Join us for the day and learn the Art of Log Cabin Quilting. Log cabin quilting is a traditional form of quilting that has been around for centuries. Really popular during the American Civil War the quilt is made up of strips of material, one half light, the other half dark focused around a central square (representing the heart of the home). This workshop will teach you the principles of Log Cabin Quilting, enabling you to design your own piece, whether it’s a cushion for your Christmas theme or placemats / runner for your Christmas Dinner table, you’re sure to leave with beautifully hand-crafted item for everyone to enjoy.

In this class we will talk about different kinds of wadding and will learn about the quilting together of all the layers with either straight lines or freemotion stitching. Then we will learn to bind our mini quilts (bring the mini quilt tops we created in earlier classes, or bring your own) Wadding and thread all included in the price, as well as a copy of my In Stitches sewing handbook. You will also receive a free walking and free motion foot for your machine! Just let me know when you book what machine you have (this offer does not apply to Bernina feet I'm afraid!)

Create a memory quilt from cherished clothing items with Janine from Fat Quarter Quilting

Learn to applique, learn what tools and tricks you need to really make this work for you. Also get to grips with the really free and artistic free motion machine embroidery technique. Set your machine free to draw with it, combined with applique you can make stunning art! This is a very practical and hands on class which will see you appliqueing & free motion stitching in no time, the techniques are easily mastered so you can spend your time creating. Part of a 4 day quilting course, but suitable as a stand alone course too.

Would you love to learn how to make beautiful quilts and home decor but weren't sure where to start? Can you sew a straight stitch on a sewing machine? If the answer is 'yes' to any of the above, then this beginner workshop is for you! In this beginner-friendly sewing workshop, you'll learn from a how to use the sewing machine to create your own Patchwork Quilted Cushion You will sew 5-inch squares together to form a pieced cushion front in a layout of your choosing. You will learn how to piece (baste) the 3 layers together, patchwork top, wadding layer and backing, then quilt all three layers together to make your cushion front. You will finish by making an envelope-style back to complete your cushion Don't worry if you've never tried quilting or patchwork before, as you'll have all the help and support you need , along with plenty of tea, coffee and cake to keep you going. You'll leave the class with your gorgeous cushion cover, along with all the skills you've learned during this fun and friendly sewing workshop. All materials and equipment will be provided and you will go home with a finished 42x42cm patchwork and quilted cushion. A 42x42cm cushion insert will be needed for your finished cover. You can bring this with you to the class if you wish.  Plenty of tea and coffee will be served throughout the workshop along with freshly baked cake. We won't have a formal lunch break but please feel free to bring a packed lunch which you can keep in our fridge

Come and join Janine at Stitching Kitchen for a one day quilt top course learning how to make a disappearing nine patch quilt. This workshop will take place over one full day. It is suitable for total novices, taking you through everything you need to know to build confidence in quilt-making. If you are a more experienced quilter, you will enjoy learning a new technique that has so many creative possiblities, and you can benefit from Janine’s years of experience to pick up tips and tricks for a professional, polished quilt. Your tutor Janine also holds monthly long-arm clinics at Stitching Kitchen that you'd be welcome to drop into if you'd like any further pointers, or would like to outsource the quilt finishing to her! What you will learn/achieve 1. Understanding the Nine Patch Block Structure You will learn how to create a traditional 3x3 Nine Patch quilt block, focusing on color placement and fabric contrast to maximize visual interest after the transformation. 2. Cutting and Rearranging Techniques You will then practice the “disappearing” technique: cutting the finished Nine Patch into quarters and rearranging the sections to create a new, more complex-looking block. 3. Design Variations and Layout Possibilities Janine will encourage you to explore different layout options using the same block pieces, discovering how rotating and rearranging the quarter blocks can produce unique quilt top designs. 4. Precision Sewing and Pressing for Accurate Blocks The workshop will emphasise best practices for accurate piecing and pressing, which are crucial for achieving clean lines and proper alignment after cutting and reassembling the blocks. What's included Tuition: full instruction and support in a small class. Written instructions that you can take away and refer back to at home. Use of all the tools you will need during the workshop. Use of the Pfaff and Janome sewing machines in Stitching Kitchen's fully equipped studio.  Tea and cake. What to bring Fabrics to make your disappearing nine patch blocks. We will send you a materials list, but just give us a call or drop in to the studio if you would like further advice, and we can also make suggestions about where to purchase quilting fabric. Stitching Kitchen has thread available to purchase. You won’t need to bring anything else and you can leave your sewing machine at home. Stitching Kitchen is fully equipped with Pfaff and Janome sewing machines and all the quilting tools and sewing kit for use during the workshop. We will stop for 30 minutes for lunch, do bring a packed lunch along. Stitching Kitchen also stocks a full range of haberdashery, batting and quilting tools if you discover anything you would like to purchase to use at home.
