Despite the fact that betting on sport is illegal for anyone under the age of
18, Australia is a haven for gambling operators. The government has done its
best to minimise the harm that gambling can cause by developing policies
limiting the amount of gambling that takes place and prohibiting certain types
of gambling advertising. The latest survey by the Australian Communications and
Media Authority has revealed that wagering on sports in Australia is on the up,
with a reported increase of 5 per cent from last year to the year to come. The
research looked at the most popular types of gambling in Australia, and found
that there are roughly two million Australians who bet on sport at least once a
year. This equates to a loss of approximately $921 million a year. In order to
minimise the impact of gambling on the community, the government has developed a
community education campaign to highlight the potential risks involved. In
addition, the Northern Territory has imposed a point-of-consumption tax on
betting operators, making a hefty chunk of revenue go to the state. The
Australian state governments can determine whether the licences they award to
gambling operators are exclusive or non-exclusive, and what kind of fee to
charge.
