Since 2018, we've welcomed participants from the UK, Europe, and as far as Australia to our workshops. WORKSHOP DETAILS * Location: Abi Higgins' beautiful rural studio and grounds in Christow, Devon, South West UK. Easily accessible from Exeter, which has both an airport and a train station. * Accommodations: A range of local B&Bs and other accommodations are nearby for your convenience. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Our two-day workshops are perfect for ceramicists of all levels: * Those with limited or no previous knowledge of alternative firing techniques. * Experienced ceramicists looking to expand their skills with new techniques. WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS * Types of Clay and Making Techniques: Learn about the different clay bodies suitable for alternative firings and various making techniques. * Raku Glaze Application and Firing: Explore the process of raku glazing and firing. * Burnishing and Naked Raku: Get introduced to burnishing techniques and the two-step naked raku process. * Horsehair/Feather Firing: Experiment with adding unique effects using horsehair and feathers. * Saggar and Barrel Kilns: Make and fire a 'mummy' saggar, prepare pots with plant decorations for saggar firing, and load and fire a barrel kiln. MATERIALS AND PREPARATION * Bisqued Pieces: Participants should bring suitable bisqued pieces, either sculptural or vessel forms. Prepared pots are also available for sale at £10 each. * Detailed Information: Information on types of clay to use and bisque temperatures will be provided with booking confirmation. Glass blowing courses: Learn to blow glass at Clavering Glassworks, Essex 1 DAY BEGINNER COURSE This one day lesson lasts for six hours and aims to provide an intensive introduction to this most exciting and challenging of craft disciplines. Throughout the lesson, you will learn to gather molten glass from the furnace at a temperature exceeding 1100 degrees and manipulate it with a range of traditional glassmaking tools. You will be taught to apply colour and pattern to the clear glass so that by the end of the lesson, you will have produced a number of items from vessels to paper weights of your own design to take home and treasure. KEY INFORMATION: This glassblowing lesson is aimed at complete beginners, so no previous experience is necessary. Small class sizes - maximum of three students to one instructor so you will get plenty of one-on one instruction. All safety equipment and materials are provided. Please wear sensible, comfortable clothes, preferably layers, so you can remove the outer layer if you get hot; and flat, sturdy shoes. Long hair should be tied back. Complimentary hot and cold drinks will be provided but feel free to bring along drinks, snacks and a packed lunch. Lunch is available at the Lodge nearby. Students for glassblowing courses must be over 18 years of age. Please note that glass vessels and other pieces made during the lesson need to cool slowly in the kiln, so these can be picked up two days later, or alternatively these can be posted for a charge.

In 2000 after graduating with a 1st class degree in glass from Edinburgh College of Art Wendy moved into her first glass studio, a small red brick outbuilding in her home in Dorset. Wendy then received the prestigious Crafts Council Start Up Award to purchase equipment to start Red Brick Glass (the glass kiln is still going strong 20 years on!) Wendy worked as an architectural glass artist, collaborating with interior designers and architects to create large-scale glass installations and made small glass work to sell in galleries and shops. After a few years Wendy launched her website (with a new-fangled online shop) and started to run fused glass making workshops. 4 years ago Wendy moved into her new home and studio, a gorgeous barn conversion in the beautiful village of West Lulworth, Dorset. This was a dream come true as Wendy always wanted to live within walking distance from the sea. She still doesn’t take it for granted and walks to get her dose of sea air most days. Red Brick Glass continues to grow and develop. Wendy designed the make at home kits during lockdown 2020 as she couldn’t run workshops and due to their success she now needs a little help in the studio to keep up with orders. Vicki is the brilliant new studio assistant and Wendy’s teenage daughters help out at weekends and holidays (filling up colourful glass pots is the favourite job). We are very grateful to Red Brick Glass customers who have supported us over the years. We are excited for the future and hope you will follow us on our journey.
