africa writes - exeter

Africa Writes festival is a biennial celebration of contemporary literature from Africa and the diaspora, brought to you by the Royal African Society and presented in partnership with the British Library. The tenth edition of the festival introduces brand new regional partnerships that sees the festival co-curate satellite events in Leeds, Swindon and Birmingham. We will start on Saturday 5th March 2022 at Leeds Literary Festival in partnership with British Library Bath Spa, Geraldine Connor Foundation and Leeds University Centre for African Studies. The programme has been curated by Khadijah Ibrahiim with additional sponsorship from Flutterwave. Future dates will be announced on our Africa Writes 2022 festival page. Launched in 2012, Africa Writes showcases established and emerging talent from the African continent and its diaspora in what is now the UK’s biggest celebration of contemporary African writing taking place over an exciting summer weekend. The festival features book launches, readings, author appearances, panel discussions, family workshops, and other activities. Our previous headline speakers have been Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ngugi wa Thiong’o with son Mukoma wa Ngugi, Wole Soyinka, Ama Ata Aidoo, Ben Okri, Nawal El Saadawi, Alain Mabanckou, Chigozie Obioma, Mona Elthahawy and Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah.

Sharpe Films is the website for Becky Sharpe, a Film Director with a passion for movies that started when she was a child. She went to film school at Central St Martins after studying Fine Art and English Literature at Exeter University. In her early career she created fine art dance films, winning awards and making video installations and experimental short films. She went on to work in East Africa for Associated Press Television and then as a Producer on drama at Hybrid Films in London. After a masters in Screenwriting, Becky relocated to Spain to raise her young family. She made short films in Spanish and English, directed and produced for Sky television and wrote independent feature scripts. She returned to London in 2013 to make a film with disabled dancers for the opening of the Tate Britain (see Tate Dancers), and she went on to set up Sharpe Films.

West London Bass Lessons was founded by Dan Ezard to provide Guitar, Bass Guitar and Double Bass Lessons to students of all ages and abilities. Dan has over 15 years live and studio experience touring throughout the UK and abroad and his teaching experience includes Head of Bass Guitar Studies at Exeter College, Head of Bass at Portland Place School in London alongside a large number of private students of all ages. Bass lessons will be suited to your individual needs and can be focused on your favourite music style / taste and will be taken at your own pace. A few of the topics normally covered in my lessons are: Left hand positioning, Right hand finger style, Slap bass, Advanced techniques (tapping, harmonics, chords/solo bass) Pick /plectrum technique, Style files – An in depth study of ground breaking bassists such as Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Geddy Lee or Larry Graham, Scales & Arpeggios, Sight Reading, Harmony & theory, Ear training, Composition, Music Technology. Double Bass lessons focus on posture, hand positioning, jazz pizzicato and walking bass bass lines, classical double bass techniques including the ABRSM Grades, how to hold the bow (French & German Bow) and how to choose the correct instrument for you. Purchasing your first double bass can be a daunting prospect so i’m always very happy to recommend certain luthiers, shops or websites.

There are many examples of outstanding student achievement at the college. Sherfina Odumanye is one of these. Sherfina worked incredibly hard in her second year, pushing herself constantly to improve. Her growth and development as a student were wonderful to witness. One of the traits that Sherfina has as a student, which will continue to serve her well in her future academic and professional careers, is her willingness to take on feedback and apply it to her ever-developing voice as a writer and critical thinker. We are also impressed by her ambition and drive to produce exemplary work. Sherfina achieved three As and we couldn’t be prouder of her. Sherfina is going on to study Law at University of Exeter. She commented, “Effort and hard work really pays off! If you don’t work hard, you don’t get the grades. I got an A in English Language and Literature, Law and Sociology. Teachers really care about your future, they ensure you achieve high grades, but they care about you here as an individual. My Law teacher inspired me to consider Law at university.” Salim Farah is another student who arrived at Haringey Sixth Form College, having not quite achieved the GCSE’s results he had hoped for. Over the two years, we worked to improve his academic ability and self-confidence and have witnessed Salim blossom into an outstanding student, achieving two As and a B in his A-levels. Salim is planning to study Law at SOAS. Despite the national variability due to the impact COVID had nationally, we are delighted with our excellent results this year.
