We are a Hackney-based community-interest company focusing on connecting people with the natural world in creative and collaborative ways. Through innovative teaching and experiential learning, Cordwainers Grow hopes to connect and inspire a network of social and environmental innovators. We evolved out of Cordwainers Garden, a community growing space on land belonging to the London College of Fashion in Mare Street. We wanted to make the link with what the staff and students were doing inside the college to the outside so, in 2011 started growing plants for dyeing and to make fibre. The garden closed in April 2019, but Cordwainers Grow continues and we champion sustainable community growing in the face of increased competition for space and inequality of access. Batik Experience Days in Derbyshire, UK Try your hand at the ancient art of batik. Using hot wax and an array of colourful dyes to produce textile and paper creations, batik is a fun and unique way to craft. The process of creating batik offers a journey of discovery and surprise. The applied hot wax saves an area of colour which then resists further applications of colour as the piece builds and changes before you. Learn how to develop motifs & pattern with each subsequent application of the waxing and dyeing process and be amazed at what is finally revealed once all the wax is removed! My name is Sue and I am an experienced artist and crafts tutor with many years practicing batik. Please see www.susan-rhodes.co.uk for examples of my batik work. I offer you a warm welcome and a chance to come explore this intriguing craft. Opened in November 2018, Attic Batik was originally housed in the Market Place of Belper’s historic former public house, The White Swan. I can now be found crafting from my home-studio in Ripley and I am available to teach or to give talks and demonstrations. Cordwainers Dye Studio Debbie Mitchener is the founder of the Cordwainers Dye Studio which specialises in consultancy and collabortion around the use and development of natural dyes. Working from a dedicated studio in East London the aim of the studio is support designers and emerging dye technicians to use sustainable dye practices. We are also the UK’s first for hire Natural Dye Studio offering 3 individual spaces to hire for sampling and smaller scale dyeing projects. As a social enterprise 10% of our profits are given to Cordwainers Grow who run food and growing classes in the communtiy with a focus on working with homeless families, migrants and refugees as well as local residents keen to learn more about sustainable living.

Hi I'm Katie, the face behind Sealy MacWheely. I am a passionate spinner, knitter and lover of all things bright and colourful! Sealy MacWheely began with very humble beginnings and came into being initially whilst I was a student to raise money for the brilliant charity, Childreach International, with whom I trekked through the Andes of Peru in the summer of 2013. Once the trek to the summit of Machu Picchu was complete I simply couldn't let go of my wee business and after graduating and moving down to the outskirts of the wonderful city of Glasgow I refreshed and rebranded and began the daunting task of vending at local craft markets. It didn't take long for my business to outgrow itself and soon I was driving across the country to larger yarn and fibre festivals and events and with a little hesitation and a lot of excitement I eventually quit my regular job and took up Sealy MacWheely full time. This of course led me to my wee Yarn & Fibre Shop which would never have existed had it not been for the incredible support of our amazing yarn community. With the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign in the autumn of 2018 I was able to move into my beautiful wee shop in Kirkintilloch where I could focus all my creative energy into sharing my love of fluff and colour! I am also passionate about ecology and the environmental impact of my business has been factored into every decision I make. Both the shop and my home where I do my dyeing are powered by 100% renewable energy and I use absolutely no single use plastics in my branded products. I am proud to announce that Sealy MacWheely has recently teamed up with Ecologi, meaning that for every purchase made both in the shop and online a tree will be planted in an effort to combat the climate emergency that our planet currently faces. Although the Covid 19 pandemic has been a bumpy ride the shop has recently moved to a new premises with an in-situ dye studio and I have absolutely no intention of giving up! In fact I have so many exciting adventures lined up for the next year that I can't wait to share with you so keep your eyes peeled!

Learn about civic life in Linlithgow and celebrate the town's rich royal heritage. This gallery features our stunning Mary, Queen of Scots statue, which was the first life-size statue of her to be commissioned in Scotland. Discover our trades and industries including dyeing, explosives, pharmaceuticals and electronics. Kids (and adults) will love the hands on interactives which include make your own medicine, design your own banner, and even a smelling interactive. In this gallery visitors can learn about the Linlithgow Marches, sports and leisure, politics, education and so much more. Key objects include Tam Dalyell's typewriter, our Waldie digital interactive and the hugely impressive Scotch Brigade banners. Our flexible space for activities, talks and film screenings. Check out what’s on. The space is available for use by local groups and currently featuring a display of historic costumed dolls, and an exhibition celebrating 200 years of the Union Canal. Our dedicated team of volunteers have played a critical role in delivering an ambitious activity plan. Since moving to Tam Dalyell House, volunteers have contributed over 4,000 hours of their time. They have researched, documented, conserved and photographed the collection, conducted oral history interviews, taken part in archaeology digs, planned school sessions and developed activities for young people. We've run an animation project with St Josephs and Low Port Primary Schools. Bridgend Primary co-curated our first community exhibition. Springfield, Linlithgow and Linlithgow Bridge Primary Schools have delivered drama and song writing performances in the museum. We’ve delivered reminiscence, oral history programmes, community film showings and much, much more. We have worked with our consortium partners over the last 6 years to carve out a role in East Lancashire, the wider county of Lancashire as well as nationally and internationally, as a cultural development agency that was previously lacking. We have increasingly developed our programming to address the needs of the communities with whom we work, to become a key strategic partner that works with organisations, artists, residents and local authorities to spotlight and enhance the cultural reputation of East Lancashire. Our two key long-term projects – the Pennine Lancashire Linear Park and the British Textile Biennial – are two of only a small number of core projects detailed in Lancashire County Council’s recently published Cultural Investment Strategy. These two core programme platforms bring together and elevate our embedded, long-term projects across our communities, providing national visibility, informing cultural strategy, and demonstrating that cultural productivity and active citizenship is flourishing across East Lancashire.
