Kevin McCallister (Macauly Culkin) is fed up with his family, so when he accidentally misses being taken on their Christmas holidays, he's left all by himself in the family home. Kevin needs to learn how to fend for himself quickly though, as two scheming burglars plan to loot all the nice wealthy houses that have been left empty over the holidays. Date: 24th October 2023 Time: 4pm Location: Studio A Sorcha Kurien-Walsh, a former pupil at Central Film School, has kindly agreed to join us to discuss her career as a TV screenwriter and her work on the upcoming comedy series Rivals, set to star David Tennant and Danny Dyer and release on Disney+ next year. Additionally, she will speak about her BBC Studios short film 'The Pink Pill', and answer any questions students may have about working as a screenwriter in the TV industry. Join us for a special 61st anniversary screening of JFK (1991) by Oliver Stone Step back into one of the most tumultuous moments in American history with a powerful screening of the theatrical version of Oliver Stone’s gripping and controversial thriller that explores the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Through dramatic storytelling and a deep dive into the era’s conspiracy theories, the film raises provocative questions that still stir debate today. Event Highlights Historical context: CFS welcomes Dr Mark de Valk, Course Leader of Practical Filmmaking at Central Film School, who will first deliver a pre-screening overview on Oliver Stone’s 1991 film JFK. Film screening: A special 61st anniversary screening of the theatrical version of JFK (1991) by Oliver Stone. There will also be a demonstration of a Bell & Howell 8mm film camera that captured the event on 22/11/63.

Date: Tuesday 12th December Time: 4pm Location: Studio A Noted documentarian Craig McCall will be joining us to show his documentary CAMERAMAN: The Life & Work of Jack Cardiff and to discuss the career of the legendary cinematographer, whose work includes some of the most acclaimed British films of the time (The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and Death). Craig is a dedicated film historian, and this event is open to anyone interested in cinematography, film history or British cinema. Craig McCall’s documentary CAMERAMAN: The Life & Work of Jack Cardiff premièred at Cannes and subsequently screened at over fifty film festivals and was sold worldwide. As an Executive Producer he has made other film related docs including Me & Me Dad on film director John Boorman which also premièred at Cannes, Natan on the pioneering French filmmaker Bernard Natan, Behind The Sword In The Stone on the making of ‘Excalibur’ and Leslie Howard: The Man Who Gave A Damn. All his films have been made independently outside the broadcast system. 

DATE: Tuesday 25th June TIME: 4pm LOCATION: Studio A One of the first and most-important British LGBT+ films ever made,  My Beautiful Laundrette helped open discussion about gay identity, and is also influential in its portrayal not just of an LGBT+ couple, but of an inter-racial couple as well. Daniel Day-Lewis came storming into the world of cinema with his role as Johnny, a hardened street punk hiding his true identity. Director Stephen Frears captures the mood and vibe of Thatcher-era London, creating a time-capsule of a distant world we're unfamiliar with. Book your tickets in advance.

Join us in January to kick start your new year with improvisation. This fully interactive session, led by Charlotte Gaughan, will provide an introduction to improvisation, a toolkit of games and exercises for your own practise and a grounding in the key principles of yes-and, listening and spontaneity. It’s also a great opportunity to appease your inner child with over two hours of play. DATE: Thursday 11th July TIME: 4pm LOCATION: Studio A Chris Jones is one of the lead organisers of the London Screenwriting Festival, and also recently served as Splinter Unit Director of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One. He will be discussing both how students can navigate film festivals and make their work stand out, and also his experiences working in a position of creative control on a large-scale blockbuster film.
