Electric Kilns and Firing - an online course by Tim Thornton. The course covers firing and maintaining your kiln, and the effect firing has on clays and glazes

In this fun and focused session you will learn how to throw pots with a wheel each and have the opportunity to paint what you make for firing. Carole will demonstrate the process and teach you the technique. The session is suitable for all including children age 7+, couples, friends, families, and small groups.

One day silver clay workshop in Market Bosworth you will make 3 to 5 solid silver jewellery pieces taught by a fully qualified metal clay artist. Come and have fun learning the magic of Silver Metal Clay. Silver clay is a recycled product which when fired becomes solid silver and is Hallmark quality. The best thing is it requires few tools so makes a great new hobby. A workshop for beginners or experienced jewellers, you will learn how to: Roll and pattern clay Cut shapes and create moulds Sand , drill and prepare your piece for firing Fire and polish add patinas and add findings so your solid silver jewellery is ready to wear.

In this class Peter will teach you how to make a catch with a hinged locking mechanism.This project is easier than it first looks, but you do need to have experience piercing out shapes and drilling. During the one-day workshop Peter will show you some other options and explain how they work. You will also be provided with information handouts and materials. These specialist skills can be applied across other aspects of jewellery making. You NEVER stop learning as far as the jewellery industry is concerned and it is Peter’s passion to maintain traditional skill. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Students should have some workshop experience and be confident using normal jewellery tools and equipment. WHAT TO BRING: For safety reasons, during each class, you are required to wear appropriate footwear, we request that no open toed shoes are worn within Workshop 925. Long hair should also be tied back when working with the equipment. You may also wish to bring a notebook. We have handouts for many demonstrations, but there are always many tips and tricks given verbally by the tutor, which some might like to keep note of. Please bring any lunch, snacks and drinks which you may want to your session. We have tea and coffee for you to help yourselves to. We supply all materials and tools. I've added this two day workshop because a one day workshop gives you the basics, but two days will allow you to develop your carving technique and use additional knife grasps.  By embedding good technique into the way you carve, you will avoid injuries and additional regular stretching will help you to look after your body. You will leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home.  You will have access to a range of different tools, starting with the axe to rough out spoon blanks - I have a good range of axes you can try from budget to the Gransfors large carving axe. Next using the Mora wood carving knives (105/106/120) to shape your blanks into spoons following traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. I also have a range of hook knives to try out. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood (usually willow/birch/alder or cherry) - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log, trimming it down with an axe, to carving finer details and decorations with chip carving knives. This course is located close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.  Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden.
