Beginner Patchwork and Quilted Cushion Workshop

Would you love to learn how to make beautiful quilts and home decor but weren't sure where to start? Can you sew a straight stitch on a sewing machine? If the answer is 'yes' to any of the above, then this beginner workshop is for you! In this beginner-friendly sewing workshop, you'll learn from a how to use the sewing machine to create your own Patchwork Quilted Cushion You will sew 5-inch squares together to form a pieced cushion front in a layout of your choosing. You will learn how to piece (baste) the 3 layers together, patchwork top, wadding layer and backing, then quilt all three layers together to make your cushion front. You will finish by making an envelope-style back to complete your cushion Don't worry if you've never tried quilting or patchwork before, as you'll have all the help and support you need , along with plenty of tea, coffee and cake to keep you going. You'll leave the class with your gorgeous cushion cover, along with all the skills you've learned during this fun and friendly sewing workshop. All materials and equipment will be provided and you will go home with a finished 42x42cm patchwork and quilted cushion. A 42x42cm cushion insert will be needed for your finished cover. You can bring this with you to the class if you wish.  Plenty of tea and coffee will be served throughout the workshop along with freshly baked cake. We won't have a formal lunch break but please feel free to bring a packed lunch which you can keep in our fridge

My name is Jane and I've been sewing and crafting from a young age.  My mum shared her love of being creative  and it hasn’t ever left me.  I now have the confidence to start any sewing project, going from an idea in my mind, to working out a pattern, to threading my sewing machine and finishing a project.  My mission is to help people find joy in sewing, particularly patchwork and quilting. I want to make sure everyone can sew with confidence, whether they are a complete beginner or have been sewing for years.  I do this by sharing the knowledge and skills I wished I'd known when I first started. I've been delivering classes online for a number of years and it's a real delight to be able to invite people to sew with me in the studio

I'm inspired by the natural and the man(chester) made, and passionate about encouraging others to explore and express their creativity. I LOVE running workshops and sharing the joy of stitching and creating with others. I want people to leave a Hoop & Fred workshop feeling better than when they walked in and empowered to create. Maybe they’ll fall head over heels with embroidery as I did, or perhaps they will simply feel better for having spent a couple of hours trying their hand at something arty and leave feeling confident enough to try other new things.  All my workshops are suitable for beginners. I  ensure everyone gets the time they need to ask questions, and they leave with all the materials and knowledge required to finish their project at home.

Given that I like to dig deep and explore my clients’ motivations and aspirations, I figure it is only fair to share a little background about who I am and why I am known as the person who can ‘Unscramble your Numbers’. I consider myself lucky to have grown up in two places: Australia and Canada. While Australia is my home base, I consider Canada my second home, and I try to get back there regularly. There is something about travelling that frees my spirit and opens my mind to new ideas. In my downtime, I’m a voracious reader. Good fiction, business books and Canadian history are my “go-to” genres. I love to cross stitch (you’d think I have enough of counting in my “day job”); I find the repetition soothing, and creating something with my own hands is highly rewarding.

From an early age I would always be knitting, crocheting, making cross stitch and borrowing my Mum’s old Singer sewing machine to make dolls clothes. At the age of 12 I remember my Nan buying my sister and I a knitting machine and we would spend many hours knitting up master pieces! Although on leaving school I did not realise my true vocation in life, it now seems natural that I have ended up working in the craft industry. In 2007 I embarked on an Art & Design course, followed by a Ceramics Degree. Since then I have been working as a Ceramicist & Teacher, selling my work in Galleries and exhibiting at Sculpture Exhibitions; Teaching and running workshops. For 8 years I was running a busy community studio in North Devon. I have recently moved my studio back home so I can concentrate on my own work; as well as small group lessons and workshops.
