Typical responsibilities for a lean manufacturing operative are:
Carry out their work safely and meet the exacting quality standards demanded in a fast paced and efficient processing environment
Carry out manufacturing activities on multiple products with different specifications consecutively e.g. automotive manufacturing
Prepare, control, contribute to and complete manufacturing operations, and follow manufacturing processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Responsible for maintaining Health and Safety requirements at all times e.g. wearing correctPersonal Protective Equipment
Required to contribute, develop and support improvement in the manufacturing operation using continuous improvement methods and problem solving tools and techniques.
Work closely with stakeholders and will have clear reporting lines to ensure appropriate escalation
Examples of the job titles from across the manufacturing sector that would be covered within this standard include: Team Member Production; Manufacturing Production Operative; ManufacturingAssembly Operative; Manufacturing Inspection/Quality Assurance Operative.

Course Content


Knowledge
Health & Safety: Relevant statutory, organisational and health and safety regulations relating to lean manufacturing operations and safe practices
Environmental: Compliance procedures/systems in line with regulatory requirements e.g. ISO 14001 or other relevant environmental standards
Production: Their individual roles and responsibilities within the organisation and the flexibility required to deliver products to meet customers costs/delivery targets/requirements e.g. Just in time (JIT)
Lean Manufacturing Operations: Manufacturing standard operation procedures (SOPs) adherence and development of lean processes
Quality Control: Process equipment monitoring, data collection, error proofing and operating procedures e.g. ISO 9002 or other relevant quality standards
Problem Solving: The tools and methods of effective problem solving using data, reports and documents to resolve production related issues e.g. A3 report, graphs, matrices and escalate concerns
Continuous Improvement: How to study and identify ways to improve the safety, quality, cost or process efficiency using lean manufacturing tools e.g. kaizen
Communication: How to share information using a range of methods within the manufacturing environment e.g. oral, written, electronic, information boards, visual displays
Work Place Organisation: How to maintain a safe and efficient work site through work place organisation e.g. 5s and process ownership


Skills
Health & Safety: Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, and other relevant guidelines. Identifying risks within their processes and support/carry out counter measure activities to improve safe working. Manage tooling, equipment and materials daily in-line with supplier standards e.g. COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).
Environmental: Comply with environmental procedures and systems and contribute to the achievement of specific standards e.g. ISO 14001 or other relevant environmental standards and use the 4R’s (Reduce,Re-use, Recycle, Recover) where possible.
Production: Demonstrate their ability to carry out their role effectively, efficiently and flexibly maintaining lean manufacturing principles to meet customer’s demands e.g. JIT
Lean Manufacturing Operations: Demonstrate their skill and knowledge following SOPs and building their versatility across a number of processes and process areas. Select and use appropriate tools, equipment and materials to carry out the manufacturing operation
Quality Control: Demonstrate appropriate process documentation control. Accurately completing check sheets, monitoring process and equipment data efficiently and legibly using the correct terminology required to meet the quality standard e.g. ISO 9002
Problem Solving: Demonstrate their ability to identify and resolve problems within the lean manufacturing environment using effective problem solving tools and techniques. Manage problems that may occur during the manufacturing process within the limits of their responsibility and escalate as appropriate
Continuous Improvement: Generate ideas and contribute to process improvement activities individually or as part of a team through fact finding and analysis to improve the safety, environment, quality, cost or production process. Identifying and eliminating the 7 wastes (defects, over production, transportation, waiting, inventory, motion and processing)
Communication: Demonstrate communication skills which include oral, written, electronic (PC),information boards or visual displays to effectively share information
Work Place Organisation: Maintains and monitors the work site efficiently and effectively at all times using the elements of sifting, sorting, sweeping, spick & span (5’s) within the lean manufacturing environment

WHAT ARE THE SIX STAGES?
Description of the Six Stages of Understanding and Dealing with Racism (+ axis)
The Six Stages Framework is a psychological tool that is designed to assess where individual people or organisations are in their journey towards understanding and dealing with the complexities of individual and systemic racism, whether that is conscious or unconscious, overt or covert: direct or indirect
Stage +1: Unaware, silence and denial
This stage is characterised by having a lack of awareness of racial equity and diversity issues, often presenting as ignorance or being oblivious or ethnocentric. It is characterised by silence or denial of such issues, perhaps by keeping one’s head down, hoping a whole conversation will end, or finding ways to divert from a particular topic to other subjects that seem safer.
Stage +2: Dismissive and avoidant
People at this stage are aware of issues of race, however they are often dismissive of these issues and often believe that racial inequity and social injustice is not such a big issue. There is denial (and avoidance) that racial and social injustice is an issue, and an opinion that there are far more important inequalities and injustices in the world. This is what they tell themselves and others. The denial and discomfort that arises results in avoidance/resistance/anger and shifting attention to other issues that feel more manageable and tolerable.
They are more comfortable talking about gender issues and disability and will always point to other inequalities rather than racism.
At stage +2 people are avoidant of facing race issues; this distinguishes them from the person at stage +1 who is oblivious and ignorant.
Stage +3: Becoming aware of issues of race
At this stage, people are becoming aware of differences and of racism. They begin to question their original stance at Stages +1 and +2. They recognise that there is inequity and racism, but do not understand why, or what they can do about it. They express discomfort about talking about racial differences and racism and feel overwhelmed by the issues. They often express a sense of helplessness, guilt and even shame, and they just want to make everything be okay for everyone.
Stage +4: Open to learning
People at this stage are open to learning and having meaningful conversations about race, including challenging perceptions and biases. They are genuinely willing to listen, learn and re-educate themselves, and may seek out literature on the experiences and testimonials of black people and other ethnic minority groups. They reflect and readily engage in conversations about social, racial injustice and racism and will explore (and own) any unconscious bias they have,
Stage +5: Ability to see the bigger picture
This stage features an ability to reflect and genuinely engage in conversations and with the issues of social/racial injustice and racism, whereby people start to see the bigger picture around race. They are able to explore and own their unconscious bias, white privilege or other positions of power informed by the reading and education gained in Stage +4. They are keen to explore their role as an ally and how they can make a difference.
Stage +6: Leadership qualities
People at this stage are able to take on leadership roles in promoting racial equity, inclusion and social justice. They may join together with others to challenge social injustice and racism, possibly through community engagement, or through a desire to work with others towards a greater cause with the understanding that there is more that unites us than separates us. They understand that racism is about power and systems and focus their energies on supporting change in this area. They will speak up when necessary and challenge racism or perceptions of racism when others are afraid to. They are clear about allyship and their role.

Resenting time spent on race, display of outrage whilst projecting one’s own racism onto others

Stage +5: Ability to see the bigger picture
This stage features an ability to reflect and genuinely engage in conversations and with the issues of social/racial injustice and racism, whereby people start to see the bigger picture around race. They are able to explore and own their unconscious bias, white privilege or other positions of power informed by the reading and education gained in Stage +4. They are keen to explore their role as an ally and how they can make a difference.
Stage +6: Leadership qualities
People at this stage are able to take on leadership roles in promoting racial equity, inclusion and social justice. They may join together with others to challenge social injustice and racism, possibly through community engagement, or through a desire to work with others towards a greater cause with the understanding that there is more that unites us than separates us. They understand that racism is about power and systems and focus their energies on supporting change in this area. They will speak up when necessary and challenge racism or perceptions of racism when others are afraid to. They are clear about allyship and their role.

In supporting individuals and organisations to understand and challenge racism it is important to explore and to be able to identify some of the beliefs, values and behaviours individuals and organisations engage in as they struggle to reformulate their views and challenge their own prejudices.
The stages are designed to support individuals and organisations to identify where they are in terms of their awareness of understanding and responding to racism. WHAT ARE THE SIX STAGES?
Description of the Six Stages of Understanding and Dealing with Racism (+ axis)
The Six Stages Framework is a psychological tool that is designed to assess where individual people or organisations are in their journey towards understanding and dealing with the complexities of individual and systemic racism, whether that is conscious or unconscious, overt or covert: direct or indirect
Stage +1: Unaware, silence and denial
This stage is characterised by having a lack of awareness of racial equity and diversity issues, often presenting as ignorance or being oblivious or ethnocentric. It is characterised by silence or denial of such issues, perhaps by keeping one’s head down, hoping a whole conversation will end, or finding ways to divert from a particular topic to other subjects that seem safer.
Stage +2: Dismissive and avoidant
People at this stage are aware of issues of race, however they are often dismissive of these issues and often believe that racial inequity and social injustice is not such a big issue. There is denial (and avoidance) that racial and social injustice is an issue, and an opinion that there are far more important inequalities and injustices in the world. This is what they tell themselves and others. The denial and discomfort that arises results in avoidance/resistance/anger and shifting attention to other issues that feel more manageable and tolerable.
They are more comfortable talking about gender issues and disability and will always point to other inequalities rather than racism.
At stage +2 people are avoidant of facing race issues; this distinguishes them from the person at stage +1 who is oblivious and ignorant.
Stage +3: Becoming aware of issues of race
At this stage, people are becoming aware of differences and of racism. They begin to question their original stance at Stages +1 and +2. They recognise that there is inequity and racism, but do not understand why, or what they can do about it. They express discomfort about talking about racial differences and racism and feel overwhelmed by the issues. They often express a sense of helplessness, guilt and even shame, and they just want to make everything be okay for everyone.
Stage +4: Open to learning
People at this stage are open to learning and having meaningful conversations about race, including challenging perceptions and biases. This seminar supports you to implement ideas from the Six Stages Framework. It is designed for those who are reading or have read my book Understanding and Dealing with Everyday Racism- The Six Stages Framework
There will be an opportunity to discuss this and apply the six stages framework to identify action plans and ways forward.

The Six Stages Framework offers a language to talk about spectrum of discriminations. This includes violent acts on the negative dimensions of the Six Stages where people spiral out of control into bad, and destructive behaviours culminating at stage -6 which some may refer to as extreme and violent behaviours.
Whilst the Six Stages framework was originally formulated with racism and racial injustice in mind, it can be adapted to other forms of discriminations such as gender, disability or LGBTQ and also to other extreme acts such as violence towards women or violent killings like we have just seen in Uvalde and Buffalo.
Sometimes we fail to see the signs and symptoms of behaviours spiralling down the negative axis of the Six Stages Framework whether that be as it applies to racism or to other forms of discriminations including violence. Is this because we don’t have the language to think about these issues or because we just don’t like to think about behaviours.

How do I attend?

EITHER -
CLASSROOM OPTION - Attend one of our scheduled classroom locations, completing your Introduction to Phlebotomy Course over 2 days. You will also complete your Advanced Training at the end of the first day and your Competency Training at the end of the second day.

Our Introduction to Phlebotomy and Advanced Phlebotomy Training Kits are supplied at no charge when booking our virtual classroom training option.
If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available to add at time of booking. Our comprehensive training kits each mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video tutorials, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for a one day Zoom session to complete your Introduction to Phlebotomy virtual classroom training, followed by your Advanced Training in the evening of the same day. You have the option to add a classroom-based competency session, awarding a CPD Accredited Geopace Certificate of Competency, at time of booking.

Our Virtual Classroom option includes two very comprehensive training kits - one for your introductory course and one for your advanced course. 4 - IR Vein Detector:
Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.
5 - Veins in back of hand:
Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.
10 - Microtube collection
Correct use of BD Microtainers (and similar micro-collection bottles) - collection and handling.

If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available for you to add at time of booking. Training kits mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video instructions, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for your one full day to complete your cannulation and injection course training.

Our Virtual Classroom option includes two very comprehensive training kits - one for your cannulation course and one for your injection course. Kits are included at no charge (normally £79.95 and £39.95 respectively) and are yours to keep and to continue to practice with after you have finished your courses. The equipment and supplies included in your kits are the same as those used if you choose the classroom option.
