But, when we look at communication closely and really drill down into what we are doing in conjunction with how our brain works (neuroscience), how internal, organisational, and social politics control what we believe we can say, how hierarchical positioning impacts our honesty and how the lack of psychological safety means we say what we know others want to hear rather than what they need to hear…. It is oh so complicated! This workshop not only explores the concept of excellent communication, but we also want to hear what you believe it is too. We also delve into how organisational culture influences our perception of speaking up. Factors that hinder open and honest communication, and we work collaboratively towards removing these barriers to achieve a communication style that fosters trust and transparency, creating psychological safety. This workshop is particularly relevant to our Emotional Intelligence workshop (EI and Me). We firmly believe that developing emotional intelligence is the key to unlocking Clean Communication, a skill that is crucial for all of us, regardless of our roles and responsibilities, so that we thrive in our professional environment. Hannah entered the field of wellbeing by default after having her own personal experience of hitting ‘rock bottom’. She had spent 9 years being owner/operator of a couple of NZ’s top hospitality businesses, during which time she worked extremely hard and at times played pretty hard too. Hannah burnt out as did her relationship with her partner, who was also her business partner. It didn’t end well, she lost everything – businesses, income, house, relationship and experienced anxiety and depression for a period of time as a single Mum with two very young children. For Hannah, she only had one choice and that was to change the way she thought. Learning how the body worked in relation to the mind and how to activate primal resources we all have inside ourselves was what lead Hannah to start the first holistic workplace wellbeing company in New Zealand so she could inspire, motivate and share tools to support others. Along the way Hannah trained with leaders in their fields when it came to studying mind/body exercise, the importance of the breath, our hormones (the feel good and stress ones) and that the simple and powerful choices we can make. She has trained with Wim Hof, founder of the Wim Hof Method, Dr Kataria, founder of Laughter Yoga and Nic Marks, founder of the Five Ways to Wellbeing. After reconnecting with Hannah in 2017, there was a real synergy in the direction Jo was going with a high focus on personal coaching which frequently turned into wellbeing type conversations. She introduced Hannah to HBDI and she was hooked! Together they developed a Whole Brain Wellbeing plan and workshops to match. It was very clear that taking a whole brain approach to developing workshops and wellbeing itself, would ensure that everyone is accounted for. One size doesn’t fit all for learning or wellbeing. By understanding thinking preferences and taking a whole brain approach: varying initiatives and content would appeal to everyone, no matter who they are strategies and programmes would engage more people people would learn how to communicate better, how to understand their colleagues and how to feel more empathy and respect for each other Their varying skills led them to go into business together and very quickly they developed The Wellbeing Challenge web app based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing which has had great results. A wellbeing platform, Your Wellbeing Matters is to be launched in 2020. Her business partner, Jo Fife, entered the business a number of years later when the two of them re-connected after many years and started having a conversation about a neurometric measuring tool Jo had been using for many years, which is based on how people prefer to think (not their skills and capabilities). Whether it was singing karaoke, listening to audiobooks, or devising a radio station in his bedroom, Mark has always appreciated the power of the human voice. His love for radio started at a local level, in the glory-days of personality-based breakfast radio. That love affair was sparked at his city’s famous BRMB, but a succession of cost-cutting measures, takeovers, and technological advances would slowly snuff out that candle. Episode one Mark studied Media & Communication at Birmingham City University, specialising in Internet radio. He graduated the year the term “podcasting” was coined, but it would be a further four years before he’d pluck up the courage to pick up a mic and plug it into the Internet. But in 2008, the podcast bug finally bit, and Mark started what would be a 14+ year career helping people make podcasts, first in exchange for beer, and then for money. The little company with the robot fist for a logo In 2016 Mark founded the media hosting company Podiant, which took him to the British Podcast Awards, and saw him present at International Podcast Day in 2020. The product served millions of listeners across thousands of podcasts, and in 2021 Mark sold Podiant so he could focus on working more closely with individuals and small teams, to set them up for podcasting success from day one. From the ear to the brain to the heart Mark founded Origin in 2021 to help impact entrepreneurs build trust with their audiences, and catalyse change. He does this through a combination of consulting, training, coaching, and production. The European Agency on the Development of Special Needs Education (EADSNE) (2006) highlighted individual differences as one of the largest challenges faced by teachers in mainstream schools not only in the UK but across Europe. Teacher training and preparation to support neurodiverse pupils within a mainstream setting has failed to keep up with the changes within the field of inclusion leaving teachers ill equipped to achieve true inclusivity within their classroom. The most recent study of mainstream teachers within the West Midlands highlighted that less than 29% of teachers felt confident to support the neurodiverse pupils within their class with 17% unsure of the meaning of Neurodiversity. Navigating Neurodiversity provides hands-on training and support for mainstream schools to improve teacher confidence when supporting the neurodiverse pupils within their classroom. To provide advice and guidance of ensuring barriers to learning within the classroom/school are permanently removed and providing ongoing intervention and support strategies, including de-escalation techniques to provide and happy, safe and inclusive environment which best supports learning for all pupils. We also work with leadership team, including SENCo, providing support, advice, planning and assessment documentation throughout the EHCP application process to ensure a successful outcome is achieved with maximum support gained for learners with SEN. Neurodiversity is the term to show the diverse way of the way the brain functions, specifically the range of ways in which we learn, think and relate to others (Honeybourne 2018). The neurodiversity paradigm argues that there is not one ‘normal’ way in which the brain functions. Originating within the study of autism to show that there was no ‘norm’ with regard to learning and social interaction and that autism was not a disorder, neurodiversity is now the term used to include all perceived neurological differences including dyscalculia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and Tourette syndrome and supports the theory that no set way of neurocognitive functioning is more important/normal than the other and that differences in learning should be supported and embraced.
