We believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of suicide. PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. Suicide is the biggest killer of people aged 35 and under in the UK. We believe that suicide is preventable. PAPYRUS was founded in 1997 by a group of bereaved parents, who had each lost children to suicide. Our founding parents shared core beliefs that suicide is preventable, and that those of us with lived experience of suicide have a valuable and unique contribution to make to the wider conversation around suicide. Since then, PAPYRUS has grown into a UK-wide charity with offices in north west England, south west England, West Midlands, London, Northern Ireland, north Wales, south Wales, and Scotland. Today, we are a leading youth suicide prevention charity in the UK. Our suicide prevention helpline, HOPELINE247, is staffed by trained suicide prevention advisers, who work with young people – and anybody concerned for a young person – to help keep them safe from suicide. HOPELINE247 is a free and confidential call, text and email service, which is available from 9am to midnight, every day of the year. We deliver our suicide prevention education and training packages to thousands of people each year, to create suicide-safer communities across the UK. We also press for change to current legislation around suicide prevention on a regional and national level. The work we do centres around three key principles; Support Equip and Influence.

It all started over 45 years ago at a kitchen table in Maida Vale, London, where Michael Norton our founder sat down to research and write ‘The Directory of Social Change’. A directory, the first of its kind, full of ideas, information and contacts for those wanting to explore alternatives for creating better communities and a better society. And then what? Four directories were published on community, education, housing and women. In 1977, Michael organised his first fundraising training and started publishing practical information on fundraising, marketing, management and legal issues for charities. In 1984, looking for a more sustainable source of income, Michael created the first “Guide to Company Giving” and then asked Luke FitzHerbert to create a “Guide to the Major Trusts”. This was how the Directory of Social Change started, adopting the principles of social enterprise in structuring how it operated and was funded.

The foundation stone for Victoria Hall, Higher Bebington, was laid down in 1897, on land donated by Miss Catherine King for the benefit of the residents of Higher Bebington. Miss King, in the deed of conveyance, requested that the building be designated as the village hall. Building began in the year of Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee and, as the Village Road upper elevation frieze reveals, it became Victoria Hall not The Village Hall. The original hall is constructed, as its base reveals, of Storeton stone, a local sandstone quarried only a few hundred yards away at one of the Storeton quarries. The sandstone is of a pale creamy colour. The upper elevations are white rendered with intricately painted floral friezes to the top storey. The base and upper elevations are separated by red brick banding, under a series of red clay tile roofs.
