Sometimes, the simplest photos are the hardest ones to take. How do you make an impeccable portrait of a loved-one or of a friend on the spot, and with only the help of natural lighting? Basically, how do you manage without a studio and all its controllability, and end up satisfied with an expressive and successful portrait?It is essential to take the environment into consideration when composing a portrait. Managing the background's colours and graphics, choosing the point of view, directing the model - these are all points that will be covered during the course.Light control is an equally important aspect; in particular, analysing a given moment's light and using it wisely are elements that will be explained to help you make a successful portrait.This workshop will teach you:- How to observe the environment so as to guide your aesthetic choices: point of view, directing a model- How to "read" light and place your subject accordingly- How to correctly define parameters in your camera according to your desired result- How to frame and compose an image to highlight the subjectThe workshop includes a theoretical explanation, a main "practical" part, as well as a class debriefing at the end. This half day or whole day course is designed around a project planning workbook that will provide participants with questions and practical advice to ensure that a project is well thought-out and practical, with clear aims and objectives. It will also help to ensure that if you are applying for project funding that you have answers to all the likely questions you will be asked. The half day course will cover the basics and ensure that the most important areas of project planning are addressed. The course could be extended to a whole day, covering all the areas and offering time for participants to complete the majority of the work book. The course would be suitable for anyone who is planning a project or who needs to re-focus a project that is not working effectively.

This course is suited to those who are involved in the planning, provision, and assistance of meals for those in care. It provides a solid insight into the basics of good nutrition as well as providing practical guidance for how to put these into practice within a care setting. Learners will also look briefly at Food Hygiene. This subject forms standard 8 in The Care Certificate.

I've added this two day workshop because a one day workshop gives you the basics, but two days will allow you to develop your carving technique and use additional knife grasps.  By embedding good technique into the way you carve, you will avoid injuries and additional regular stretching will help you to look after your body. You will leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home.  You will have access to a range of different tools, starting with the axe to rough out spoon blanks - I have a good range of axes you can try from budget to the Gransfors large carving axe. Next using the Mora wood carving knives (105/106/120) to shape your blanks into spoons following traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. I also have a range of hook knives to try out. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood (usually willow/birch/alder or cherry) - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log, trimming it down with an axe, to carving finer details and decorations with chip carving knives. This course is located close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.  Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden. REFERENCE CODE 600/6511/4 COURSE LEVEL NVQ Level 2 THIS COURSE IS AVAILABLE IN Course Overview This qualification is aimed at those who are involved in plastering activities in the workplace. It is not expected that candidates working in this industry all do the same activities so the qualification has been developed to allow opportunities for those carrying out work in any one of the following broad categories: solid basic plastering, solid full plastering, basic fibrous plastering and full fibrous plastering. Those taking the qualification must also prove knowledge and competence in working at heights, calculating quantities and wastage and the use of powered and hand tools and equipment. All work completed must be done in accordance with building regulations and industry recognised safe working practices, including the disposal of waste. The qualification is structured to ensure that there is a high degree of flexibility within the units available and will allow employees from companies of all sizes and specialisms equal opportunity to complete. To provide this opportunity in addition to the core skills above, candidates will also be able to select optional units recognising skills including, working with direct bond dry linings, laying sand and cement screeds, installing mechanically fixed plasterboard and carrying out repair work. The standards cover the most important aspects of the job. This qualification is at Level 2, although some units may be at different levels and should be taken by those who are fully trained to deal with routine assignments. Candidates should require minimum supervision in undertaking the job
