To say I am a fan of Pilates is somewhat of an understatement – It has changed my life quite fundamentally. I discovered Pilates in 2012 and the impact has been profound. I am both physically and mentally stronger, I have more energy, I have more stamina, and yes, I look better. Let me explain each one of those rather dramatic statements. The basic principles of Pilates are breathing, concentration, control, centering, precision and flow. I am stronger physically due to the nature of the exercises – they’re intense. Pilates was originally developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates from a combination of yoga, martial arts, boxing, and weightlifting. It’s not a high impact cardio routine, but controlled, precise movements that challenge the body to promote strength, flexibility, and balance – and it just works. The body becomes stronger, firmer and better aligned to cope with daily life more easily. I feel energised because I have learned how to breathe properly and I have improved my posture significantly – I have asthma – quite a scary condition I find – and understanding the effect of posture has been a massive help and taking control of my breathing has empowered me – I feel in control and less scared as such I am stronger mentally. I find daily activities don’t leave me drained as I have much more energy. I’m 43 and my world revolves around my family; a very active husband, he’s the current Masters National Champion and used to swim for his country; our brilliant daughter Emma, she’s 6 so every day brings something new; our busy busy dog Oscar, a working cocker who nobody told is nearly 11; and this year we added a couple of loppy bunnies to the team. We are more active than the pre-Pilates me would have been able to be – I’m so grateful I discovered it – the lifestyle it affords me is wonderful. I didn’t start Pilates to lose weight (there are faster routes if that’s your ambition) but lose it I have – not a particularly massive amount – I was never a candidate for Britain’s Biggest Loser but it looks like I have lost more than the scales suggest – just because engaging the core muscles brings about an improved posture that looks better. The lower abdominals and hips are where it’s most significant – and the strength that comes with that is clear. Pilates exercises are applicable – and adaptable – to suit pretty much anybody, whether you’re an active individual or not. The Jo Hyne Dance School is a friendly, local school, with classes in the Totton and Eling Community Centre, Totton, Southampton, Hampshire.photo_3 Jo Hyne Jo has been involved in dance from a young age and was one of an elite few trained by The Royal Ballet School and English National Ballet. Mrs Hyne is also trained and qualified in the ISTD Syllabus (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing), which enables children to be put in for ISTD examinations. The school has been established for 8 years now, and is continuing to grow successfully. We offer classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern Dance, Jazz , Musical Theatre and Street, in a fun but disciplined atmosphere, and the children often get to dance in local fund raising events, school fetes, join in the Carnival and as well as performing in the School Show, children can have the opportunity to audition for local /regional auditions for any productions that arise. BALLET (ISTD). AGE 3 – ADULT This beautiful classical art form is the basis and grounding of all Dance and movement. With its creative lines,artistic shapes and sheer strength, it is the main key to preparing the body to conquer all the other forms of Dance. MODERN DANCE (ISTD) FROM YEAR R- ADULT This is a more energetic, rhythmic dance style which was born in America before travelling worldwide. This is the form often seen in West End shows in the Musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities too. These classes are structured, with set exercises and free work, which include isolations, jumps, and lyrical work. TAP DANCE (ISTD) YEAR R – ADULT This is where the dancer performs wearing special shoes which enable him/ her to strike the floor, beating out different rhythms to give a distinctive sound. This dance form is again found in Musical productions and is also a theatrical art.

Tai Chi looks like a strange slow motion exercise which is a well choreographed active mind-body exercise practiced in a precise order. The changes which happen inside us are reflected by our behavior on the outside. Any problem will no longer be viewed that way. You approach your problems with an open mind. You naturally develop into who you really are. Benefits of Tai Chi during learning are patience, acceptance of things as they are, increase in physical, emotional, mental awareness and greater insight. We are immersed in a life style attitude that would stress the immune system, mainly as overwork or a hectic lifestyle schedule, indulging in risky behavior, relationships against our self-esteem. Remember stress can also come from a fragile sense of self worth, feeling powerless against multiple pressures. Tai Chi offers you a lot, much more than one can possibly achieve in a life time. It changes people’s life to the best. Makes us aware of our emotional state and can change it any moment thus keeping our mind clear and focused. If you feel that you need a change - Tai Chi will do it for you. It will give you the ability to realize and explore yourself much deeper.

Being a teacher of Wing Chun is a big responsibility and one I am proud to have. I feel it's important you know a little about my family and my background, as we all have our own stories to share, and it explains the reason I started training and still train today. 8 years old I started training with my dad. My Father was a complicated man, he was in the army for 28 years during which time he was involved in many conflicts ranging from Ireland to the gulf. Starting as a rifle man in 3 RGJ Royal Green Jackets, he joined at 15 years old by lieing to the recruitment office and geting away with it. He quickly moved through the ranks and became an SAS soldier, British Army boxing champion and left the army as a captain and intelligence officer. My Father also helped train Andy McNab who later became famous for an SAS operation called Bravo Two Zero where he was captured behind enemy lines. The chief of general staff (CGS) and commander of the British Army's land forces Sir Richard Dannatt attended my Fathers funeral and he was cremated with full military honours and regiment bugalair, I was very proud as you can imagine. My dad, having an interest in boxing was also attracted to all types of martial arts. At the beginning of some time in Borneo he told me he met someone after seeing them training Qigong just outside a town on the edge of the jungle. I don't know much about this other than what I remember my dad telling me but I know the person he trained with was old not young and very powerful, but I don't know what his lineage was. After training Iron Shirt Qigong during his time in Borneo it had an impact on his life that changed him forever and his outlook on Kung Fu and Qigong. By the time I started training with my dad he held instructor qualifications in karate, boxing, judo and western sword fighting (fencing) but also was training and a teacher of Tai Chi and Qigong because of his influence in Borneo and continued development there after in these skills, in fact he stopped training all other skills to focus on Tai Chi and Qigong for the rest of his life as this had the biggest effect on him and most benefit in his opinion. After this time and because of the high skill level he had developed through his training he was also invited and asked to become a coach for the British Bob-sledge Team. Under his guidance they won bronze in the 1998 winter Olympics training traditional methods along side modern methods to develop more power and speed when getting the bob-sledge off the track. Despite all of this and many other opportunities to become well known due to his past he kept himself to himself. He was actually a very thoughtful and quiet man who generally liked his own company and to be by himself if not with family. Until I left school I would train with him most mornings. Sometimes boxing, sometimes Kung Fu and 18 Qigong exercises as well as just talking strategy or just about life in general and how the arts connect to this. He used to always say to me that I was a second generation of our family to study martial arts and this was very important to him. He would say, like him, I must keep up training and studying my whole life so these skills can be passed down my family and every generation would get better and achieve more. This is one of the reasons I' ve worked towards achieving this, besides my love for this art form. When i left school i started to follow in my dads foot steps and became a out door instructor and fencing sword instructor, i moved to the island of white to teach full time, however it wasn't till i came home before also joining the army i came across Wing Chun Kung Fu for the first time.
