found online, we are lucky enough to offer classes with Peter in person – a golden opportunity not to be missed. In this class Peter will teach you how to make a catch with a hinged locking mechanism.This project is easier than it first looks, but you do need to have experience piercing out shapes and drilling. During the one-day workshop Peter will show you some other options and explain how they work. You will also be provided with information handouts and materials. These specialist skills can be applied across other aspects of jewellery making. You NEVER stop learning as far as the jewellery industry is concerned and it is Peter’s passion to maintain traditional skill. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Students should have some workshop experience and be confident using normal jewellery tools and equipment.
