We're offering a beginners' workshop where you'll learn a variety of knots and styles, and then you can choose from a range of macramé products to make. The workshop will be held at our studio in the beautiful Shropshire Hills. When you leave the workshop, you'll have beautiful macramé products that you'll be proud of—and more importantly, you'll be able to turn your new skills into a new hobby at home.

Get to know your sewing machine and make projects to practise basic sewing skills including French seams, top stitching, zips and buttonholes

Start this class as a beginner and leave as a glass making addict. In this full-day workshop, you will learn each step of the glass blowing process from experienced and encouraging glassmaking experts in their inspiring studio!  With all of the materials, supplies and equipment needed to make your own glass provided in this workshop, learning to blow glass couldn’t be easier.  You will be part of a small group of 4-6 people with up to two tutors. Although you’re building your technical skills, there’s still room in this workshop for creativity- after all you're learning from top glass blowing artists! With all the colours you could dream of, get experimental and let your imagination take the reins to style your glass. In the beginning of this workshop, you will learn how to prepare different colour and texture techniques to apply to your glass pieces.  You will be able to make a bowl or paperweight and choose a final form from the following list of functional objects: - Drinking glass - Vase - Decorative bauble Master how to safely and confidently heat molten glass in a 1100 degree furnace which you will then gather and remove from the furnace using historical hand forged tools. Make sure you’re full of hot air for the next step! Once you have perfected removing your glass from the furnace, it’s time to learn how to sculpt and blow your own glass.  After a hard and hot graft it’s time to chill out! Cooling your glass is equally as fascinating and important as heating your glass, at the end of the workshop you will learn how to safely and properly cool your glass like a professional.  Many students learn best through a combination of demonstrations as well as a hands-on interactive teaching approach. This workshop is no exception! You will watch a demonstration then safely learn more about each step in the glass blowing process through having a go yourself. Not only will you get to take your three perfect and personalised glass pieces home at the end of the workshop, you will also be leaving with a full understanding of the glass making process and techniques as well as a burning hunger to create more gorgeous glass. What's included in the price? Although lunch in our full day course is included in the workshop, you’re welcome to bring along any food and drink with you or visit the on site cafe. A fun creative workshop full of colour for any level and perfect gift! Just bring your keepsake along and discover how you will use Barbola to create your piece of art?  Barbola which was a popular technique found in the 1930's. You may have seen these beautiful vintage pieces? This technique was often found on mirrors, trinket boxes, fire screens and cigarette holders. It was originally made from gesso in the shape of flowers, fruit and leaves. On the day you will learn how to make your own flowers and leaves using moulds and how to make your piece have the charm of the 1930's! We will need any dietary requirements as a luxury cream tea lunch with a pot of tea or fizz will be served.. whatever you prefer! This one day event includes small items for you to work on and materials to create and paint your Barbola like acrylic paints. You can also choose from the whole range of paint from Sophie James Decor. Paint A Piece" (Furniture Painting Workshop)  Join us at Space 2 Make and unleash your creativity in our Furniture Painting workshop. Our taster session offers you the opportunity to bring your own small piece of furniture to our studio and learn how to revamp it with the help of our experts. We provide all the materials and tools you'll need, including a choice of colours (250ml tin) of Frenchic Paint™ to transform your tired furniture into something gorgeous. No previous experience is required.  This is the perfect chance for you to discover a new hobby or improve your furniture painting skills. You'll take away inspiration, practical knowledge, and a beautifully transformed piece of your furniture! This course is ideal for all, from beginners to confident makers with only a few hours to spare. You will learn the basics of leather craft for accessories and be introduced to techniques including machine stitching on leather, hand finishing and hand cutting. You will be working with a hard sturdy veg tanned leather. This is a perfect introductory course to start your journey into Leatherwork and bag making as you will experience the wide variety of tasks involved in the work. In order to complete your belt in a day we will use part pre-prepared components and the purse will be made from a 'Hands of Tym' pattern but do not fear there is still plenty of work for you to do. During the day you will be directed by your tutor Leathersmith and London College of Fashion Lecturer Georgie Tym to make a 'raw edge' Belt sized to fit you exactly with opportunity for personalisation. There will be one buckle as closure and the opportunity to choose leather colours to enable a bespoke piece. The dimensions of the belt are either W38mm or W25mm - length will depend on you! It will be the same design and construction as the belt in the photos featured. The course will be run from the HOME STUDIO of Hands Of Tym in Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX16 9DH Maximum class size is 4 What's included in the price? There are NO ADDITIONAL costs. All leather, hardware and other materials will be included. There will be a selection of leather and hardware colours for you to choose from.The course runs from 2.30pm – 5pm or 10am - 12.30 on a morning session. The MATERIAL SENSITIVITY workshop provides the opportunity to make experimental art that focuses on the qualities and art-making possibilities of different materials.

Stone Carving made a return to the Phoenix last year when we welcomed Mark Stonestreet to come teach us the joys of creating free-standing abstract sculpture. It was an absolutely fantastic course! This year Mark is coming back for more and this time we’re giving the students more stone to create with and more time – 5 days to be precise! The dusty nature of stone means that we will be working under a marquee set within the studio’s beautiful meadow – what better way to spend your summer – especially when none of us can go abroad? Outside of a global pandemic, Mark spends half the year creating sculpture in the South Downs and the other half in Mamallapuram in India – a village of over 200 stone carving workshops. His life is in stone and I liked him the instant we met. He is everything you would expect a stone carver to be – sturdy, weathered (meant in the nicest possible way, I promise Mark!) with a warm, no-nonsense personality that immediately puts you at ease. Our students are in safe hands working with him and I cannot wait to see what they will achieve this year! 23/08/2021 - 27/08/2021 10:00 am - 4:30 pm Location: The Phoenix Studio This fun course includes: Informal, relaxed & attentive guidance for every student, provided by Mark Stonestreet Step-by-step demonstrations covering… How to work with the tools and stone safely, How to create an abstract design that will look good and have structural integrity, How to transfer your design to the stone and carve into it efficiently to create the basic shape, How to add detail and refine the carved form, How to finish and present the form (looking at finishes, treatment, and mounting). This course is for you if: You want to realise drawings and 2D designs into 3D or have an introduction to visualizing your ideas in 3D You want to explore your creativity but lack the confidence to do so on your own You want to learn how to work safely and competently in stone You want to get away from it all and immerse yourself in a fun, creative environment Suitable for? Anyone, but please note that you will be using a chisel and mallet throughout the three days and this will take it’s toll on your arms and body. We generally limit the age to 16 years old+ though exceptions can be made where appropriate. Please contact James Orts and ask. What is included in the price? Five full days tuition (10 am-4.30 pm) Materials, including a piece of Portland stone (approximately 55cm x 25cm x 22cm), safety gear, and the tools you will need for when on the course You could consider making a simple printed course handout outlining the technique’s main principles and useful links/suppliers – Totally your choice though! Tea, coffee, biscuits/cakes Use of a beautiful, purpose-built art studio with all the equipment & materials you will need Beautiful countryside setting Pre-course prep It would be useful to gather, sketch out or think about what abstract shapes you are drawn to. Mark will be able to provide ideas as well and advise you on which of your ideas may work best so having some ideas to work from would be useful. You will be working outdoors so come prepared for the forecasted weather and all students must work in sturdy shoes. You will be sent an automated email on booking which prompts you towards documents that help you prepare for your time here. If this does not happen then please email James before the course.   Beyond The Course Having completed a Phoenix Studio course many of our students choose to explore the medium further. They may come on another weekend course, start coming to our Phoenix Art Club Sessions or our Creative Monday Sessions, or carry on independently at home.
