P404 Air Sampling of Asbestos and MMMF and Requirements for a Certificate of Reoccupation Following Clearance of Asbestos is the industry standard qualification for those whose work involves air sampling and clearance testing, such as asbestos analysts. In addition to holding the qualification, they are required to undertake and provide evidence of annual refresher training.

RP404 Refresher is a new course, specifically designed to meet this requirement. RP404 Refresher enables candidates to revise and update their knowledge on air sampling and clearance testing techniques, and to receive a certificate of course completion by passing a written examination, which covers both the theory and practice of air sampling and clearance testing.

Q Fever is a disease caused by infection with the bacterium Coxiella burnetii, which can infect cattle, goats, sheep and many other mammals. Studies on the UK cattle herd indicate that Q fever is highly prevalent.

Q fever is zoonotic, with those people in direct contact with ruminants at most risk – This will be a great opportunity for those working with livestock or going onto farms, to get the answers to the many questions that this disease raises.

Jonathan is Chief Executive at RAFT Solutions and Professor of Sustainable Livestock Health & Welfare at Harper and Keele Veterinary School, chairing the InSHAW research group there.  He is a practicing independent farm veterinary surgeon, graduating from Cambridge University in 1996 and is a partner and chair of Bishopton Veterinary Group. 

Jonathan is a Fellow and Specialist of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; in 2015 he was awarded the UK Dairy Vet of the year.  He is Past-President of the British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA), has held a range of representative or policy linked roles and currently sits on the Veterinary Products Committee (VPC) of the VMD, the steering group of the Ruminant Health & Welfare Group and the EU ‘Q fever’ one health panel.

He is chair of the Innovate UK Agriculture Sector Group and chair of the Defra Pathway Chairs Group. He is a Fellow of Askham Bryan College and chairs the Animal Health & Welfare Board for England at Defra. He has published widely in the field of sustainable food, herd health, precision livestock farming and breeding technologies.

Katherine grew up in Leicestershire and went to the Royal Veterinary College, graduating with honours in 2007 before working in mixed practices in the Midlands with dairy, beef and equine clients. 

Katherine has a busy home life being married to a beef and sheep farmer with three children and having an active involvement in rural life. 

Katherine joined Ceva Animal Health in 2014 as part of the technical team, covering the UK in the role of veterinary advisor for the ruminant part of the business.

Upon joining Curtis Brown in 2018, Ciara Finan worked with senior agents Jonny Geller and Sheila Crowley on their lists of bestselling and prize-winning authors such as Lisa Jewell, Susanna Clarke, David Nicholls, Jojo Moyes and Nigella Lawson. LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION

Una is a Rights Agent at Susanna Lea Associates and am starting to build a client list. 

She grew up in London and graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA in English in 2021. At university, Una was particularly interested in contemporary West African and South Asian literature. She started as an agent's assistant at SLA London in 2022 and now handles some translation rights and provides support with editorial work and submissions.

Una's favourite reads always set her at ease right away and draws her in with impressive and accessible storytelling, memorable characters or an original hook. Una enjoys writing which expands her worldview, makes her laugh out loud or keeps her on her toes with its twists and turns. She welcomes submissions from debut authors and would be keen to read across a wide range of genres and styles.

She is looking for literary, upmarket and book club fiction, and is always drawn to stories that explores the challenges and complexities of love and relationships in all its forms —within families, between friends or in romantic relationships. Una loves the way in which familial relationships are dissected in The Wren, The Wren by Anne Enright and the impact of the local community in Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson. She is always drawn to novels with a strong sense of community, whether they are unified by geography, culture, or in other unexpected ways.

Una has always loved reading international and translated fiction and welcomes submissions from authors writing contemporary fiction that engages with cultures and traditions from around the world, such as in voices of the deities in Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi or the subversive tales of Sayaka Murata. 

She is not looking for children’s or YA titles, science fiction or high-concept fantasy, but is open to submissions from authors writing in the speculative fiction space, and books with fantastical or otherworldly elements, be that magical realism or supernatural horror, such as Mona Awad's campus novel with a twist, Bunny. Una would also love to read more writing that engages with the natural world and reminds us of the limitations of human understanding.

In non-fiction, Una enjoys books that furthers her understanding of wider societal issues — nature and the environment, culture, and little-known history. Her recent non-fiction favourites are Eve by Cat Bohannon, Doppelgänger by Naomi Klein and Unearthed by Claire Ratinon.

0 degrees, 37 degrees C and other non-standard conditions.
A look at advances in technology and how to use the latest devices.
M04 - Point of Care Testing:
What is POC Testing? Advantages, Disadvantages and Clinical
Outcomes. Comparison of POC with lab testing. 10 common POC tests. Roles for phlebotomists performing POC Tests.
M05 - Neonates and Children:
Sample collection from new-born to pre-adult. A detailed overview of legal principles of law including child consent and child protection for phlebotomists. Neonatal and child blood collection equipment.
A comprehensive look at heel and finger-prick procedures including
microtainers, lancets and capillary tube collection. Detailed heel prick procedure. Paediatric finger prick collection. The life-threatening hazard of over-collecting. Communication techniques in differing age bands.
Consent and the law. Basic principles of lawful consent for neonates and paediatric patients. Child protection.
Detailed analysis of neonatal and paediatric blood collection including Guthrie card collection. Neonatal bottles - colours and tests. Paediatric blood gases collection.
Butterfly needles - when to use. Blood tests during pregnancy. Neonatal blood screening - nine conditions covered. Bilirubin in neonates.
M06 - Geriatric Patients:
The challenges of phlebotomy in older people. Understanding skin changes and venepuncture implications. A profile of common
geriatric blood tests. Age related problems. Procedural precautions.
M07 - Special Procedures:
Drawing blood from back of hand. Drawing blood from lower limb veins. Managing the unwilling or difficult patient. Managing the psychiatric patient. Managing the isolated patient. Non-routine blood tests. Managing the latex allergy patient (type 1 and type 4 reactions). Latex indicators. Sample handling - non-routine procedures. Drug trials and research projects.
M08 - Special Tests and Sample Handling Procedures:
A look at sample collection at specific times of day and night,
samples that are protected from light, collected on ice and
collected at body temperature. Procedures for each group - collection notes, analytic time, optimal collection time and notes for each group.
M09 - Advanced Phlebotomy Tasks:
Additional procedures. Maintaining POC equipment. Stock control and stock rotation. Quality control. Data entry. Product evaluation. Training and competency evaluation.
M10 - Alternative Environments:
A step-by-step look at non-clinical phlebotomy environments including private testing, DEFRA, forensic and police, cord blood collection, DNA analysis, veterinary services, overseas and volunteering.

PART 2 (CLASSROOM)
MORNING , AFTERNOON OR EVENING SESSION:

1 - Welcome, introductions and overview:
- Classroom - health & safety briefing, schedule overview.
- Virtual Classroom - audio/visual checks and registration. Unpacking and overview of your training kit.
2 - Syringe and Needle (open system): Correct use and applications.
3 - Monovette (open and closed systems):
Using the Monovette system in aspiration mode - correct use and applications.
Using the Monovette system in evacuated mode - correct use and applications.
4 - IR Vein Detector:
Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.
5 - Veins in back of hand:
Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.
10 - Microtube collection
Correct use of BD Microtainers (and similar micro-collection bottles) - collection and handling.
